Obviously King didn’t like Kubrick’s The Shining because, as you stated, Jack Torrance was based on King, himself. King viewed him as a tragic figure whereas Kubrick made Jack an obvious villain.
@princessofjedi
5 жыл бұрын
kubrick ignored the slow decline into madness that is a staple of that novel. jack doesn't start out crazy. he starts out a mean drunk, which king is very open about also having been. kubrick ignored that and started him out just bonkers as fuck and it took away some of the actual horror. the horror that this could be anyone, someone you love.

I wouldn't be here if not for 'The Dark Tower'. I was going through a bad spell of depression back in the 90's, and one of the things that stopped me from putting an end to it all was concern for how the Ka-Tet would escape the clutches of Blaine the Mono. King helped to save my life. When he was in London to promote 'Lisey's Story' I had the chance to meet him at a book signing. Attendees were told that they mustn't speak to or touch King, but I just HAD to say 'thanks' and shake the man's hand. He returned the handshake much to my delight. It's a pity that he'll never know that he helped to save my life. Thanks again Mr. King x

Just saying! I know of many who like ‘The Dark Tower’ Series some are even fans but at the same time they find some weakness in it or say the first book ‘The Gunslinger’ isn’t that great! Others may believe his best to be works such as: IT, The Stand, 11/22/63. Does any of this make sense to you?

the first book I ever read , which is still my all time favorite , was Pet Cemetary , the way he describes walking thru the bramble from the lower cemetary to the Indian burial ground , scared the shit out of me , it was awesome. I liked the film adaptation even tho it failed to capture the horror of climbing thru the firewall effectively , I still thought it was pretty well done. As for Stanley Kubricks the Shining , I think it is one of the greatest horror movies of all time , sure it wasn't as good as the book but film adaptations rarely are, still Jack was brilliant as was Shelly Duvall, even the scatman did a respectable job , it's a great story and a great film.

I'm a pretty laid back, content to go with the flow kind of person, like I was never one of those people with lists of Things I Must Do Before I'm 30, or things to do while still single, I guess any kind of "bucket list" thing? But I honestly do, in my heart of hearts, hope that I will have an opportunity to meet Stephen King, in person, shake his hand and if the setting and timing allows, get to have a conversation, even briefly. There aren't too many things that I really, REALLY would love to do before I die, but getting to sit with Stephen King over coffee or milkshakes or whatever, and just have a conversation... If I did have such a list that would be #1 on it. My favorite will likely always.be Carrie, since it was not only his first, but the first SK book I ever read. I got it from the library when I was 8 (I was a weird child - walked, talked in complete sentences by my first birthday, could read and write at least high school level when I was 3. And I read a LOT! Anyway - not the point. I read Carrie. I LOVED Carrie. Just loved it. And I was an instant fan at 8 years old. I am never more than 5 feet away from something Stephen King wrote! He's been such a part of my life and doesn't even know it. I'm certain there are millions of other readers who feel that way too, I'm definitely not special. I just wanted to put it out there.. send my respect and gratitude through the universe - via the internet - and maybe it will reach him and warm his heart or make him smile..😃

In the new IT adaptation they kept the children from meeting the actor who played pennywise until they had to shoot the scenes with everyone in it so that they would keep as much authenticity of fear which you lose if all the actors know each other. They warned the children he'd be very scary but to remember he's an actor in a costume. The children said they're professionals and can handle it. When shooting started the children were terrified and cried real tears. They were so genuinely scared the actor took his stuff off that he could immediately and tried consoling the kids and apologizing. He felt so bad

Have to say that Jack Torrence in the novel is far less crazy, abusive and unsympathetic. That's why King hated Kubrick's film. When I lived in Cincinnati about 15 years ago, there was a house about a mile from where I worked that I passed every day that a number of local people I knew referred to as the "Stephen King house". It was a rather non-descript house in the suburbs about 15 miles north of downtown Cincinnati, and it could be an urban legend, but the story was that Stephen King owned that house. I lived up there for about five years, and never heard of him visiting the area when I lived there, and I never saw a car in the driveway or kids playing in the yard when I rode by, but the grass was always cut, and when it snowed, the walk was always shoveled. My guess is if the story was true, that he had so much money that it made sense to put it into real estate, and just pay a caretaker to cut the grass and shovel the walk. For all I knew, the house was probably furnished also, so if he ever visited the Cincinnati area, he had a place to stay as opposed to a hotel room. It is also possible that he may own houses like that in many of the major cities around the US, just to have a place to flop if he is traveling. If I had as much money as he does, I would do it. On the other hand, it could be an urban legend...

Honestly, same. I've always hated mishandled book adaptations but Kubricks is it's own piece.

@@tatiaromero yes I think it is. I can feel for King in one way but Kubrick's the shining didn't really do King any harm. Don't think so anyway

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is an excellent story and would make a great movie. Dolores Clayborn and the Sawshank Redemption, are up there with Stand By Me as the best movies. The Shining and Cujo stunk.

King is a great author one of the best to ever to do it, but to say jack wasnt perfect for the shining downplays Kubrick's brilliance in filming that movie, its to iconic.

My grandma has a bookcase consisting of all of the original editions/releases/prints (whatever) of each of his novels. I hope to end up with it someday. Pet Sematary continues to scare TF out of me (you forgot to mention when talking about his Ramones fandom that they wrote a song just for the movie in addition to one of their existing songs being featured on the soundtrack). I don’t HATE the 1980 adaptation of The Shining but there’s one from the 90’s that’s better IMO.

He’s like our state bird. Proud to be from Hampden. Wish he could have been my English teacher. Also no one from away knows how to say our town’s names. Maybe we’re wrong? 😅

Frankly, since Dreamcatcher I wouldn’t put it past him to write about a haunted toaster.

Eyes of the dragon was the first king book I read. I did a book report on it in grade 4 or 5 I think. I quite liked it.

Stephen King is my all time favourite writer. The first book I ever read was Cujo in 1986. My favourite is IT. I've read it about five times. I hate Kubrick's The Shining.

Same. Loved the made for tv movie. Wish we could have stuck Jack (Nicholson) in that!
