Hi Chrisc - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I used to cut and split for a big operator and he seasoned and sold the logs. He provided the fuel and I used my saws and chains with my only machinery being a wheelbarrow and pallet truck! I was paid on output so honed my operation to the most efficient possible. Producing 150 cords a year I was able to average $28 per hour. Income tax would have been 25% but placing it all into a private pension made it tax free. This year I made the difficult decision it was time to retire so I'm now down to 8 cords a year just for my own stove. Keep on Splitting!

@@InTheWoodyard Big Rodders again. To give you some perspective, the statutory minimum wage here is approx $11 so I was able to push my average earnings up to 250% of the minimum wage. Now all that is left for me is to sit on the porch in my rocking chair, chew tobacco and think about the old days. The only problem is, I don't have a porch or rocking chair and I've never touched any form of tobacco in my life. But over here we have Guinness, the real stuff and not that which is exported so I'm off to the pub - Cheers.

You should consider talking to tree services and having them drop logs off. I get logs from my tree guy. 75% of the logs are just like the ones you get, just shorter. I do get huge chunks and ugly logs too but it's not that bad to deal with them. The last 2 days I got 2 cords of perfectly straight cherry logs that I could run though a Japa. It would be great if you could get logs like this for free.

Morning Chris! can you do a video about identifying different types of wood? I cut and hand split just for my own use, and usually get my wood from the local yard waste dump where people sometimes bring logs/rounds. I'm just splitting with an axe, so trying my best to avoid the real stringy, knotty stuff!
@jamesdavis3757
2 жыл бұрын
I second this notion.
@pyroman6000
2 жыл бұрын
Definitely avoid Spruce, Elm, Sweet Gum, and things like that. All are known for being a pita!!! I do exactly what you do- right down to the axe. Had to buy wood for the first time -ever- this year, when the owner of said dump site decided to do a spring cleaning, and bury it all... It's just for a small grill that doubles as my firepit, so I like my pieces small and short. Thus, the purchased wood often needs resplitting- which is fine, how else am I supposed to burn off excess steam, lol. Anywho, I said that to say this: I've had great luck handsplitting= Red Oak, Maple- esp Silver maple; locust; Birch, Beech; Ash, basswood; poplar/Aspen; Cherry; and Cottonwood limbs. Also, try to avoid stump pieces- as that's the toughest section of trunk. Crotches, too. Cottonwood grows quickly, and develops some huge, honkin trunk pieces that can be tough. If green, waiting a few months for it to start drying and cracking will help a lot. The limbs usually split fine. Not good for heat, but burns great in a firepit. Red oak splits like a dream! Usually with one good whack- unless there's a knot, or you found a tough piece. Very distinctive wood: light whitish colored sapwood, with a reddish brown heart. fine grained, and hard as rock. One of the easiest to identify, if looking at a split piece. It also has a sour, earthy smell when fresh split. Takes forever to fully season, though.
