Survival Lilly This was a really good video on budget gear. I would like to suggest something in this category you might want to add to your store: I recently ordered and received (in two days) an “army green” 3 meter by 3 meter (118 by118 inches or about 10 feet by 10 feet) “ultralight” waterproof tarp I found on amazon for $25 (about €15 ?). It’s fairly light at 0.76 kilos (1 pound 6 ounces) and comes with tent spikes and cordage. It has tie outs on the corners as well midway along each side. I’ve tested it on a rainy day and it is rainproof in all configurations I’ve tried so far. I would’ve ordered this tarp from your store if it had been there and I believe other people might as well. Then we can use the poncho you mentioned as it was intended, as a mobile rain cover like a jacket. Keep up the good work Lilly.

So far most of my camping stuff has come from the wally world. What you get for the price is pretty decent, but everything is bulky and not efficiently packable in my opinion. The sleeping bags are giant (though on clearance right now so I picked up a 40*F one for 9 BUCKS!) and they really only carry one pack that is good for long trips. I also can't find a single walled canteen, they only carry vacuum sealed double walled containers.

You always produce quality, instructive videos. We are from USA Pacific Northwest (not too far south of Vancouver Island, which you had a backcountry experience. [Clearcuts in the background are wild land but not wilderness.]). On this video you seemed to by tired. Your mastery of English from your mother language is impressive. Almost always you are right on. There were a couple of terms and emphasis on different syllables that were unusual. Earlier, You seemed concerned about people saying 'you were not real. Or, you should be in the kitchen.' You are wonderful, skilled and experienced. Ignore unreasonable men! I learned a long time ago,You Cannot Reason with UNreasonable people! Great video! As for some of the folks who demand specific costs, just about every item you stated you can get them from various places (amazon, dad's garage, etc)indicating there are many places to get them from for cheaper than overly expensive ultra-light gear shops. Well played Lilly. Several examples would not be bought at the same time. But great to be mentioned for a cheaper camp and/or bug out kit. That said, you covered the basics needed very well, quickly, no-nonsense, and thought out!

I have been camping with a shower curtain, some cordage, a knife, an inflatable swimming pool mattress float, a dime store rain suit, a long well insulated coat, hat and gloves, extra socks, a flash light, at lest two cheap lighters, a pot, a cup, a rag. a towel, a bar of soap, a knife-fork-spoon set, two or three large garbage bags, water and food of choice. That's all you need. Most of this everyone has on hand. What they don't probably costs under $25. Even less than that if they get some of it at a good will store. A swimming pool float is more comfortable than those mats and cost about a dollar. However, it is probably smart to take a spare since they are none too sturdy. That's OK because if one goes flat it is a good waterproof place to sit or put gear. It has lots of uses. You can get cordage at the dollar store which if doubled up will be good enough for most camping needs and it only costs a dollar. You can bring stakes or make them. This kit isn't meant to make long term shelters. It is for beginners who don't want to spend a lot of money. Just stake down the shower curtain but prop up the front with one stick. Blow up the mattress and slip it inside. Form a front closure with the garbage bags and there you go. a tent to keep the rain and dew off you in minutes. I have done this many times with friends. Honestly, I think poor people have more fun with much less.

It can be garnished with things a lot of enthousiasts already have handy. Excellent job at keeping it no-nonsense!

👍 from Texas ! Most of the time around here our problem is the heat . Having minimal gear that is old used or just cheap is usually no problem . People who gear shame aren't the ones who have to carry your pack as long as it works for you and it's all that you need who cares . It's funny to me sometimes when I see somebody with $3000 worth of gear in there pack when like you say it can be done for 100 bucks . Ha ha

I still use a lot of the stuff I got then even though I can now afford better stuff.

Lil, I can blame :) or credit you for getting the wife into camping and survival and fishing modes of interest and enthusiasm. When our little Prius gave up the ghost at about half a million miles she insisted on getting a Toyota 8 passenger van to satisfy her desire to be able to pack for camping/survival/shft/emergency bug out with all she conceivably needs including firearms/ammunition/clothes and survival gear. Over the last two years we have managed to accumulate just about everything we need or can think of for any and all scenarios but I still watch your and a lot other channels on you tube for additional information, ideas, and tips Thanks and keep up your endeavors. For a starter i would recommend to get the pruning saw from the shed. Take a surplus canteen set with cup, a surplus sleeping bag and either a Zeltbahn or poncho, a mat is only needed in an urban setting. Leave the mat just use leaves or pine needles. Don't use paracord but tent line (3 mm and up) to start a lot cheaper and a good way to learn how to use cordage, especially when you have jute and fishing line also no need to take apart expensive cordage. For signaling a make up mirror and aloud whistle, the Coghlans whistle has a built in compass that is reliable and cheap. And for cooking bring a spoon from home, matches and a lighter every kitchen has.

Greate video! A lot of videos elsewhere are "gear head" oriented. Good stuff, but you want to go minimal to lessen weight and concentrate on keeping warm & dry. A suggestion: a painters drop cloth is inexpensive and light. It is very versatile and can be used for an emergency tent, a ground cloth, a tarp, etc. In fact 2 drop clothes fit easily in your pack without taking up much space or weight. Spend your money on a good knife (not an overly expensive one), a good metal water bottle/cup, sleeping bag, & warm clothing and rain gear. Just a thought. Thanks.

My cheap tips; * a handy pack of wet wipes. * Small bottle of hand sanitizer (also can be used to light fires). * A Bic lighter. * Simple hand flashlight. * Nail clippers and tweezers. * Some lip balm. All of this together could be less than $10. But they add a lot of usefulness in the bush.
@ghanaboyz
6 жыл бұрын
I like how you had tweezers in your list. It may be included in some first aid kits, but I think many of the smallest one may not include it. When using ones hands as a tool, a tweezer may save the day, gloves or not. Many missunderstand why I bring a mirror. Signaling, yeah, fine, but a more practical usage is to be able to handle wounds and such issues in the face. Like getting something in the eye. Most people are used to having a mirror at home and forget about it's importance if you get hurt in the face. A bic lighter has a big potential for a very small weight and space, but I would never depend on it.

What a great tupperware rechargeable light, I love it and I'm need to build one from scavenged parts. An iso mat is nice but IMO it's a luxury. It's big, bulky, and while attached to my pack, would catch on sticks. Then again I'm also quite cold resistant and we didn't have the nice air fill ones in the military. So instead of the sleeping mat, in my kit, I'd trade the sleeping mat for a $20 mini water filter.

Had lots of 550 paracord, but after looking at the benefits of a quality #36 tarred bank line (like CMI brand) it made a lot more sense to me to carry it instead. Its easier to work with, lighter weight, water resistant that helps with rot etc, and can also be broken down into much smaller strands when needed. I can now carry several hundred feet for an equal weight on 100 feet of 550 cord. Must be quality line though...,basic masons twine etc isnt the same.

Affordability is one thing but I also don’t see the point of spending top dollar on gear that you can find alternatives for at much lower prices. A little time and effort in research is all it takes to find functioning gear at a reasonable cost. Also, making your own gear and modifying existing items to your needs is fun! Don’t fall into the trap of “needing” the best and latest gear.

Going poor means going cold better to have quality as you said Lilly, but its a good video you can get used stuff too that's just as good or better than the cheap stuff, you had some good things to say good points...thnx Lilly.

BPA isn't the only bad thing in plastic bottles. Phalates are pretty bad as well and there is never any mention of it. BPA free labels offer a false sense of security. I personally rather my water taste like metal than plastic.

You should do a video on the most expensive survival kit for the rich, for example a diamond encrusted canteen in which you can use the diamonds to cut glass.

Hey, i love your work and i have a suggestion for a new video. Ive been looking for an advice on how disabled preppers like myself could be better prepared for a a survival situation, whether its a natural disaster or a without a rule of law situation. I feel like this part of the community has gone almost completely unexplored. I myself was in a car accident about a decade ago and had to spend over 2 years in a wheelchair. I now walk pretty much normal and people dont realize im disabled, but i cant walk longer than few kilometers. Im planning to buy an ATV to help with moving longer distances in hard terrain. Anyway im sure other disabled preppers and people who have disabled family members would appreciate some tips. Love your work!

Bueno saludos

Why doesn't anyone ever recommend a butane disposable lighter in a survival kit? Or even a six pack of them. They are pretty good at starting fires, and yes you can have all the primitive methods as well but we're talking about actual survival, not as a hobby.

If you watch Joe Robinet's last video he had to warm up his lighter before it lit. So make sure it's warm. Butane in cold weather doesn't work so well. Lilly's kit is a good balance, but adding a lighter for damper conditions might be a good idea. Love your videos Lilly..always a good source of information. I like the comments too. Always a good source of things I haven't considered.

She made the video for beginners, you can get a lighter at a gas station, can you get paracorde there? What is obvious to you might not be obvious to others.

Leo, lights are not always a good option. Butane lights work great on warm weather, but not in cold weather. Naptha lighters (Zippo) work great but the fuel evaporates, so the lighter can go dry without ever using it. You do not want to depend on only one method for starting a fire, especially if You are already cold, stressed, injured, thirsty, or just plain not at your best.

Nice video, as always. I noticed you use the German word Rucksack. Interestingly, that is one of the German words I understood as a Boy Scout in the US. Most of the time we call it a backpack but sometimes someone would say Rucksack and we all understood that. Not as common as Kindergarten but many people, especially outdoor people will understand the word. Danke Sehr

Nice I like & I hope you are able to help a lot of people with this video Lilly. I just out of s***'s & giggles have tried to go with an inexpensive kit & the best I could do was around $200 to $250 (US) including the bag & food. Thanks again Lilly for all of the videos you share with us. ;-)

+Survival Lilly Nice review of some less expensive options. Affordable gear usually is heavier and bulkier, but it can last for some years of camping or backpacking use if taken care of properly. Cheers.
