I'd love to get some history behind what happened with the SNES Pit Fighter. It's clearly an unfinished game, maybe even Alpha. There's so much either mssing or altered from the controls to the power up system and missing enemies and weapons that this has to have been developed in a few months at most. Curiously, Race Drivin' seems to be by the exact same people (person?) as the title screen font and presentation is identical...Probably developed at the same time.

So fun fact about Jim Power, the reason the scrolling is like that is part of an optical illusion to give the game 3D depth. The original release came with special 3D glasses that allowed the effects to work without altering the screen and colors. The reason it’s so sickening is because the glasses are meant to lessen the intensity of the scrolling and make it pop out. That doesn’t change the fact that the game is impossibly ridiculously hard, easily one of the toughest games on the system, to the point of being near unplayable

Lion King could have been good. But it's overly hard for no reason. The ostrich in the second level is impossible to correctly judge how to do the double jump. The game only gets harder from there with pixel perfect jumps and overly hard enemies. Then the final level you have to fight scar 3 times, he takes a ton of damage and has a one hit kill attack. Then you have to do pixel perfect jumps over instant death pits, dodge fire, dodge lightning, fight 4 cheetahs, then at the end throw scar off a cliff. All with zero checkpoints.

They were cranking out so many SNES titles at the time. I remember bringing the SNES home and firing it up with Link to the Past and it was pretty clear how impactful it was in terms of stepping up visually and soundwise from the Sega Genesis(at least initially as Sega eventually stepped up their game as well) so I think we were all just mesmorized at anything released on the SNES because of how new and fresh it all felt. There was a pretty long wait with some delays between the NES and SNES so when it finally arrived, we were all stoked to play pretty much anything on it. tbh this was really a phenomenal list my friend. growing up in the era of the console wars, school was always divided up into either the genesis or the snes supporters, and i was always on the snes side. to me, there really wasn't even any comparison between the two as far as immersion, richness and complexity of visuals and colors, the sound capabilities, the storylines -- snes had it all. well anyway, this list was a great contrast to how i normally romanticize the console and definitely eye-opening as far as the slop that was strewn about snes' library of shining gems. oh btw -- i had to sub and can't wait for more!

I do have some childhood trauma from the Lion King game, but it wasn't the monkey puzzle. After some back and forth I solved it quickly enough to not build up any frustration. My problem was the waterfall in the Hakuna Matata level. You have to climb up by jumping on randomly spawning logs. They all fall at random speeds and some way too fast. There is no pattern, you just keep trying until you get lucky with the spawning. I used to have dreams about beating that section and always woke up before making it. Holding my hands like I was holding a controller. Hakuna Ma-fu**ing-tata! The rest of the game is pretty challenging, but nothing too frustrating. It only took a moment until I realized you have to throw Scar off the cliff with a move you almost never use to beat the final boss. It does have some cheap moments, intentionally even, since it was a Blockbuster exclusive in the US, and we in Germany and the rest of the world had to suffer because of it. But It's not a bad game.

I loved this. I was always a Sega kid growing up, having a Master System then a Megadrive/Genesis, a Saturn and a Dreamcast. I didn’t get a SNES until much later in life when adult things like bills and marriage were getting in the way. The upside is I have disposable income to spend on 16bit tat so this list will prove priceless. Thank you and you’ve earned a sub from me 👍
