I am not traditionally a Chianti girl, but Il Molina di Grace really impressed me (I had the 2017), and Casa Emma’s Vignalparco Riserva and their regular Chianti Classico both wowed me, had at an Italian wine dinner. Also for sweet wines, Vallepiccola’s Occhio di Pernice was my first straw wine and it was amazing! Incredible complexity and balance.

Thank you for your great videos and reviews! I really love them and especially your kind of presentation. I know a lot of the chianti you choosed and have been so many time to tuscany - wich is not toooooo far away from germany ;-). My favorite is Fontodi (vigna del sorbo, 2016 - so absolutely delicious; i still have 5 bottles of this vintage in my cellar). And in the "normal range" i really like the "Isole e Olena Chianti Classico". For pure sangiovese is outstanding "Poggio Valente" di Fattoria Le Pupille (i guess you also like it) and at the moment i love the "Saffredi" - vintage 2014 is perfect to drink now :-) Go on Matthew with your videos and your fantastic mixture of pleasant and professional tastings!

For me you can not say CC without BROLIO. A regular CC from Brolio or Antonri reveals their quality even after 8-10 years which can easily compare to some avg. CC riserva’s. I have visited and tasted a most of those who’s worth to mention and here Castello di Brolio, Fontalloro, Monsanto il poggio stands out to me. Montevertine is on its own, but others worth to mentioning are Tolaini and Querciabella. An outsider is Castagnoli like Stielle, Pratola and buriano which are something special with 15-20 years of age (didn’t believe it untill I tasted). A very small and interesting is La casa di Bricciano. Cheers

Based on this video, I decided to take the plunge to discover the red rooster. My objective was to try and discern the impact between a Gran Selezione and a Riserva and trying to limit the variables in that discovery. Unfortunately, I could not find the Riserva in the same year as the Gran Selezione for the Ruffino Estate Wines. I was able to taste a 2016 Gran Selezione from Ruffino and a Riserva 2019 from Ruffino. Noting the variances in the different vintage years, the differences were dramatic with every single wine attribute. The 2019 was lighter in every aspect and the bouquet was not appetizing. There were hardly any tannins, and, again the body was very light, gentle, supple. Besides the limpidity, there was nothing notable about this wine. The Gran Selezione, when compared to the Gran Riserva had notable differences in comparing every wine attribute; yet, in the end, the differences did not justify the difference in price. I compared another Chianti Classico Riserva to the Ruffino's; using the 2017 Castellani Riserva, 13.0 ABV. I was amazed at the difference. The Castellani Riserva had a very notable and pleasant bouquet unlike the two Ruffino wines. The Castellani Riserva was much more like the Ruffino Gran Selezione in color, color uniformity, structure and body, but was clearly above the Gran Selezione in bouquet, taste, and body. Using the online wine attributes sensory model (WASM), WASM price pointed the Ruffino 2019 Riserva at $15.59 with a score of 85.59 and a negative QVR% of -39.98%, while price pointing the Ruffino 2016 Gran Selezione at $24.58 with a score of 89.93 and again a negative QVR% of -44.46%. The 2017 Castellani Riserva had a price point of $30.57 with a score of 90.56 and a QVR% of 52.75%. The take away? Just because a winery exceeds the aging time required for a particular classification, if the combination of stainless steel, concrete, and oak is based on neutral oak only, what is the contribution of the neutral oak adding to the wine? Yes, there were notable differences between the two Ruffino wines, but both came up very short on quality and value. To me, because of the dramatic differences in the wine, the Gran Selezione label does not mean ipso facto that the wine is going to be better. More study on the impact of percent new oak in comparison to longer duration with neutral oak should be investigated more deeply. I noticed on European wines that they usually will provide the length on oak, but do not include the percent new oak or type of oak. I think by adding the percent new oak and type of oak will help tasters both correlate and hone their preferences before they have to pay to play, and, U.S. wines should include this information on the bottle as well, why not? Type of oak, duration on oak, percent new oak should always be included on both the bottle and the tech sheets.

@@drmatthewhorkey I wanted to add that the Castellani Riserva had the James Suckling tag of 93 points; I smirked and said the Doc would then say, must be 91 points, so when WASM price pointed the wine at 90.56, I thought you would be comforted with your automatic deduction of two points from Suckling, noting in this case should have been 2.44 points reduction
