The combination of the UA 1176 and the Teletronix LA-2A is nothing new. In fact, it has been a staple in the mixing world for the better part of 50 years. There is a reason for that: quite simply, it works. Today, I'm going to show you how to create synergy between these two compressors, and how, in the world of audio engineering, opposites CAN attract.
*1176 TO LA-2A VOCAL CHAIN: A Deep Dive Into Vocal Compression* | How To Make Your Vocals Pop
In this video, I use 2 compressors that are well-known among producers/engineers. They are both incredibly versatile, and while they were created for totally different purposes, when paired in a vocal chain, they can make average vocals sound good (and good vocals sound AMAZING). I'll be using the Waves emu's, but you can use whatever brand feels right for you. More information on the plugins below:

There is quite a bit of wiggle room when it comes to (what I consider to be) the best vocal chain. The only thing that is REQUIRED is that the 1176 come BEFORE the LA-2A. While I use subtractive EQ and a de-esser before the 1176, you may find that another method fits your needs more consistently. And that's okay. Get creative!
A bit of advice: try not to over-compress with the 1176. I generally shoot for between 1-3 dB of gain reduction, which may seem boring to some, but the goal is to catch transient sounds with the first compressor. After the light compression from the CLA-76, you're free to go as hard as you want with the CLA-2A. The LA-2A does most of the heavy lifting, and provides the "color" we expect when working with one.
(By the way, Waves is *NOT* paying me to promote their plugins or post their links. However, below, you'll find a link to receive 10% off your order at Waves. If you'd like to try some plugins by Waves, and are interested in supporting the channel, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!)

This FL Studio production course caters to hip-hop and EDM producers, but the information in this video can be used by producers and mix engineers of any genre, including trap, freestyle, dirty south, west coast, and more.
This tutorial was made using FL Studio 21, but any DAW will work. Whether you use a DAW with native VST or AAX plugins, these concepts are consistent across the board. You can use these concepts with almost any two compressors that share these characteristics, but it's hard to beat the real deal!
