With all these wiring problems on this Landie, hope you have a full fire surpression system in the workshop! Certainly needs a new engine loom. If only to prevent your workshop going up in smoke!

With all that bodged wiring and especially the shorting wire, it’s hardly surprising that the diode pack is fried. I’m surprised the alternator works at all.

Those clamp meters are an absolute essential piece of equipment if you do any electrical work on vehicles, even more so than a standard multi meter, and they aren't that expensive either...

Not sure if anyone has said, but if you are tempted to upgrade your dash lights to LEDs, keep a normal filament bulb in the charge lamp.

G'Day Mike Mate I wouldn't have even spent the coin on the alternator until I knew for sure what the owner wants to do, I mean you know what their like, yes/no...yes/no...yes/no....they keep alternating on what they want to do! :D

Very normal to reverse the polarity when jump starting , probably that fried the diodes and some wires. (from that part of the world). Even push starting is more common!

When I was young, stupid and poor I used to just pull the alternator out, solder in new diodes and brushes then hope for the best. Somehow I became less confident as I got older and ended up paying the auto electrician to do essentially the same thing. Now the 'stealer' checks it and I'm none the wiser.

It is all exchanging parts but - where do you buy the right diodes etc?
@bigm383

@@BritannicaRestorations Yes, there used to be parts shops everywhere, plus most vehicles ran the same parts for a decade, not just one year, so easier to stock, etc.

On the alternator charging bulb, given old bulbs are a bit dicky, is there any potential benefit to replacing the bulb with an LED one with an appropriate resistor in parallel?
@BritannicaRestorations
4 жыл бұрын
The charge light works by a positive feed goes through the bulb to ground via the alternator diode - when the alternator charges, power goes the other way and because yo have 12v both side of the bulb it will go out As a n LED will only work one way then I do no think it will work without a lot of complicated trickery
