HDVS has a very interesting analog grain look, yet being very high res and high framerate.

@@Mario_N64The Grand Alliance made ATSC possible, General Instrument was instrumental in switching from analog to digital HD. Zenith contributed 8-VSB modulation, which is the worst part of ATSC standard. ATSC 3.0 will get rid of it in favor of COFDM.

Man, 90s TV shows would have looked so much better with this technology. Expecially sports, like Formula One, Ice Hockey or the Olympics. On the other hand, if VHS had remained the only way to record those analog HDTV programs, they would still look crap when played back.

HDTV was a godsend when it comes to Ice Hockey. Puck tracking was improved by miles just by boosting the resolution and improving color.

You are spoiling us with all this amazing footage! I've noticed the visual quality of these earlier analogue demos appears to be a bit lower than the stuff that exists starting around 1990, specifically a bunch of little dots all over the image that are very noticeable in lighter areas. Do you or anyone else know what technical change might have happened around then to make the stuff from the '90s look a bit crisper than the footage from the '80s?

Yes, from 1990 a new fully digital videotape recorder was used for production, the hdd-1000 and it used special magnetic tape unlike the first generation of equipment which used a fully analog tape recorder with conventional type c tape, the digital recorder also had a lot more bandwidth

@@haku8645 the US and Europe tried but failed, only Japan did it because only there was satellite TV popular enough, analog HDTV needs much more bandwidth than regular analog TV and transmitting it over the air would have caused all sorts of issues with existing channels due to the increased bandwidth so Japan did it by only doing it through satellite, higher transmission frequencies than VHF and UHF used for over the air were explored but rejected
