Inflammatory myopathies make up a heterogeneous group of rare disorders characterized by immune-mediated muscle injury and inflammation. Based on the clinical, morphologic, and immunologic features, three disorders-polymyositis, dermatomyositis, and inclusion body myositis-have been described. These may occur alone or in conjunction with other autoimmune diseases, such as SS. Women with dermatomyositis have a slightly increased risk of developing visceral cancers (of the lung, ovary, stomach).
The term mixed connective tissue disease refers to a spectrum of pathologic processes in patients who clinically present with several features suggestive of SLE, polymyositis, and SS; they also have high titers of antibodies to an RNP antigen called U1RNP. Two other features of mixed connective tissue disease are the paucity of renal disease and an extremely good response to corticosteroids, both of which suggest a favorable long-term prognosis.
