It’s also about alignment, similar to the way animal that ram align their spine. If you punch with all 4 knucks flat onto the target, you’re compromising alignment and also will probably break your pinky and ring finger because they’re weak and misaligned.

To answer everyone’s question. The front two knuckle bones are bigger and can spread the impact better. If you punch with the back three knuckles, all knuckles has to land, if you land with only ring finger or pinky finger, you’ll get a boxers fracture. Back three knuckles has a bigger risk because you have to spread the impact on 3 bones.

My hand is the same way.. My Index and Middle Finger Knuckles stick out further than the rest of my hand.. So when I used the Makiwara it was clear this was my natural punch.

Once you're on the receiving end of it, you'll understand. I recommend you find a dojo and ask someone to demonstrate on you.

I don't much about martial arts I was an unlicensed pit fighter for many years, always my full fist we're connecting take pieces of your face off blinded people but it's a different world not much discipline and the surgery on my hands was enough to call it a day.
