[Continued from description] In a sense, Shang Tsung is kind of the ultimate character and there isn’t really a need to play as anyone else, something the MK Team clearly realised when they made him playable in MK2 as a kind of expert character for fans to master. He’s really basic here, as I said before, so there isn’t really as much fun to be had with him, but it is still great to finally get to play as him. Unfortunately, the SNES port of MK1 is notoriously pretty terrible gameplay-wise; as even the AVGN himself noted in his video on MK1 ports, the controls are incredible stiff and inconsistent, executing moves is really difficult, and the whole thing just seems a bit lacking. This means that being able to change into other characters isn’t all that useful because trying to execute their moves is near-on impossible sometimes, and so I had a tendency to just use Goro instead. Strangely enough, the best person to use against Goro himself was actually Shang Tsung, though mainly because at least I could consistently use his fireball attack. Ah well; maybe if someone eventually hacks the arcade version, we might be able to get a bit more use out of this. MK1 Shang Tsung is really unique and fascinating therefore, but I can see why they didn’t continue with him. He was presumably a bit of a lazy character created to save on memory, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they had ideas for bosses like Shao Kahn already by this point, but simply weren’t able to implement them due to memory limitations. Still, Shang Tsung and Goro make for a brilliant and incredibly iconic combo, and would start MK’s unique trend of having the sub-bosses often be more interesting than the main bosses. Speaking of which, next time we take a proper look at MK1 Goro.

I'm pretty sure "Boss Shang Tsung" in MK9 cannot transform into any (playable) character, at least not in a single match. He can transform into whoever you are playing as and two other characters (seemingly picked at random)

@@manuelmadama1636 I last played the game sometime near 2013 but I remember that those two other characters where also fixed. It's not like he would change into Freddy Krueger at random, which is kinda sad u_u As overpowered as this old Shang Tsung was, this is the only one remarkable as all of the 3D ones were kinda lacking.

Ah, cheers, I've never gotten a straight answer on that for some reason. I've had people swear he could be anyone at once, or maybe that was through a mod? I don't remember; pseudo-bosses don't really do much for me anyway, hence why I'm pretty reluctant to cover a lot of modern titles where the boss is just a regular characters with a few buffs or whatever.

@@AdmiralMcFish I looked it up and Manuel was right. Although it seems that Tsung can only morph into anyone (for a max of 2) you previously defeated in that ladder. And yeah, some of the new bosses in games seems to be just 'uninspired'.

@@AdmiralMcFish Heh, it would be hella hard to make Shang Tsung able to morph into any character in the game in a single match, since the game would have to keep all characters loaded into memory. Since modern Mortal Kombat doesn't use pallette swap characters and movesets are unique, there's no shortcuts for that, and even if the game had enough memory for it, the load times before the fight would be ridiculously long. That's why Boss Shang Tsung only morphs into whoever you're playing plus two other characters. Because that's the max the game was able to handle without issues, 4 characters loaded into memory, like in the tag mode.

Hey man, thanks for showing MKCE on your channel. Was really interesting to read your insights on both bosses. It’s funny, whilst Goro has always been my favourite character in the whole franchise and it was my desire to play as him that at first motivated me to pursue this hack, I was always more curious to find what playing as MK1 Shang Tsung would be like, just because he seemed so alien and different from any other version of any other character in the franchise. Of course, in practice Goro is the more practical of the two to use (aside from the fact that you can morph into Goro as MK1 Shang Tsung). Sill it was good to be able to make the answer this question after all these decades. I was just surprised that it was my hack to do it. I have no doubt though that MK plus will eventually come out and eclipse MKCE. Still, I’m glad I was able to achieve this childhood dream on the version of the game I grew up with. (Well sort of, I technically grew up with the PAL version, but the US version was all I had on hand at the time and I figured it would be more accessible to more people.) It turns out that the PAL version is actually somewhat less stiff and this is probably why I don’t remember the game being so janky as a child. I do intend to eventually port MKCE to PAL version, but I don’t have as much free time as I used to have unfortunately.

No problem man, thank you so much for making it! You fulfilled one of my biggest white whales, by doing so, particularly as I'm pretty open about how much of a Goro fanboy I am. And yeah, I likewise had a pretty big fascinating with MK1 Shang Tsung; he's just so...weird, and almost unnerving in a way, I'm still so fascinated by how they programmed him. A funny thing about most of this kind of stuff (boss hacking and the like) is that a lot of people want it but few people know how to do it, simply because it just isn't well known or shared enough. I try to share everything I do learn or find out for myself, but there's still a lot I just plain don't know anything about, and while there clearly are groups out there dedicated to hacking and modding like this, they tend to be pretty secretive from what I recall. It would be awesome if you could do a PAL version at some point, but, hey, even this as it is is still a triumph in my opinion, and I'm sure a lot of people really appreciate it. Also, thank you for sharing it for free as opposed to trying to charge money for it, like that one guy did with his genesis hack!

@@AdmiralMcFish Thanks mate! Will let you know with a comment on this video when the next release is out. Yeah that Valentino guy’s a real piece of work! What makes this even worse is that apparently he didn’t even do the Genesis hack, he was just a beta tester. The real hacker was a Russian guy named Worm. Worse still, It looks like Worm gave up on the hack specifically because Valentino leaked it. One silver lining though, there are some videos out now on KZitem with links to the ROM for free if you wanna take a looksee. It’s got a fair few bugs and Shang Tsung remains mostly unplayable, but it’s better than nothing I suppose.

The idea of Shang Tsung's shapeshifting being born out of tech limitations sounds likely. Rugal in KoF 94 was originally supposed to have a much bigger move list with him using everyone's special moves, but that wasn't possible so he just had specials from past bosses. I'm a bit confused as to why this game had Shang Tsung as the final boss rather than just using Goro. Then again, Midway wasn't really sure what they doing with this game since it was the first entry. Well okay we had more than one boss to milk more quarters from the player, that is the reason. Though looking at longplays I feel Goro looked to be the tougher fight, since fighting him is harder than anybody else in the game and Shang Tsung's fireballs don't look that hard to dodge once you get his pattern down. If I were to guess, I think that this Shang Tsung sprite was not used again since his limited animation would mean designing so many new animations for a full movelist that the programmers may as well have used a completely new sprite.

It's intriguing to me that Salamander, the boss in Konami's Martial Champion, did have special moves from every other character, but SNK couldn't find a way to make it work. That said, literally all of Salamander's moves were special moves; no regulars to be fond, i.e. if Rugal was like that he wouldn't have any combos either. Ironically, it's one of those changes which was ultimately for the best; Rugal having and use Geese and Krauser's signatures like they were nothing really elevated him to another level, showing the player that this was unlike anyone they'd ever faced before. And, oh boy, was it ever.

Shao Kahn had his own stage in MK3, I'm pretty sure. Otherwise, yeah, they just usually shared stages, or had variations, for whatever reason. Anyway, probably just memory limitations, I suspect. It is a bit hilarious to fight the final boss in a goddamn dungeon though; imagine if you fought Geese in Billy Kane's stage, in Fatal Fury 1, it would be so much less iconic without the proper background and music.

Part of me wonders if Midway changed old man Shang Tsung after the popularity of MK 1 because it was a little too clear that he was based off Lo Pan from Big Trouble in Little China, and they wanted to avoid a lawsuit from 20th Century.

It's possible, but, then again, Raiden and Goro also were both clearly inspired by characters from that film (Raiden undeniably, too) so I can't imagine it was a huge deal to them. They were pretty open about their inspirations for other characters too (such as Van-Damme for Johnny Cage, and Cynthia Rothrock for Sonya Blade), so I'd reckon it's probably more that he was originally intended as a secondary antagonist going forwards, and in order to keep him relevant they had to do something to change him up a bit. Just my theory, anyhow.

I think it has more to do with the fact that with him as a legitimate character, and needing to have lots of moves of his own, it would be hard to find an old actor to portray him. Characterizing a young actor as an old man could be laughed at, and denounced as fake looking. So the whole rejuvenation thing was introduced. You can see that in MK1 he has very few animations on his own.

I still have a few questions even after watching the full video: 1-Who enabled the bottom of the pit? Is this a rom hack? 2-Can Shang Tsung, posing as the other characters, perform their respective fatalities? If yes, could you do a movie, even if it was against a dummy P2? 3-Can Shang Tsung face cpu reptile? I know that for Goro it would not be possible by normal means since in MK1 he has no fatality, but I still dont know about Shang Tsung. 4-What happens if on a 2 player battle one character defeat Shang Tsung? Does the game reset? Does it show the story ending of the winner?

It is a hack, yeah; I always state "boss hack" in the title when using a hack. Anyway, I honestly don't know the answers to any of those questions; haven't played the hack enough to know (and despite being a great hack, the SNES version is a bit crap, so I never really go back to it). In answer to your questions: 1- The Bottom of the Pit is added to the normal stage rotation as part of the hack. 2-Yes, Shang Tsung, posing as the other characters, can perform their respective fatalities. I think there might be other videos demonstrating this, but you’ll have to search them out yourself. 3- Yes, Shang Tsung can face cpu Reptile. 4- If Shang Tsung loses in a 2P battle, the result is much the same as when player controlled Shang Tsung loses in a 1P battle - his death animation will play, but will be cut off by the continue screen. This is actually part of the hack - in the original game of you used PAR or game genie to play as Tsung in a 2P game then the result would be as you describe - the game would proceed to the winner’s ending.
