Day 216. 44km (81934kms 7yrs)
Having now had one beautiful weather day in the mountains it was with some reluctance that I packed up camp and prepared to descend to sea level. It was another gorgeous clear sky day and the rocks emerging above the tree line were very tempting… but I must push on.
It’s 1000m down into Porto Vecchio and I passed several cyclists making the climb up. The first - very cheerful men who’d just about finished the climb - and as I descended many more who cheerfully waved but also quite a few grimly work hard up the steeper parts. But I’d paid my dues and was enjoying the reward now, as they would be soon too.
At an out of town supermarket my eyes widened and the scale of the place, it’s been a while since I was in such a huge store. Cheaper than the mountain village shops I stocked up on essentials and enjoyed a treat of some flan. The town - despite its name - felt mostly new and after a circuit of the square in search of wifi (cafes and restaurants do not like to give out their wifi around here) installed myself in tourist information who grant one hour free wifi.
Leaving town I followed the peninsular rising and falling sometimes quite steeply around to the famous Plage de Palombaggia where I hoped to camp. But this long stretch of beach - though backed by forest was impenetrable for me. The road access provided nothing in the way of turn offs into the woods; everything was solidly fenced off. Back up on the road all woodland was fenced off by enormous properties preventing any access to the beach.
Only by taking a footpath 3 kms away to a different beach - a small cove named Plage de Carataggio did I find any unfenced land. But it was scrubby and steep. I didn’t like my chances at all until I found a short wait off the path a flat but irregular rock. Concluding it was the best that I would be able to do I picked the least rippled bumpy spot and after wiring for the majority of beach-goers to complete their return trip set up camp.
Once again I was overjoyed with a dinner of crusty French bread, French wine, and French cheese.
