I have just purchased the new AWD RAV4 Hybrid Cruiser (White). Although am currently in lockdown and working from home (and not going anywhere except to the shops and back) I am enjoying driving this vehicle. Although at times it can sound noisy when the foot is planted, it is most of the time quiet when driving sedately. I have taken the car on a couple of country trips including off road and surprised at how well it manages the uneven surfaces from sand to stones ard rock. The fuel economy is amazing compared to my previous diesel SUV attaining around 5.L/100km on the highway. I am getting around 900kms per tank full. There is a fair amount of technology which I felt somewhat daunted by when I first picked up the car, but after driving this car around my local area have found it to be easy to use. It is certainly a fair amount of money but oh so worth it!

Really good review. You’ve got a great, comprehensive format that never gets boring. I noticed your survey on hardness was pretty clear that people care about it. No other review channel provides an objective measure on this. An idea you could consider as you get more measurements on different models is to put up a little table which compares the car you’re reviewing with its competitors.

The interior could use a few items just to make it a little more special too, much like the Mazda CX-5. Bar that it’s a brilliant vehicle and light years ahead of the previous model. Great review 👍🏽

Plus, it has a small glove box, which can be hardly closed with vehicle manual and service books insode. Also, a lack of illuminated window switches, side mirror controller are annoying at night. Otherwise, I agree that it is a great vehicle (it is definitely light years ahead of the previous model, which was my least favourite) especially with the hybrid power train that is above my expectation. CarExpert - Sadly, it is my understanding that Toyota Australia have indicated that they won’t be bringing the PHEV version ( known as the “Prime”) into Australia for some inexplicable reason. It has just been released in the United States, and as you can imagine the demand for it is astronomical, however, Toyota are only making around 5,000 units available in the U.S. in 2020 !!! Absolutely crazy, given that they could easily sell 20-40 times that number due to its popularity. It’s an AWD vehicle, with a pure EV range of approx 60kms on a full charge and a 0-100 km/hr time of around 6 seconds !! I actually believe that it could be a partial competitor to the full EV Tesla Model Y SUV, for those people that want to go electric around town, but are concerned about the potential for range anxiety on a road trip - the true “ goldilocks” EV solution. I just can’t understand why Toyota, the worlds largest car manufacturer, can’t produce enough units, by a large margin, of a mainstream car that is in such high demand by consumers!!! Surely they have the manufacturing resources to build enough batteries and electric motors, given that they have been developing and producing hybrids now for over 20 years since the first Prius was introduced.

You should clarify, the models built in Japan can indeed get over 600 miles of range, but the manufacturing defect impacting the North-American built models will make them get 400 or fewer. Virtually all of the 2019 and 2020 RAV4 hybrids have the dreaded fuel tank issue, in which no more than 10 or so gallons go in, or in extreme cases (like mine) the tank only takes THREE gallons. And the advertised 40 mpg can be as low as 26 mpg, which is what I got in my first 5k of driving. Toyota calls even extreme cases like mine “normal operating characteristics” so refuses to fix them. Thus, North American buyers may get a vehicle with less than a 100 mile range, which makes it not a useful vehicle as the review states. So buyer beware, especially since Toyota is fraudulently (depending on the state you’re in) failing to disclose these substantial ways in which the vehicle fails to conform to specifications.

On my first tank, I only got 370 miles until "empty", and could only fill to 11 gallons, we'll see what happens in the years ahead. My dealership has given me the clear to drive 2-gallons past the fuel light. Your story sounds horrific though, shame on Toyota - this is apparently a 2 year old issue now. Honestly all these KZitem puff pieces are what lured me into thinking this was a great vehicle, now I'm starting to read that there are widespread issues with the vehicles electrical AND fuel systems. (at least the US-made version), which sucks because I was one day away from getting a Japan model....

@@adammartin1643 Shame indeed. Nationalsaid they could address it once I go through the “impartial” NCDS process, which entails lawyers they pay to decide if my vehicle is faulty. Toyota submitted a brief document saying they had examined my vehicle and it had no problems whatsoever, they may have existed but were “fixed” (a deliberate lie) and no defect is known with this model (a provable lie as well). My documentation, which was all from the dealer, showed that they couldn’t get more than TWO gallons into the tank and it had a 75 mile range. The NCDS told me there was nothing wrong with it. A week later, Toyota sent me a “okay, we know your vehicle has a defect, and we’ll fix it in early 2021, and you can f@ck off in the meantime because we already have your money.” My vehicle has now literally been in the shop for 345 days and counting. Insane that Toyota would do this to their reputation, affecting tens of thousands of previously-loyal customers.

I've had my RAV4 Cruiser Hybrid for six months and am loving it. A couple of things, however. I have never seen 4.8L/100km milage. Predominantly driving in the inner city, the best I've seen is 6.2L. I wish the reverse camera had better resolution as I find it hard to see what's going on there sometimes especially at night, when it's raining or in shadow. The reverse side mirrors ("wing mirrors as you call them) don't fold back automatically when you lock the car like a lot of other modern cars. There is a button inside the car that does fold them, but you must remember to do it before you get out of the car...and finally the light in the boot is too small for the size of the boot. Otherwise, it's a dream to drive. Much nimbler than my old 2016 CX-5 by a long way. I love the way it subtly teaches you how to drive more efficiently with "drive ratings". It becomes a bit of a game after a while.

A thoroughly enjoyable review by someone who obviously enjoys his work - you even manage to sound happy when pointing out some of the flimsier parts of the vehicle's interior. (I too, thought this was a let-down for a Toyota - I noted that where the pieces of the console met at the start of the cupholders, the join was very poor and was only going to get worse, when I looked at one recently.) I don't think you miss anything of importance, and you speak with an easy, good-natured, comfortable manner. I think you manage to be as thorough as Matt Watson, but without the (at-times strained) humour. One thing I found off-putting was how you repeatedly point to the object/item you are talking about and then tap it: I get the feeling that without that tapping, you believe nobody will know what you are referring to. I feel otherwise and an "un=tapped" review would not lose clarity, because the camerawork and commentary puts the subject in clear view, but this is a small criticism. I look forward to many more enjoyable reviews on this channel. Keep up the good work!

I have ordered an AWD Cruiser Hybrid in September 2019 and just got the information that it will be built this month (May 2020). Exact date to be confirmed, but it means 10 months wait. I ordered the car in glacier white as I don’t like the “ creamy” look of the metallic white. It will have black interior and a tow bar. 2 more months now and I am really looking forward to it.

Had mine for 5 months, ( in the bright blue ) been using it as an Uber car in a really hilly town. i'm still averaging 750kms a tank. I don't think you will find enough flat ground to push that out to 1k kms. I love how smooth the hybrid system is and iv loved educating my passengers on how it all works. so many still think I need to plug it in to charge its honestly one of the first questions I get is how long does it take to charge. and im like oh no it dont have a plug. and that's mind blowing for a lot of my riders. I found the lane keep assist annoying in town and promptly disabled it, quickly changed the lock settings because it WONT let you out any door after moving until you press unlock button not even pulling on the drivers inside handle let me out super annoying. can be changed from the car settings on the large touch screen. I was disappointed the mirrors being electric folding did NOT fold in when the car was locked. iv since had a box wired into the drivers door to do this an expense i should not of had to pay. The front passenger seat is up too high and cant be changed many people hit their head on the roof. its also too close to the side of the car and the seat belt plug gets stuck sideways between the seat and side of the car then rattles, I reach over the flick the seat belt flat to the side of the car 20+ times a shift super annoying. The lack of a light inside the glove box is also odd and just indicates cost cutting. theres also no back lights on most the buttons on the drivers door altho every other button is back lit on the dash etc why ???? The setting to change the dash to a digital number rather than the gauge is named really odd ( meter mode ) can be found in the dash settings portion of the menu settings on the dash.

@@nataliecarey4853 from factory yes. the only way to make them fold is to press the switch on the drivers door. I found a company that made a box for inside the drivers door and when wired in it makes them fold when the car is locked.

Top marks for presentation style and camera work. I was lucky in buying my GXL Hybrid AWD waiting only a week in May this year. Good points. 1. It’s a Toyota so I fully expect it to be reliable and cheap to service. 2. Doing mostly country miles now, fuel consumption has gone up to 5.6 l/100 km. 3. Active cruise control Bad points 1. Not enough storage pockets up front. 2. Spacesaver spare 3. Lane assist. Car wanders too much and LA drops out frequently 4. Australia misses out on rear view mirror changeable to a screen for a rear facing camera

CarExpert Keep tyres pumped up, minimal accelerator usage, as speed increases you can double tap accelerator to drop down power use (CVT gearboxes), if no traffic behind me I drive super slow, I use EV mode up hills and petrol engine on flat roads, I avoid 60kph+ roads - hybrids love slow peak hour traffic!!!

@@CarExpertAus Liking it alot. Previous car was a Toyota Camry so ride height is a big difference which a positive for me. Boot space is amazing, recently had to take some rubbish to a tip and had no issues with releasing the rear seats. I have disabled a lot of the in car warnings like the school zone and speed cameras as that was getting on my nerve after a while. I heard reviews mentioning the lack of a heads up display which i have no issue with. Dealership was fantastic from first looking at the car to pricing and then delivery, when taking the car for its one month check up, the dealership sales team ask me for my feedback on the vehicle which i was happy to provide.

I was going to get one to replace my C-HR until I found out that they can only tow 480KG braked. Then I got excited about the new Toyota Venza hybrid but in true Toyota fashion they make it in the US and won't sell it in right hand drive. They must have forgotten how to do that after making the Kluger in the US. Then I got excited about the Rav4 PHEV but they won't sell that here either. If Hyundai/Kia could make a car interior that didn't make me throw up and seats that were not made from a foam/concrete blend I'd buy one.

I just bought the new Yaris Cross Hybrid 2 wheel drive. I work in a service center for this brand and I really like the look of these cars, side and rear profile, Im not a massive fan of the front profile. I love the interior despite what others think of it (being hard plastic and colour of interior). I like where Toyota is heading in the new cars and it's technology. Also I like that Totoya took a risk in the Yaris Cross with its colour schemes for outside such as latte & electric blue and the interior with brown trims and a hard plastic look.

Cannot find my old comment, but got our today, while it's the early days (only got 50km at the clock) and I really enjoyed the 30km ride home (was getting about 9.7l/100 but I'm assuming that because it was low speed so the engine was switching between electric and normal a lot) I don't really have any complaints, I do like the suspension alot and the screen the one thing I can say is I cannot work out for the life of me how to open the boot with the key, I swear I've tried everything, the little red light is coming on so I assume it's just me not holding it down long enough Overall for the 50km it's been driven, I really like the car

Thanks Paul. I’ve owned the 2020 model for 18 months. Watching your review it seems they’ve not changed anything in the 2021 model. This says a lot in my opinion. Love my 2020 cruiser. Even your review on the hybrid edge 2022 has maybe three more refinements over the 2020 cruiser. I now definitely see the value in buying the top spec. if possible. The added features are great and very practical. Used to think top spec depreciated more. Not with this car ! It’s held its value if not gone up a little albeit shortage of supply issues contributing.

Paul, have you driven the AWD Cruiser hybrid to compare with the performance of the FWD? Yes it is dearer but I think you may find it gives a better driving experience and perhaps more power up hills with all four wheels providing some push.
