(Cover of audio tape says, “local songs”) Kit Porter explains that this audio tape was probably recorded at a Title VII Multilingual/multicultural party in the 1970s or early 1980s. However, she no longer remembers who was there. She says, “it sounds like I am doing the recording and I hear myself saying one of the songs is my favorite. Also, think I remember playing the spoons. I think I hear the voices of Carmen Taimano, Lydia Taisican and Juan Ichara. I used to know these songs, but it is now more than 40 years later. It is still a joy to hear these friends and colleagues again. Please add a comment to identify the singers, speakers, location and/or songs. Also, please any memories you have. Or contact me at kpvcollection@gmail .com. “
Introduction by Kit Porter
There are 180 digitized audio tapes (others not digitized) from between when Isaac Calvo hired me in 1975 to establish the Title VII Chamorro and Carolinian Multilingual/ Multicultural programs in the new Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands to 1983 when I retired as the first president of Northern Marianas College. I have not finished digitizing photos, documents and audio tapes from that time, but want to start sharing this audio containing the music I love.
The overall collection includes my personal audio tapes sent to my family, audio tapes given to the CNMI DOE that I rescued from the trash after a typhoon, and tapes that were boxed at my home when it was the NMC library (so the college could receive candidacy for accreditation) and were shipped to Massachusetts by mistake in 1983 and remained in storage for decades.
