Thanks for sharing Lisa. I've just started watching boot making videos, and your's are very helpful. One probably dumb question... How do you get the boot off the last?

+John Reynolds The lasts that I use either have a hinge in the middle, so that they break over and create a different shape that can be pulled out of the boot, or the instep area (called the cone of the last) pulls out separately. Once the cone is pulled out, or the hinge is broken over, the last can be pulled out. There's a small hole in the cone so it can be pulled, and then there's also a small hole in the heel area of both a hinged and a coned last. A metal rod with a pin sticking out of it at the bottom is inserted into this hole, and the last is pulled out. Episode 24 has a demonstration of pulling a last. It's not the normal method, and most boot makers don't have the tool featured in that video, but there is a brief moment where I show the metal rod with the pin for pulling lasts.

Are you lasting the liner, then putting on the toe box and lasting the top part of the upper? If so does the liner get glued or fixed into place somehow before you add the toe box or it just stay in place once it has time to form to the shape?

When I last the boots they're wet, and I completely last in the toe. I tack the lining separately from the upper leather though. Once the boot dries I take all the tacks out. I pull the upper leather back completely, but I just lay the lining leather open enough to expose the insole, and I glue the lining leather to the insole edge. Then I add the toe box, shape it nicely, and pull the upper leather back over and tack it in place again.

+Lisa Sorrell thank you for the reply! I got my lasts from you last week and just got the leather to start putting together my upper. One last question after you tack the outer upper leather back into place do you stitch that to the insole when you welt it or does the upper get attached before welting? Thanks again for the reply!! This is the main part of the process I can't seam to wrap my head around.

Lasting the leather while it's wet so it develops a memory, glueing the liner to the insole edge, the tacks to hold it in place--these are all things to hold it in place until you get to the REAL solution, which is the welt stitching. The inseaming stitching goes through the welt, the upper and lining, and the insole. The welt stitching is the foundation of the boot and is very important to the overall construction.

+candi wibawa Unfortunately, no. I always use the curved needle to stitch soles and I've never done it by hand. Sorry I can't help you with that particular process!
