I also went from 13 Pro to 15 Pro Max, and man, it's such a good phone. Loving everything about it. My only complaint would be that sometimes, depending on lighting, the 5x photos can have a lot of noise in them. I think it's just a software thing and they will hopefully tweak it in a software update. It's a brand new lens and sensor combination so probably just some fine tuning required.

@@krishanu905 yeah for everyday use the size of the max aint just comfortable. I'd expect the 5x NOT to be present even in next year's pro model, rather, its think they're gonna bump the mp count on the 3x to make it digitally (and viably) crop into a 5x like what they did with the 2x

1- Brilliant review. 2- Of course, because it’s Becca, a photographer’s photographer with amazing on-screen presence and a lovely sense of humour. 3- I never comment on ads. I hate ads. But the Jeep integration? Presented by? Retro and classt and not at all nauseating. Hats off to whoever sold that to Jeep (and to whoever at Jeep / its agency who had the courage to back such great editorial). More classy ads (that are clearly ads and not sleaze masquerading as editorial), please. After all, Verge has gotta pay the staff. And much, much more Becca, please.

About the "7 lenses" thing. In terms of framing they act like a native lens at that focal length would look like. The issue is that you're only using part of the sensor, so it acts as a smaller sensor with a slower lens. That means that the low light performance is worse and the depth of field is not as shallow. Also obviously it's lower resolution. So even if the 35mm crop produces the same resolution as the 1x option, it's of lower quality. There's not really a difference between shooting with a smaller sensor vs a larger sensor and cropping in.

If you shoot in ProRAW then open the file in RAW Power, you’ll get access to additional raw-only controls such as boost and black levels and raw sharpening. So if you turn a lot of these down, you’re basically removing the over-processed look that Apple bakes into their HEIF files. No other raw processor does this, not even Lightroom

Thank you for the info on the recording to an external drive and the choppy footage! Also, simple solution for the camera app for regular folks and experts: Apple could just put a little oval PRO button in a corner. The main camera app stays the same or is even dumbed down a little and if you hit that PRO button, the camera app turns on all features (including peak meters for sound, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, white balance, etc.). So then pros can tweak to their hearts desire and newbies can just shoot with the regular setup, not unlike how DSLRs have different modes and full manual.

Thank you so much, Becca, for mentioning and demonstrating the joy of capture on older iPhones. For myself - someone who grew up parallel with the iPhone, basically (I was 14 in 2008 and carried my 1st gen to Jr. High in a goddamned leather belt holster) - the excessive and exponentially-accelerating prioritization of image capture capability in the design of these devices has been bewildering, sad, and alienating since the 8 Plus. Someone gave me an absurdly pristine 4S example two years ago and - in relentless contrast to my 12 Pro Max and now 15 Pro - it has helped me find the joy, again, in feeling more able to just *capture* those worthy moments in life, with so much more delight. I don't know if losing it so deeply was my failure, ultimately, but gorsh... I try to evangelize it at every opportunity, these days. After this from *you*, though, I feel a lot more sane lol

*REBECCA forgot something.* She did not mention the fact that Apple’s stabilisation is much better than Samsung’s, what makes telephoto shots way more detailed in less than ideal lighting conditions. This Apple’s weaker optical zoom producers sharper images. Also, Apple makes portrait shots automatically and much faster, which Rebecca also forgot to mention as otherwise her Samsung bias narrative would crumble.

The iPhone is a mass market product. Even the so-called Pro. As such, the camera is still the equivalent of a point and shoot. I believe 99% of the iPhone Pro Users want to have "pro" pictures without having to think about the settings that a pro would have to do. That's the whole point of ever increasing AI-"support". Will real pro photographers really ever use an iPhone for their professional work? Probably not. So instead, Apple gives the people who don't want to do their homework the tool to still get pictures that come out nice without having to tinker too much. Consequently, adding all these options to the menus would be against their design principle of making things as easily accessible as possible without possibly causing any confusion. At least that's my take.
