Come on, Jim. You didn’t find that gold on the Bonnet Plume. It isn’t even a gold-bearing river. A quarter-ounces like that would be by far the biggest piece ever found on that river, and would be a lifelong prospector’s dream. Yet somehow you found it after just a couple hours of panning? Give me a break. Your awareness of where gold lies and your poor techniques make your stunt even more obvious. Stick to canoeing and fishing, or get in touch with a legit prospector and learn how to do it the right way, and don’t pull those stunts on your viewers.

@sc88334

@@Ray-Willey It took a quick Google search for me to learn that the Bonnet Plume is not gold-bearing. The geology for the area is totally wrong for gold. There’s even an article from the New York Times explaining that this is why the area is still so undeveloped. Now here comes Jim, proclaiming mantras about preserving wilderness, while at the same time recklessly announcing the find of a nugget that is significantly larger than the finds that have started actual gold rushes. Thankfully, any hobby prospector can see how painfully obvious it is that he planted this piece in his pan. If he had watched just one KZitem video from a hobby prospector, he could have cleaned up his act and come up with a more believable stunt. There’s a bunch on KZitem, watch for yourself: Dan Hurd, Pioneer Pauly, VoGus, etc… Notice how different their technique is from his, and notice how excited they get about tiny little flakes. They’d only ever dream of pulling out a piece like his, and they’ve been doing this all their lives! But for anyone who was previously clueless about how to find gold, well he just made them even more clueless.

@@Ray-Willey If that gold is real, Jim needs to take down this video immediately. He will start a gold rush, whether the land is protected or not. That’s a $300 piece of gold in his pan. If it was that easy for him to find, there will be thousands of dollars of gold nearby.

Bonus Episode?? YEEEEEEEEAAAHHH!!! This has been my favorite series to date (I know, I always say that lol) BUT, the white water, the choices you made, the gold, your humor, and absolutely the scenery. Wow the scenery, absolutely breathtaking! It was all just next-level this time. Particularly the Cabin you explored, thinking of what life was like for whomever lived there, the view out the window, it was surreal. Maybe someday you'll go back with one of your sons and finally get to hike into that lake. I also liked the little spring fed waterfall coming out of the mountain. The braided section was very interesting. Much more difficult than one would imagine. I always enjoy watching and learning from you, Jim, you're a real inspiration. My favorite KZitemr and Adventurer without a doubt, thanks again for taking us along!

@@davidmodeland429 Read through my replies on other peoples’ comments on this post. Jim’s claim is insulting to anyone who’s ever done any legit prospecting before. His technique is all wrong, as is his awareness of where gold settles in rivers. On top of that, the Bonnet Plume is historically famous for not being gold-bearing. The geology is wrong for gold. That’s why the area is so underdeveloped compared to the rest of Yukon. Jim’s claim is reckless because it could open interest in mineral extraction in this area that he claims to want to preserve. So not only is he lying, but his lie could open the door to destruction of the local wilderness. Simply foolhardy.

I'll need to get back in shape and convince my wife its ok for a 70somthing old fart to paddle rivers up there. I think you are enticed by the white water. I once enjoyed a lot of white water in open tripping boats. But, as I have gotten older, I confess I find it stressful. Now I prefer a bit of white water, yes, but mostly for me it is about getting into very wild places and seen all the country and the wildlife. Doesn't make for great youtube videos. But, it is a wonderful thing to do. Consider the Thelon and the Horton both of which are very wild and beautiful but not such heavy white water. More on the barrenlands end of the spectrum. I will say that when you released that grayling you almost caused my cat a heart attack. he was at the screen going crazy at it slipped away. What a marvelous adventure. Now I have been there. We have to eat something better than oatmeal though. next trip We imagine bacon and eggs for breakfast.

It’s really that easy to find nuggets there? Jim must have been close to the bedrock in that canyon, nice spot, I think he should have stayed there for another week. Would love to watch more gold adventures on these trips.

Totally lucky as I’m new to this but ya I was right on bead rock which I didn’t really understand how important that was at the time. I should have dug down there but this was one of many times on this adventure I tried panning. So, I found basically nothing after say, 20 hours of panning in this fashion before I found this. I guess even a blind pig stumbles over some corn if he stumbles around for long enough haha.

@@JimBairdAdventurer that’s awesome man, I’m glad you ended up finding some and got to experience the thrill! Thanks for the reply and for sharing your adventures on here. Watching your channel led me to do my first canoe/portage trip this last summer, bowron lake canoe circuit with gf and some friends. It was awesome

Man, I've learned so much watching these two videos. Thank you. Subbed. I doubt Jim will see this comment, but can anyone tell me why he carries so much gear? I'm sure there's a reason, I just don't know what it is. If I were backpacking this, I would have a backpack and that's it. So just trying to learn more. I'd love to get into canoeing. Didn't realize it could be so dangerous. Sounds fun😁

Thanks a lot did see your comment obviously lol. I had a lot of stuff on this trip as the amount of charging gear and camera gear I bring to document the trip is substantial. This route really didn’t have as many portages as there’s I’ve done so you can bring more stuff it it fits in the canoe. With a larger outfit, you have more survival gear in remote areas which is essentially safer. Paddlers in these areas typically travel pretty heavily but in wilderness areas further east, it’s better to travel lighter as there’s more portaging

@JimBairdAdventurer that makes a lot of sense. Thank you. Here in Texas I don't pack my Kayak heavy, but its Texas. Yes we have some places where you might need to "survive" a few nights, but not many and definitely not like it is up north. I appreciate the insight very much. Been watching your channel here at the VA waiting on docs to get my surgical stuff in order. Definitely inspired to try something new after I recover. Again, Thank you.

Ha, ya, I used to drive past it on the way to my buddy’s house who lived in the subdivision more or less right behind it. You could see it from his kitchen window. His joke was that the home was a strategic purchase.

Thanks, Jim, for sharing the wonder that is "Yukon". While I sit here in faraway Singapore with your help my heart and mind can roam and see the world through your eyes. The beauty of the wilderness is magical. Learnt a lot from your straight talk. Cheers and take care.
