October 25th is Karate Day in Okinawa, Japan, the birthplace of the martial art. The 100 Kata for Karate Day was created by James Pankiewicz of the Asato Dojo in Naha City, Okinawa. It is now a global challenge, with individuals and dojos around the world undertaking 100 kata.
For 2021, Okinawa's 100 Kata for Karate Day took place at the Peace Memorial Park in Itoman, Okinawa. The park is a memorial for those who died during the horrific Battle of Okinawa during WWII. Approximately 20,000 American soldiers, 77,000 Japanese soldiers, 30,000 Okinawan conscripts, and 150,000 Okinawan civilians were killed.
The Peace Memorial Park has an eternal flame, and on the day of the event the children of the Asato Dojo gave a chain of 1000 origami cranes, a traditional symbol of peace.
