To be fair, the MiG-23MS was, for the most part, an export version of the MiG-23. The Soviets weren't particularly concerned about giving their allies the best equipment possible. It's also true that other variants of the MiG-23 may not have been "great", but it also incorporated many innovative design elements that just hadn't matured yet. I would argue that it was a useful step in realizing many of these technologies.

Based on the results of the tests, the management of TsAGI submitted its conclusion to the People's Commissariat of the Aviation Industry, after reading which the new People's Commissar of the Aviation Industry A. I. Shakhurin ordered the Silvansky Design Bureau to disperse, the prototype I-220 to be transferred to the MAI as a teaching aid for the aircraft engineering faculty (so that future aircraft the engineers knew how not to design), and the chief designer himself was prosecuted for sabotage. He was convicted, but not for wasting tens of millions of rubles on an unsuccessful project, but for taking a state-owned ZiS-101 car from the factory, which he used for his own needs and overturned into a ditch. Subsequently he worked for S.P. Korolev and designed lifting and transport machines.

@Optical Clarity Actually I think that pooling all the research bureaus and labs under one single structure performs better as research spin-offs are available across whole industries. Well managed, it is the most efficient way to develop new systems once "off the shelves" ceases to be an imperative but true interoperability by eliminating non-productive redundancies while reinforcing positive ones. It has become clearer since 2010. My joke may be too obscure. Most of the best designers were interned at one time or another during this time period (1937-1941) and party card holders could not fit in their shoes.

Aww, you forgot the best part about the Tu-22: its maintenance crews were almost perpetually shitfaced. Because a majority of Tu-22s were stationed at bases within the Arctic Circle, the plane couldn't use standard hydraulic fluid as that would freeze in the subarctic temperatures. Instead, Soviet engineers had the BRILLIANT idea of using pure grain alcohol to provide hydraulic pressure. It's estimated that only 36% of the Tu-22 fleet would've ever been combat ready at a given time during it's service life, as so many mechanics were bleeding the bomber's hydraulics dry in relentless pursuit of getting CCCPlastered. Eventually, ICBM technology found its way east of the Iron Curtain, Soviet chemists invented a new antifreeze for hydraulic systems, and the Red Army Air Force cracked down on libations, sealing the fate of the Blotto Blinder.

The Russian export models of pretty much any military hardware was stripped down hand-me-downs. 2. Po-2’s in NK.... 3. Russian doctrine typically wasn’t about caring for the common military person, it’s about how many bodies and machines you can throw at an enemy. I’m not even finished the video and yet I’ve already come up with all this so far, goes to show how little research was done on some of these entries. Tu-22 was OK for 1959 as a heavy bomber with a speed allowing it to escape most interceptors of the time. Was still viable in 1980s in Iraqi service as some guys managed to drop 20000lb bombs from 40000 ft altitude in a Mach 1,3 dash from dozens mile away and actually hit Iranian targets like oil refineries and air bases. Iranians could do little to counter it despite desperate efforts.

@@ShadowFalcon Do you say "Mi" as "Me" or "My"? I bet you don't. MiG = mig Yak = yak Mi - M-I Tu = T-U Su = S-U Calling all of the letters is actually far closer to a military standard, as are calling out individual numbers. For instance, the M-113 isn't "M-onethirteen", it's "M-1-1-3" Mig and Yak are abberations, because they spell out obvious syllables, and are way less cumbersome than saying "M-I-G" and "Y-A-K"
@ShadowFalcon

@@SiriusMined I say "Mi" as "Me", mainly because that's how Russians say it. Hell, that's why I say all those designations as syllables rather than letters, because of Russians pointing out the inconsistency. In any case, saying "Tu 95" is quicker than saying T U 95. Same with the designations of Sukhoi and Mil. As for the M-113, I don't think whatever the US calls their vehicles is in any way relevant to what the Russians call theirs.

the Mig-23 is actually a pretty decent aircraft with quite the nice turn ability. the problem was Arab pilots. just look at ANY combat video from the middle east. and then tell me with a straight face Arabs are proficient with modern weapon systems. stones and swords are suitable weapon systems when talking about Arabs.

@@elliotwooley2630 you are thinking of plural which is wrong. you say weapon systems when talking about multiple different weapons. you talk about a WeaponS system if you talk about multiple weapons or systems which combine to make 1 weapons system. an m-16 is a weapon system. TU-116 could actually have been developed into a commercially viable airliner/transport. The speed was far above that of contemporary prop planes, and range was great. I am not sure, however, if they could have dealt with the noise of those props.

I agree it was a quite capable jet, the reason why people say it’s bad is because they think since it has swing wings they can compare it to an F 14. The truth is that the Mig 23 and the F 14 are very different. The F 14 was a fast carrierborne interceptor. The Mig was an air superiority fighter. See people, two completely different planes.

I think that's a fair criticism, the narrator kindly volunteered his time for this film so we don't want him to do retakes. He did the accent before realising where the sentence was going. I take full responsibility for this though - unfortunately we can't change it now it's deffo one to avoid in the future. No disrespect is meant to the pilot and I appreciate your appropriate feedback. Thanks.
