I've been using the Purple Audio for some time, and now that I think of it, I've been leaning on PA compressors for a long time. MC77, Shadow Hills, Iron, I use them in all my mixes. Maybe I should buy the MU-66 and give it a go. Good job, guys.

With my usual stance against big tech and plugin companies trying to rob me of my money i have my own home made 1176. I collected 1176 grams of lard, put it in a very tight cloth bag and play/sing through it to the microphone on the other side. And there you are, my very own fat compressor.

My preferences were all over the place but it was very fun trying to pick the favorites. Wrote them down for myself back when the video came out with two picks for every test. On drums I liked Softube and the real one with softube being my preference. On bass I liked the softube and cla with the cla being my favorite. On vocs my picks were purple audio and the logic stock with the purple audio being my top pick. Seems like the real gear wasnt grabbing me in a particularly strong way which is a bit of a shame since i own the klark version (and of course that sounds a little different like here) :D cheers for the engaging shootout format guys!

The only test where I could definitely tell a difference was on vocals and I went for 4, however that does not mean "better" just different. I'd like to know what exact characteristics people base their opinions on. Is it just "I like this sound the best" or is there a subgroup that might make a real 1176 stand out to people who really know the sound? Is it the kind and amount of THD (tone)? Is it the grabbyness or not? Is it the release speed or an alteration in the EQ or phase? When people say it's more 3d, what does that actually mean? Are they on about reverb or up from t/ buried sound? Or is it just a bit louder? I have a suspicion that most people don't have a real 1176 and are just kicking for their preferred sound? If we're sitting here in 2024 and we still don't have any hard and reliable, reproducible facts that determine what is what and why, then isn't it all a load of shite?
@sparella

Sometimes it's about balance. Where a plugin might sound hyped, hardware might sound natural, as with drums and vocals here. Often hardware adds bass width to stereo sources. Hardware also saturates small (left & right) transients (differently), which softens them, while also adding harmonics to them, which (I suspect) makes them more noticable psychoacoustically, despite the reduction in fundamental amplitude. (edits for clarity)
@StudioLife101
Күн бұрын
All of which is doable in a plugin…. Been using 1176s for over 30 years….no 2 sound the same and that makes plugins a very viable option…. 👍
@sparella
Күн бұрын
@@StudioLife101 I accidently left out the word "differently", so thanks for bringing it up. I think thats one of the keys to "3D". Software usually treats two channels identically. I suspect the differences in how each hardware unit behaves causes the "3D" effect. Just like how the 3D effect of binocular vision is based on the differences between the images, saturating transients slightly differently in L & R could enhance psychoacoustic cues of the source or create new ones, particularly in high frequencies where humans are sensitive to phase shifts. Doing this in software might be as easy as using one plugin on the left and a different one in the right.
@chizzulwinduh1941
Күн бұрын
@@sparella I understand all that, but you're using words, which is how it's always been. What I'm saying is that can we have a scientific quantitative measure of all the components that make say a Fairchild 670 a Fairchild 760? in terms of all these measurable criteria that we have gathered together to determine what is what and what is not? What are the things lacking in say a plugin compared to its hardware counterpart? What exact scientifically measured data? All we hear is, "A has a certain warmth to it, which has clear highs and a pronounced low end." What are the specific data points and measurement? Surely my point isn't beyond comprehension?
@sparella
Күн бұрын
@chizzulwinduh1941 Well, You asked what 3d meant, so Im pretty sure I comprehended that. Understanding sensory perception is in many ways a soft science, where the type of hard data you're looking for doesn't really exist. Developing something thing like the Fletcher Munson curve, or Harmon curve is a very large scale undertaking. It's hard to even ask the right questions sometimes. Next, no. It's not possible to simply say what is lacking. This is what loads of developers all over the world have been working on for 30 years! Ironically, many are turning to AI research which could solve the problem without ever answering the question. (The black box problem) As for the hard data you want, I suspect that which does exist is proprietary. For example, Id love to see a waterfall Hammertein analysis of specific gear where the Z axis is input level. But who is going to fund the research and give it away for free to competitors?
