The most delicious Ecuadorian fruit, what they taste like and the best place to buy fruit in Ecuador.
Hello from Tamarindo, Ecuador. So we've driven from Cuenca through Cajas National Park and down to the foothills. An hour and a half away from Guayaquil and we stopped off in Tamarindo because it is known for the fruit market. So there's a stretch of fruit markets, all owned by the community.
But we're here to visit Jamie and that's because she has some fantastic fruit from Ecuador. And so also, while people generally buy a bag of it or buy the pound, she's actually allowed us just to sample a bunch of different treats. We just bought one of a different few things so I could share with you some of the fruit that you can find.
There are ]many different kinds of mango around the world. They say this one is the most delicious. It's the Edward mango.
Ecuadorian green mango are also delicious. It is called the Rey or king. You eat it green and it's slighty tart but still sweet. Oftentimes, it's used in a ceviche. So you can have it as a vegan ceviche or they'll add seafood to it. Or you could also have it in a michelada.
There are two kind of mandarin oranges, the mandarinas are quite sweet and orange on the outside. The criollo oranges in Ecuador are larger, green on the outside and no as juicy.
Ciruelos. Ciruela is a plum. Ciruelo..not sure. However, these are small Ecuadorian fruit. How you eat them is actually as there's like a pit inside, you just put it between your teeth when you suck out the juice.
There's not actually a lot of flesh, but it is quite juicy. I definitely think that this is part of the plum family.
The cacao fruit eventually becomes chocolate. So if you open it up you see little pods. You don't actually eat the pod, you just kind of suck around it. Like you would a candy but you don't bite into it. It would be so bitter.
We have three different kinds of bananas here. First the cavendish banana, which is known from home. Then this red banana that Ecuadorians call aa purple banana. And then in the Andes they call it the rompe culo, which means ass buster. Nobody knows why.
And finally a baby banana in Ecuador called Orito or little gold, which is very creamy and smooth.
At Jamie's fruit stand she has lots of different kinds of fruit that I have not shown you. She's got pineapple, cantaloupe, white grapefruit, papaya, and jackfruit.
I have coconut two ways. One simply with a straw it in to drink the coconut water. You can't drink too much of it. It is a diuretic, so it will give you the runs.
And they have a special drink that you might want to pick up. It is called coco loco. And so what it is, it’s coconuts that have been filled with aguardiente and coconut water. And then actually they are buried underground for six months and it ends up with this drink.
Now if you don’t want to commit to buying the whole coconut they’ll let you try a little bit. But I have a feeling once you try it you’re going to want some.
My top three things to try are one: the mango, the cacao and coco loco.
