Thank you so much for actually crashing on your rides. So many people with similar videos forget to do this. Also, thanks for the variety of playing styles. Most ride videos are just people playing jazz patterns. Thanks again.

The 20 A medium blows em all away, whether it's dynamic capabilities or versatility across different music.... just pure cymbal sound and not sounding like a metal can. Most of all these other cymbals fall flat in one way or another, and are strictly a specialty cymbal, so any drummer with a musical ear would still need a Zildjian medium A type ride cymbal on their set along with one of these other ride cymbals to complete their sound.

I do know one thing:If one is going for the definitive 'Black Sabbath' Big Wash? It's that '20 A Medium. But all of them are exquisite complex rides that make great washy crashes from a dirty shimmer to a bright swell. With nice integrated two toned bells. The 'Breakbeat' being the exception of course being so pointed and bone dry. I like that one for how it sounds either way. Zildjian has a sound for EVERYTHING! With 'Body' and 'Undertone'.
@DG-sf9ei

Bill Ward was a beast musically as well as an all out powerhouse. If Zildjian Medium A was his sound, there's not a drummer in the world who can down talk that cymbal. As for most all these other cymbals in the vid, they're either flat, cheap metal sounding or not versatile in dynamics between the bell to the outer edge of cymbal.

I would say that the K Dark Medium would have more cut than the K Cons, and possibly a slightly brighter tone as well. My K Dark Medium, however, is much darker than the one in this video, so it is no brighter than the K Cons I have played on, but the difference in volume is still there.

Thank you Stamp Jockey! Have gotten a K sweet ride also since the video was made, that's a really nice cymbal too. The drums are 70's Gretsch's 12,13 and 16 and the kick is probably 22 on this one (have a 20 inch bass drum too in the same finish). No mics on the kit just the sound of the Zoom Q4 videocamera over the kit, and bit of enhancing with Logic Pro. Mainly bringing up the bottom end a bit, since the camera has quite small diaphragm mics.

Excellent comparison. Cymbals still vary a good bit from copy to copy. I recently compared the A and K 21 " sweet rides at a store that had multiple copies. To my surprise one of the A sweet rides had a lower pitch than the K and both had a similar complex wash sound. My favorite in this comparison was the 20" Constantinople. I tend to play small ensemble jazz so I will close and say that perhaps all of these cymbals are excellent and the selection depends on the type of music you tend to play.

I love the K dark medium and have owned 3. My fav all around. The only problem is those deep grooves, and fairly heavy weight, make it a little prone to cracking - at least mine. I've broken two (a nearly invisible crack deep in the grooves that then buzzes). And I'm very far from a hard hitter. So I basically baby the one good one I still. I like the 21 K Custom Dry Ride as my next favorite Zildjian for all around. The crash of doom btw is a blast and great for all sorts of things.
@markkuliini
7 жыл бұрын
Wow, holy smokes. Good to know. I have broken only 1 cymbal in over 20 years, and that was actually the Crash of Doom you can see here too. But I bought it 2nd hand and the crack appeared on one of the deep bends that the cymbal has, so I didn't blame myself for it. Got it fixed right away, so it didn't spread. I luckily have 2 of K Dark Mediums, both intact so far. But I'll keep them under surveillance, especially if I start hearing buzzing. :)

Hi Tom! Unfortunately I haven't weighted it, but it's definitely lightest one I've come across. I've actually had about 5 Sweet rides before, all ok, but none great. Sold them all during the years, trying to find the perfect one. This over was sitting in a drum shop in Stockholm, it looked like a brand new cymbal, but it was a customer return. 😳 I couldn't believe it! Someone had bought this gem, didn't like the sound and brought it back. Had to buy it instantly. This is by far the best modern A ride I've heard, it's way better than any other Sweets I previously had.

Just came across this video. I own a Constantinople Renaissance ride , a bounce ride and the 24 K light ride (not gloating, there is a point). I spent all this mad money on cymbals and my favourite cymbal which I cannot part with is my Oriental crash of Doom, I love it. It's great for rock crunch riffs, punctuating notes, and playing as a secondary ride. Love it, it's my beloved ugly duckling.

We have like minds sir. I'm playing 14" KCon hats, a 20" Crash of Doom, and a 24" K Light Ride. Mind blowing, all of them. I used to have 14/20/22 Istanbul AGOP cymbals, and a full set of Sabian HHX Evolution cymbals, but this setup is the way forward in my book. I'm thinking that maybe one more higher pitch crash will complete the set. Maybe a 16 or 18" KCon crash. It is good to have something quick and light with shorter sustain right off the snare/hi-hat/rack tom triangle, and the Crash of Doom off the ride and floor tom for a big crash after a big fill, or as a slightly quicker, more delicate secondary ride (though I would not categorize the COD as delicate by any means). Thoughts? Any experience with either of those and this setup? Cheers ~SA

@@spenceradkisson5192 I just bought a 22 costantinople overhammered light ride, got it at a good price after selling my 20 bounce ride. It sounds great as a crash and ride. My advice would be to look at the 19 K dark crash OR the new Avedis line. Their rides make great crashes if that's your thing. I prefer using rides, more versatile and dark. Hope that helps.
@spenceradkisson5192

@@damnnargles Thanks Dan. That sounds a lot like the 20" Istanbul AGOP 30th Anniversary ride I used to have. It was a great left-side ride, and served double-duty as a great crash too. I'm not sure how I can get my hands (sticks) on a 19" K dark crash or an Avedis crash short of buying one. I live in a black hole for music shops. There is nothing within at least a two hour's drive from me to be able to try them out. It's all online sleuthing. Honestly, the Avedis looked and sounded pretty good from what I had seen online. A good crash/ride akin to the 60's or 70's era Zildjian A crash/rides. Hmmm.... sounds interesting. Thanks for the quick response. Happy drumming!

I think they are both on the lighter end of the scale, but one is more trashy and one is clearer. Just don't remember which one ended up to this video. But you are right, the model is one of those cymbals, that the good ones are really good and then relatively small changes can make the next one pretty unpleasant sounding. I actually had one Dark Medium about 10 years ago, but that was way too thick for my taste, and I sold it fast. These 2 I have now, I happened to find second hand almost back to back, thinking that I would sell the one I like least. But I just can't seem to do it. :-)

l Cxmo l I actually had K light rides in both 22" and 24" sizes, but I never really bonded with them. Even though I like relatively thin cymbals, K lights got bit too washy and dark too easily to be used in band situations. And I felt that constantinoples were doing better job, if I needed thin ride for my gig. Nice cymbals for sure (I still have 14" K light hats that I really dig), but not just for me.

markkuliini thank you for the response! sorry I'm so late to respond. I have a question because I'm looking for a ride that is not to washy, has a good bell, and has a good crash that I can lay into. Do you have any recommendations?

This is almost impossible question to answer. The wash/definition-ratio is so much dependent on the drummers overall touch, playing volume and also the stick choice. One man's washy ride can be too pingy on somebody else's hands. It's very personal how we all experience different rides. One thing to keep in mind: If you want it to be crashable, then it's going to be at least bit washy too when playing it as a ride. The best thing to do is to develop a sensitive and gentle touch, so you can keep more washy ride under control and then make it crash with bit more powerful hit. With a good touch you can make pretty much any cymbal work, just as long it's not too heavy or extremely light. You may not be able to use ANY cymbal in ALL situation, but good touch will greatly broaden the usability of all your cymbals.
