This video contains:
👉🏻 Reflective Wind Spinner: this one translates rotating motion into a repeating expanding (or shrinking) circle. An interesting one of many ways to connect rotational motion to translational motion.
👉🏻 KaleidoFlow Fluid Cell: the phenomenon of streaming birefringence colorfully reveals the temporary shear stresses induced in a liquid by a moving plastic sphere.
👉🏻 Splat Pig Ball: water filled ball made of an extremely elastic and sticky (tacky) soft polymer. This toy can regain its initial shape after extraordinary deformation- as caught in 240 fps slow motion (see the replay).
👉🏻 Magnetic Pendulum Array (exploratorium): 21 aluminum pendulums, each with a large magnet affixed to the end. The magnets allow kinetic energy to be shared. Note how the energy of the end pendulum is transferred to the rest in two steps- 1) the magnetic fields interact to damp the motion until 2) the end pendulum is captured into synchronized motion with the rest, allowing the energy to propagate to the front pendulum. 🌟 With special thanks to the Exploratorium!
👉🏻 Levitating Mini Moon Lamp: tapping the floating illuminated Moon turns this LED lamp off and on in this strange design.
👉🏻 Spherical Lens: an 11cm in diameter sphere of fused quartz. Telescope Peak as refracted through a crystal ball from the vantage point of the Devil's Golf Course. From a road trip to Death Valley National Park last year.
👉🏻 Unique Newton's Cradle @physicsfun
1) Modern LED Newton’s Cradle: the classic physics demonstration of conservation of momentum and energy cleverly updated with LEDs and light sensors that synchronize color with changes in motion.
2) Magnetic Newton's Cradle: the famous collision demonstration reimagined with opposing magnets as the pendulum weights- shown here in two modes of operation. Initially the collision pattern looks similar to the traditional colliding spheres version but quickly goes chaotic- the magnetic field of each weight interacts with all the other magnets simultaneously making the system nonlinear. A 1990s desk toy by Fascinations- sadly no longer in production.
3) Giant Newton's Cradle: industrial model made with galvanized aircraft cable, aircraft aluminum for the frame, and 1.5 inch one-half pound nickel plated chrome steel spheres. (0.23 kg and 3.8cm in diameter each) The classic demonstration that shows the curious behavior due to conservation of both momentum and kinetic energy.
👉🏻 Rattleback: prefers to spin counter clockwise. If spun clockwise, a complicated combination of friction, precession, and instability induced vibrations transforms the rotational energy into into rattling (energy of oscillations) and then into rotational energy in the opposite direction!
👉🏻 Polariscope Holiday Decor: while wearing my polarizing sunglasses I happened to notice psychedelic and fractal like colors appearing within these snowflake decorations, inspiring further exploration and production of this display. What’s going on?
