On Tuesday, Clearwater Marine Aquarium successfully released 12 critically endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles off the east coast. 10 of the turtles (all named after national parks,) were transferred to CMA for care from the New England Aquarium and National Marine Life Center following a cold-stun event in Cape Cod that resulted in hundreds of stranded sea turtles. Following nearly three months of care, CMA veterinarians have determined the turtles (named Yellowstone, Isle Royale, Yosemite, Mount Rainier, Joshua Tree, Redwood, Zion, Sequoia, Smoky and Teton) are fully rehabilitated and ready for release back into Atlantic waters! CMA is also releasing two turtles from the same cold-stun event that received care at The Florida Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center, Malachite and Mel. Our teams are so happy to see these turtles swimming seaward after months of rehabilitation and care!
All marine turtle footage taken in Florida was obtained with the approval of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under conditions not harmful to marine turtles. Footage was acquired while conducting authorized
conservation activities pursuant to FWC MTP-23/24-172.
