Agreed, it's also lost storage in a small kitchen and when it's under the sink as it often is at houses I have visited, someone is always in the way of the trash as they cook/clean. And it gets dirty quickly since you can't use a foot pedal on a door. Everyone's got a trash can it's no biggie!

agreed. think the solution to the problem shouldn't create another problem. Would rather use the extra cabinet space to hide small appliances to reduce counter clutter. also the act of asking the host for trash location as if it's the wifi code--with like a raw banana peel in your hand--doesn't seem that dignifying.

Unpopular opinion: I don't like putting trash cans in cabinets. Trash is smelly, constantly decomposing, and messy. The less I can jostle it around regularly the better. The more separation and sealing I can give it the better. Trash is also moist, and I don't want that moisture creating any kind of ecosystem in my cabinetry. Cleaning around trash bins that sit inside a cabinet, even on tracks, is a nightmare since liquids occasionally drip and small bits of trash occasionally spill. And if you're like me, you like to clean the can often!

My two trash cans pull out of a cabinet but they aren’t on any tracks. They hang in the air by metal bars. Very easy to clean! I have no problems with my garbage getting nasty. Most food goes down the garbage disposal as does anything liquid. As for any grease , I pour it into a special container that I keep under the sink. I love my garbage cans hidden from view! It’s so funny how different us women can be! Good thing we get to do whatever we want!

I also love having my garbage bins hidden in the cabinets under my sink. I have four bins because in NYC we recycle paper, plastic and redeemable plastic bottles which must be rinsed out. The last bin is for regular trash. I take the trash out daily so it doesn't smell. I do take items that might be particularly smelly directly outside. No problems with spills on the tracks.

I like them under the sink. All food scraps go in a covered compost pail. Any trash containers or bottles that held food or liquid are rinsed and shaken to get water droplets off. I have under sink liner to protect the cabinet. Trash is emptied almost daily. Hate a garbage can sitting in the kitchen, occupying space. Destroys the aesthetic for me.

There's this home I saw on KZitem, to hide their TV cords, the built a false projected wall infront of the actual wall that opens up like a closet door so they can still access the cables easily. That's what I'd like to do in my own house

I use black gaffer tape to hide lamp cords by taping them over the back of the chest or table and taping them along the backside of the leg that faces the wall. It makes the area underneath look clean and uncluttered. The cords aren't visible from the front or side. 👍

I have decoupaged outlet and light switch covers to match the decor of the room. I realize this draws more attention to them, but I like the whimsy of it, and my style is boho/maximalist. I have found that cocktail napkins offer an endless variety of styles and aesthetics for decoupage. Also, if you're going to place a large/heavy piece of furniture in front of an outlet and block it, first plug in an extension cord so you'll still have access to the power. You can thank me later!

Then I have my large 13 gal trash can in the broom closet and when my kitchen bin is full I just take that bag into the larger can. That way I dont have to walk far to throw away scraps when Im in the kitchen, but I also have the large bin so Im not taking the trash outside daily. Awesome tips, Kiva. Love your videos.

Love the suggestions for hiding cords and outlets. There's a narrow wall in my foyer with a shelf built into it. There's a switch plate there that's the bane of my existence. I'm exploring the idea of using a piano or cabinet hinge-like attachment with a gallery-wrapped art piece, or possibly a framed art piece with some depth (as a door) to camouflage the switch plate, while keeping it accessible. On another wall is a thermostat (hate it). I'm wondering how/if using a gallery-wrapped canvas art piece will effect the accuracy of the thermostat.

It needed to go with my color palette, so I purchased the style I liked but purchased in white, then painted it. Now, whenever I change up my colors, I remove the blades, paint them, and put them back together. I do a contrast on the part that the blades connect to. At this time, that is the same as the blades. I love the idea of covering up appliances like a cabinet. However, I personally wouldn't cover the oven because there are some foods, like some cakes or souffles, that require watching them through the window. Baskets ! Yes , baskets for everything . Great for covering speakers as the sound is not distorted . So useful for toys , kids and dogs , toys that is ! Over long cords and extension cords can be dropped into them . Shoes, gloves , scarves and hats can all be stored in baskets by the door , and they can ' breath ' . Lidded baskets are great to hold loose change and keys . Also tv remote controls , and all the other gizmos for games are great in baskets . Finally , baskets or woven trays hung on the wall to cover unsightly outlets , thermostats or security systems . If your decor isn't boho natural you can always paint the baskets , or further decorate them to match your aesthetic .

Something I thought about doing with my speakers was cutting little inlets into the wall, almost like cabinets, and setting the speakers in there. Then you can either add a mesh cover plate, slider, or even a decorative light in front.
@Dennis-vh8tz

Many speakers have vents to increase bass, if the vents are too close to a solid surface you'll get boomy and over emphasized bass. Make sure the speakers are unvented or have front vents. Also there are speakers designed recessed into the wall - these won't be cheap, but they are designed to work properly when hidden.

Litter box? Would love some tips on this. I bought a large rectangle wicker piece of furniture from Target that could be a storage chest or coffee table. Cut a hole on the side of it big enough for my cat to enter and exit. Glue gunned around the opening. Lined it with plastic that is periodically replaced and put the litter box in there. It works and its not noticeable--easy to remove lid and clean. Wondering if anyone else has any better ideas. I looked for months and then just decided to create my own.

Hi Kiva! I love your content! 💕 Your videos have really helped me when it comes decorating and organizing my apartment. My apartment is a small 1 bedroom, and I share it with my husband. I’m continuing my education this month by joining a certificate program before I start my master’s next year, and I am in dire need of an office space. Plus, I’m an upcoming content creator as well, and I’m tired of working from my couch lol. We plan to put a desk in our bedroom, so that it’s out of sight and not taking up the bit of space we have left in the living room. I want my bedroom to be aesthetically pleasing, but I still want all the essentials of an office. So, I say all of this to ask, how would you recommend hiding a printer and a shredder in a small office space?

@@lauralaforge558 Yes, thanks for replying btw! So, actually this coming month me and my husband are moving to a 2 bedroom, and we’re going to turn the extra bedroom into an office/guest room. I decided to go with a standing desk and an IKEA Alex drawer for the additional space that I need. My degree program is over now, but I’m still pursuing content creation and intend to work from home after my military service as well. So I think a standing desk is perfect for extended periods of working, and it gives the real estate that I need for all of my equipment. As for the printer, it is going to go on top of the IKEA file cabinet. And since we’ll have additional space, I can find somewhere to tuck my shredder, or I’ll just put it under my desk or beside the Alex drawer.

@@baddiewiththebooks congrats on finishing your degree program! I have an Ikea sit stand desk. The cheapest non electric version (I prefer non-electric things since electric is something extra that can break). If you happen to get an Ikea sit stand desk OR another that is cheap particle board top AND plan to get a clamp on 3 monitor mount, my advice is to put a 2x4 on top of the desk and clamp the mount. The clamp broke through my desk twice before I did that. Probably you wouldn't have the same situation as me but just in case... Lol. It sounds like you're killing it at life! Ikea sells under cabinets track system for garbage and it actually looks quite ok. We didn’t use it because it’s too big for us and it took a while to find the right size. For the TV cable... if you've got a proper height piece of furniture below it (not a super low TV stand) then this will work. Add a thumbtack or small nail or hook behind the bottom edge of the TV and run the power cords ACROSS the bottom of the screen (but behind). Run it as far to the end as you need it, then let it hang vertically, where you will then place tall decor in front of it to hide it. I use a picture frame over a stack of books and a candle. If you've got a super low TV stand, it won't look great since you'd need a tall piece that would look disproportionate.

Putting a trash can in one of the lower cabinets won't work. I have a small kitchen and limited cabinet storage. Since when are appliances ugly? It's a kitchen, and I like seeing some of my appliances. I want to see my stove, refrigerator, coffeemaker, and glass canisters.

I have a small kitchen too. And I gladly sacrifice part of the space under the sink to hide the trash can. I don't need 15 casseroles anyways.

@@rekwa3860 yea, I have a small basket attached to the inside of the cabinet door under the sink. Hides it, frees up floor space, and contains the smell.

I'm in TX and we all have central A/C but we also all have ceiling fans. I've never found them useful because we rarely have that mild 70 ish weather where it makes a diff to move the warmer air up. They just gather dust. However I get a box fan for the white noise, lol. Super ugly.

For trash, I actually put the shallow rattan basket container on top of the grandfather's clock. It works because I only put little scraps of paper and tissues in it and no one else uses it.

We have a super high bed and 9 foot ceilings my husband wants to switch out the fan in an unused room and put it in our bedroom above bed! So unsafe! I’ve been looking into blameless ceiling fans or hidden bladed ceiling fans instead.

Contractors lie? Who knew? The placement of cabinet door fronts on appliances can get a bit pricey, especially the refrigerator. For my money clean appliance fronts that look like appliances makes a kitchen look like a kitchen.

Hi, I love your channel. I've got a question for you, "What can I do to cover a metal electrical access panel door?" It's huge (12 x 15), grey metal. It's on a wall in my hall. I've looked at pictures, but having a picture in that spot would look weird too. Any suggestions?

Paint it same color as the wall.

I have a huge electrical panel on a wall in a guest room. So frustrating! My husband hung a black framed mirror with piano hinges attached to the wall , so the mirror covered the panel, but we could swing open the mirror like a cabinet door when we need access to the electrical panel. Would a mirror look ok in your hallway? Or an alternate object, like a bulletin board or chalk board or metal pieces of abstract art? In my case, the mirror looked weird all by itself, as it was off-centered, so I found two smaller mirrors that had black frames, also, and hung them to one side of the big mirror, so the whole arrangement looks balanced on the wall. I wish I could share a picture ! Good luck!
