I bought an original 1986.5 Hardbody 4x4, manual transmission, loaded and brand new that first model year back in 1986 for $18,000. 140-hp V6. It was a fantastic truck. Now for my sixty-fifth birthday I treated myself to a low mileage Nissan certified pre-owned 2022 4x4 Frontier. I absolutely love it, and all the new features and improvements, and that 310 HP isn't so bad either.

@@diulaylomochohai the biggest thing was warped brake rotors and a caliper hanging up by 6000 miles. The truck started pulling to one side and the rotors started pulsating. They didn't seem to take my concerns about it seriously, said that they would order rotors for it and call me back but wouldn't listen that I felt like a caliper was hanging up intermittently. They never did call me back but I didn't trust them to take care of the problem correctly anyways so I went ahead and put extreme duty rotors and pads on it myself and inspected and serviced the calipers, that way I knew it was done right. They had already botched one of my "free oil changes" by leaving oil all over the bottom of it and by the time i got it home, i could smell oil burning off of the exhaust. If I've got to crawl under it, clean it off and remove the inspection cover and make sure that the oil filter is tight and not leaking, what do I really need them for to begin with?

I've narrowed it down to the Frontier or Ford Maverick, as I'm not impressed with the Ford Ranger or Chevy Colorado, and Toyotas in general due to their dealerships. I think an SV Frontier would be great because it's smaller but not compact like the Maverick, and I could still tow some things if I wanted to. Hey Tom, I've had quite a few Nissans and 3 of them have been the trucks/SUV's and they've all been great. The Altimas (unfortunately) had CVT transmissions that did have a lot of problems. I like the new Frontier because it has a true 9 speed, non-CVT transmission. So far, they have been pretty bullet proof. I have 20K on mine and no worries but know others with 2022's with 70K miles and no issues at all. I love Nissans, but wouldn't buy one with a CVT at all due to the poor reliability of those. But their normal transmissions are generally pretty reliable.

You mentioned in your video that if your tail gate is down, it will beep at you when you're backing up and apply your breaks. You mentioned that you can disable the breaks if you push the "P" button. My Ford F150 drives me nuts when backing up my boat with my tailgate down. My truck does not apply the breaks, but beeps at me very loudly. I can't disable the beeping, especially if someone is trying to talk to me from the outside. So does that "P" button on your dash also disable the beeper?

Great video, I'm really enjoying your content. I have a 23 Pro4x with 1000 miles and am wondering if my transmission is acting normally. When accelerating, if I then take my foot off the accelerator quickly the transmission stays in high revs for 1-2 seconds after, then shifts to lower the RPMs. I've never driven a car that does this. Is this normal?
@AllThingsOverlanding
10 ай бұрын
I've noticed that too. I think it may just be the way the 9 speed behaves, because the programming is trying to prevent unnecessary gear hunting, so if it immediately shifted down when you let your foot of the gas and then got back on the gas, you'd have no power and it would have to shift back down. At least that's my guess, haha.

Nope. And if you didn't modify it, you would be fine for sure. I'm also experiencing that same weird transmission issue where it's hunting for gears, mainly around 1st-2nd when in stop and go traffic. I've got about 3,500mi on my P4X, hoping it irons itself out after it "learns" how I drive, though I fear that time has already passed. They say the first 1,200-1,500mi is the learning period. Otherwise, totally love my truck!

It did take a bit for mine to smooth out. I had 2500 miles on mine by July of this year and then I drove it all the way from Indiana to Wyoming and spent 2 weeks offroading it and sleeping in my roof top tent. The truck did great and I probably put 5,000 miles on it in about 2 weeks and it definitely "learned" a lot I think from all that driving and has smoothed out quite a bit.

I bought a new 2022 SV 4x4 fully loaded and love it. Had a few issues, but, what first year model of any vehicle doesn't have some issues. Thankfully, the dealership I purchased it from has a fantastic service department and corrected everything promptly. I'm so relieved you didn't complin about hoe "HARD" the steering is. I'll be 64 in three weeks and took my drivers test in 1976 in a truck with three on the tree, manual brakes and manual steering, now that was hard steering. Too many people have become spoiled with the electronic steering. I prefer power steering over electronic steering as I feel power steering gives me more awareness of the terrain.

I found that to be amazing in Oklahoma. I have had mine since feb of 23 very close to your model. my frustrations not hates, I dont understand for being a pro4x why i had to upgrade the center mirror to get a garage door opener, I dont understand for being a pro4 x why i had to pay to upgrade a locking rear tail gate..

I was told by the dealer the tranny needs to learn the driver. Here in Canada if you want the Fender, leather and the sunroof on the PRO4X, you have to go luxury. They all come as a package, I’m surprised it’s not like that in the US as the truck is built in Tennessee. The Pro4X luxury or not only comes in the 5 foot bed if you want the 6 foot you have to go to the SV. The SV no Bilstien a lower ground clearance, no skids, no locking diff, no fender/sub.

@AllThingsOverlanding

It kind of depends on what you want. I've seen a lot of trucks with the 6" lift which seems like a lot on these trucks (could cause driveline problems and other issues). There's also a lot more cutting to do to run 35's on the 6" lift which kind of seems to be the point of the larger lift. I personally have a 2nd gen Frontier with a Titan swap, 4" lift and 35" tires so when I bought this truck, I wanted to keep it a bit more mild so I didn't have to chop up the truck or do extensive mods. Reliability and simplicity were my goals so I went with the smaller lift and 33's. Again, just depends on your goals!

Would you prefer the cloth seat over the leather seat? If so can you explain why? I’m looking at getting a frontier so any insight is appreciated.
@AllThingsOverlanding
4 ай бұрын
I personally do prefer the cloth seats over the leather seats for a few reasons. To get the leather, you have to opt for the (I think it's called) comfort package which is about $2750 and includes sunroof and some other options (been a year since I bought the truck so I may be off on that, but that's what I remember). To me, it wasn't worth that additional cost for those things. Also, I've seen some evidence that the leather seats (most of which are actually vinyl) are showing wear way worse than the cloth seats. Then lastly, since you can get heated cloth seats, that was the primary thing I wanted, living in the midwest. Hope that helps!

No idea. People commonly complain about the heavy steering and poor turning radius. I just traded my 19' f150 2wd powerstroke in on a new 24' nissan frontier pro 4x. I miss the the room I had in the f150, as it turns out I miss the towing ability too. I knew I'd l miss these things. I have a one man lawn mowing hustle, 6x10 utility trailer, 2' sides and drop down gate, with zero turn, push mower, weed eater and blower. I will say I drive the truck more for other reasons than the little bit I use it for the mowing hustle. This is the truck I'll retire with. I've owned lots of trucks big and small. Years ago I owned a 92' chevy S-10 Tahoe 4.3 V6. All I can say is WOW! Manufacturers have come a long way with power! This engine, transmission, styling, tech and comfort are spot on! I do not like the nanny's. I suppose it's nice to be able to push a button and disable some of them. It drove me nuts the first time i hooked up my trailer and tried backing up...frontier slammed on the brakes and stopped me dead in my tracks. I thought that I had it figured out by disabling emergency braking in vehicle settings but then sadly mistaken by default it came back on when i shut vehicle off and turned it back on. Only thing so far that has me a little frustrated is a noise coming from the rear of the vehicle when I take off from a stop sometimes. Sounds like something is loose, or squeaky. I'll be getting under the truck to inspect once weather is better.

@@AllThingsOverlanding yeah. Small inconvenience that I have to live with. But I do have faith in its longevity. Especially the engine.

Its smaller than other mid sized trucks which is a win for offraoding, the downside is that it cant fit 33" tires. which is a pretty big fail.

I love my Pro4x. I was bummed it only came with the 5' bed, but I understand that the longer bed negatively impacts the entry and exit angles, and this is geared more towards the off road life. Yes, the turning radius is large, but you get used to that fairly quickly. The steering is much stiffer than the Toyota, but I like that. The Toyota has electronic steering. I test drove the Toyota, then immediately test drove the Nissan. The Toyota felt much more impacted by outside steering influences, where the Nissan felt much more stable. The interior of the Toyota also felt super dated. I got the Nissan fully loaded and was out the door at 50k, and that was with a 10 year, unlimited, bumper to bumper warranty. I would have added another 5k at least with the Toyota, with no warranty. Lastly, the Toyota came with a lift over standard, whereas the Nissan didn't. That said, they have the same exact clearance, so if you do put a lift on the Nissan, you will have more clearance than the Toyota. In all, I think I made the right choice for me.

All great points. I think these trucks are way underestimated, but I've got a bunch of friends with Tacomas and I can pretty much do anything they can do while not driving the same truck as everyone else, :D.
