I was classically trained in piano, and to me nothing is sadder than someone with a piano in their home despite never playing it i.e. just for the looks. If you do buy a piano, I highly recommend you also try playing it! It helps with mental issues like keeping away dementia, it helps improve hand-eye coordination, and you can impress guests and yourself with some beautiful music!

As a side note to the piano, please do tune it at least once a year especially if you expect to have visitors who actually play the piano. Also, if you have friends who are musicians, get them to advise your purchase, as a good piano can be gotten for an excellent price if you are prepared to spend some time hunting, both with dealers, and places like Gumtree, etc.

I feel like some of these risk coming off as phony. Having a piano if you don't play, taxidermy if you don't hunt, a pool table if you don't play billiards, it a book shelf curated as a decoration, rather than a place to store your books, feels like you're trying much too hard, rather than being the relaxed and comfortable in your skin gentleman that all of the other GG videos put forth as the ideal way to live.
@gentlemansgazette
4 жыл бұрын
That's a bit like saying it is phony to eat meat if you do not hunt and butcher it yourself or to eat bread if you do not grow and harvest the grain or wear clothes that you did not sew yourself. We try to show you things that you might like and can incorporate into your life. If not, that is ok. A piano makes for a nice decorative object, and we have one even though neither my wife nor I could play when we got it. But think about it, how would you ever learn to play pool or piano without having access to one? I have taken some classes and practiced and it is challenging but we also have a player, so we can listen to piano music while having dinner on a weeknight, or when we read a book or others play it at parties. There are wonderful taxidermy artists that have created stunning things, why do you have to hunt them to display them? and why can't a book shelf with your own books be decorative? We read our books and do not have nice looking leather bound books that no one reads, but they create a special atmosphere, and if that is what you like, go for it. The way interiors make you feel have a big impact on your happiness. Of course, if you are just trying to impress people, then you have a hard time at the moment as no one comes to your place anyways. But it is even better to design the space so you like it and enjoy it, and to keep an open mind

@@gentlemansgazette , I will say that I appreciate the video, but on a piano, I think it's a bit odd to have one, unless you intend to play, learn to play it, or have it play music. I don't find it gentlemanly to have a piano around "just because". It looks nice, but the connotations surrounding a piano can seem (I emphasis seem, and do not mean to accuse anyone) a bit classist. Ultimately, people must do what they feel comfortable with, but it seems odd to just use an instrument associated with a certain economic class just to fill space, and not to actually play music to me it seems like: 1) The piano is just used to signal to others your own economic class (this may not actually be the case, but if one does not play it OR does not intend to learn, it would be a reasonable assumption for people to make)/show off 2) At a time where many do not have a lot of space to begin with, it seems a little gaudy to me, to fill in the space with an item that is never intended to be used. Again, I say these things without any judgement, just trying to offer a different perspective as I'm sure many people with a piano (like Raphael), are quite fine, well mannered, and kind individuals. The piano, is the only thing on this list that I felt was not necessarily "gentlemanly" in spirit.

My style runs to the 1920's. A revival of traditional decor was popular during that decade, and the furnishings were easily found and not outrages in cost. I live in a 1919 home, with much natural woodwork and original lighting fixtures. My home has the built-in book cases, as well as a built-in buffet in the dining room. On the painting area, I love seascapes and marine [ship] portraits. All my furnishings are contemporary to my home. Being a grand piano is a space gobbler, I have a vintage player upright, paper rolls and I make the music. No "stuffed" creatures or plants are present!

I've been collecting and restoring antiques and antique furniture for several decades now. I like to consider myself eclectic, but the basis of of the decor I feel comfortable with is fairly tradition, and compatible with what you suggest in this video. Additional items that come to mind would probably seem cliché, e.g 17th century maps, long case clocks and marble busts, but they still fit nicely. Most long case clocks tick only once a second so they can be a very restful presence, by the way. I do think it's good to "kick out the jams" once in a while, maybe in a "man cave" setting. When I retired my 1940 Indian Chief from the road it became quite an interesting design element for the next several years. Let's just say, no one left the house without commenting on it.

I’d say the home is the most important variable, aside from maybe the owner themselves. I’d you have a loft in a small apartment building it’s gonna look weird to have a grand piano and curated art- but by the same token most large houses/mansions just look *weird* with post modern or minimalist looks (if you’re such a minimalist why is your house large enough to house 5 families, lol).

This is interesting, very well done and I’ve enjoyed it. However, one note about the bookshelf. If one is purchasing books to put on shelves as simply a design element of his living space, he is missing the point of what books are for. As well, he is tenuously perched on the precipice of what being a gentleman is all about. Being a gentleman has both form and substance. Eventually someone will come into the space and inquire if the books have been read. An answer in the negative will reveal the charade.

I think it's rather a mistake to completely ignore midcentury modern design. A wingback chair or large chesterfield is fine if you have a Craftsman house like that (it is very nicely appointed! I'm a big fan of Arts & Crafts style houses!), but would overwhelm smaller spaces. MCM accent chairs and dining room furniture fits better into the smaller houses and apartments that most urban people are living in these days. Though you may not consider the aesthetic "traditional" in the sense that some stuffy old Scottish people didn't have it in their 19th century hunting estates, Scandinavian midcentury modern design has been around long enough to be a part of classic design vernacular for decades now. We are now discussing matters of taste though, so I recognize that not everybody will agree.

When I redecorated my home (after getting rid of the pool table which I sold at a profit but that's another story) I scoured Craigs List and Offer Up trying to figure out a design no one wanted. What got me started was an extremely ornate faux French Provincial dining room table/chairs that I got dirt cheap and to make a long story short I completely decorated my grand room into a Victorian/French Provincial theme. Even got a large faux white marble fireplace that cost someone $2,600 and I got used for $175. Interior design tip #1: Bookcases. Lots of bookcases. Bookcases that can hold other design touches are nice, but not necessary. A tasteful entertainment console is also a nice touch, but it needs a place to keep your books. Decorating with a few tasteful parlor instruments is delightful. You can play music when not reading your books. One bookcase should have a place to hold instruments and a music stand. A sofa should have flat surfaces on the arms for holding your current book. It should also have end tables with a reading lamp and shelving for a few choice books. Ideally, the shelves of your bookcases should be filled with a current selection of reading material. The first rule of decorating with bookcases is to have easy access to your reference and casual reading selection. Large pianos and pool tables look like fun, but there's a reason why people are trying to get rid of them. Use the space for more bookcases. Don't forget to get plenty of bookcases. You can never have too many.

May I suggest investing in a leather topped, classical desk. Always a sign of a gentleman. A desk can be used forever because it is functional and looks stunning in any room - sitting room, office, library etc.

I have never watched any video of you before, so I want to leave a warm compliment for creating such a qualitative video! I really appreciate the chosen words, missing hunt for new subscribers and omission of a lengthy introduction before getting to the point. Also, I cherish the respect you are showing to animals and women (13:26 & 10:52) Keep up the good work - it is seen!

If you have multiple rooms its interesting to give themes to each for ex. asian inspired in one or using colours like for ex dominantly blue or maroon in another. In a living room Hall and foyer if you have a mansion its nice to have a mix of classic and elegant modern. If the whole house is in classic and fully jammed in every corner it might look to "heavy" or museum like. But everyone has his own taste and as long as its tastefully put together its fine.

Really? Get a grand piano just for the looks? That's poser.

Or you know, you could learn to play it. It's not that hard. If you can type a sentence you can play a melody.

@@itznoxy7193 I beg your pardon? Equating it to typing on a keyboard? Do you play?

Simply owning something and pretending to have any given skill level with it are two very different things. Every tenderfoot I've ever known has mistaken the motto "be prepared" to mean be equipt.

@@Sebastian_Terrazas Yes I do. Very well in fact. I'm talking about simple melodies beginners learn. There is no reason anyone who can type would not be able to play those. My point being anyone who owns a piano should be able to play SOMETHING to a guest. I'm not talking about Hungarian Rhapsody or whatever. You seem to have a really high opinion of yourself though. Hope I didn't hurt your ego too bad.

on paintings, the partner and i purchase ours from a local artist and purchase along a particular theme depending on the room. the partner being a sailor, we prefer naval paintings, and find that the topic of the painting combined with the locality of the artist provides an interesting talking point and a little bit of character to the room.

A couple thoughts in no particular order: 1. I'm shocked that there was no mention of the arts and crafts style that began in England in the second half of the 19th century and its American counterpart in the Craftsman movement. Both were heavy on what could be considered "masculine style" with darker oak, leather, and the deep reds and greens. 2. To follow up in point 1, I'm surprised the Morris Chair wasnt mentioned in this list. Very iconic and quite masculine for gentlemen. 3. One other potential source for a used piano is piano movers. We found our (upright) on craigslist but the gentleman selling it was a piano mover. It is apparently not uncommon for people to just decide they'd rather not bother when they move. 3. On the taxidermy I personally would suggest staying away from it unless its something rather large (think bear, moose, elk, VERY large sport fish). Sure a 10 point buck is impressive bit honestly it's more for a cabin than the type of home discussed here. 4. I do have to agree with some of the comments about the piano/taxidermy/curated bookcase. They can come off as affectations if you don't actually pursue music/hunting or fishing/reading. In my humble opinion, part of being a gentleman is being who you are as opposed to playacting. This is an instance where, honestly, substance should matter. Just my thoughts but I love that you're branching out from just fashion.

That's the way I like it too - besides my 'piano' being a harpsichord, my 'palm tree' a Schefflera (trustily accompanying me since 1986) and my 'taxodemics' shells and fossils of extinct and extant cephalopods. Greetings from Dortmund, Germany
