You should be able to select FM on the SW bands on the FT5, I did on my FT3. You can demod FM to some degree in AM mode 'on the slope' if you tune off one or two kHz.

That's always been possible. I've been powering my 12V radios (actually 13.8V) with AC power supplies for 30 years. Way easier than using a car battery, plus you actually get the full 13.8V instead of 12V. My 30 amp DC power supply cost under $100.

I recently bought the identical or similar telescope antenna on Amazon. I attached it to the back of my mobile CB radio, and noticed the output was about half of what it should be. I then put the antenna on my mag mount on my car and used my RigExpert to find the SWR. An SWR of less than 2.5 (mostly the SWR was beyond good and evil) was not to be found on the 11m band. Nor on the 12 or 10 meter bands, for that matter. My usual CB antenna, mounted in the mag mount, has a rock solid 1.5:1 SWR or less. This antenna cost about 20 Euros plus shipping. Postage not worth returning. It now has a comfy place in my junk box. Btw, in the antenna description max power is given as 20w.
@andykirby
2 жыл бұрын
So, you will need to add a groundplane radial to the radio when using this antenna and you will also need to slide the antenna up and down to find the perfect SWR. Don't bother with an analyser as you are using the antenna on the radio NOT the analyser. Also it won't work on a magmount. Mine tunes absolutely fine down to about 1.5:1 but you do need a ground radial/counterpoise as shown in the video.
@timbookedtwo2375
2 жыл бұрын
@@andykirby thanks for the reply. Why won't the antenna work with a mag mount on my car (1.5 tons of metal)? My mobile whip looks just fine on the analyzer. Why no antenna analyzer? I use it to adjust all my amateur radio antennas. My CB radio has no built-in SWR meter. And I wouldn't trust it if it had. How did you do the mod on your FT-891?
@phils2180
2 жыл бұрын
@@timbookedtwo2375 Most modern radios throttle back on high VSWR to protect the finals so running an antenna with a poor match generally won't have the catastrophic results it would have on an older transmitter/transceiver. So, with a modern radio, tuning an antenna using the radio's VSWR meter is possible. I like building and playing around with antennas and wouldn't be without my analyser. If you have an analyser, saying "don't bother with it" is just daft.

Two minutes 30 into the video Andy you're hearing the audio on the handheld because of the frequency difference as your frequency readout on the mobile rig said 27.78125 and on the handheld it said 27.780.Many years ago on 2mtrs I could resolve FM transmissions on an AM receiver by tuning my receiver slightly off frequency so the 1.25 KHz difference would have been enough for you to resolve the signal.It was called slope detection and it worked. 73.G7HFS/PA3IKH.

You are a good presenter and very enthutiastic. That's the real Amateur Spirit. Back then my call-sign was OZ1LGX. 30-40 years ago. I completely agree with the community idea. We ought to set up X-band repeaters. They are not crazy hard with filters. A totally self contained - portable unit to go drop of at a top-location, to have total (temporary) coverage with handhelds in a given area - for an event or something. Have you given that a thought ? And there you have the proof of genuine Amateuriality.. I've already said 73 once - before even getting to the point :-D

I know that HAM radios have blocking of CB frequency’s to be TX, but are open to RX on the CB band. But to tell the WORLD that you can have a mobile radio that you can use on the CB band, and to run it up to 100W is something that you should NOT be the sort of information that you should freely give out. That is the problem now, so many idiots are getting HAM radios, and using them on CB or even PMR. If all the HAM’s ONLY would sell to someone that they know have a HAM licence, then that would STOP a LOT of them idiots and getting them to come on the HAM bands. Before I became a HAM, I was quite happy with my CB radios and my PMR radios. I had ONLY became a HAM, as I had a few friends that also wanted to become a radio HAM, but they did NOT wish to go alone. But that is what I think, some might disagree with my words, and some might agree with what I have to say. But whatever others think, that is up to them. Bye from Knobby
