If you are traveling through Southeast Asia and have a few extra days, stop in Brunei, officially Brunei Darussalam - a small oil-rich country located on the northern coast of the island of Borneo (Borneo). This beautiful sultanate with a predominately Muslim population has strict laws and unique flavor knowing which is important for your well-being (Muslim (official) 82.1%, Christian 6.7%, Buddhist 6.3%, other 4.9%) (Capital Bandar Seri Begawan, total population 455,858)
Here are some warnings and tips to make your visit to Brunei a success.
1. VISA Different foreign nations have different requirements for entering Brunei. (mfa.gov.bn). For example, if you are from the United States and planning to visit within 90 days, you do not need a visa. But some other nations may have different requirements.
2. ALCOHOL Brunei is a ‘dry country”, so selling or consuming alcohol in public places is against the law. You will not find it on the plane, at the airport lounge, restaurant, hotel, or store. Also, as soon as we landed at the Brunei International Airport, we were questioned by the authorities to ensure we were not bringing any alcohol with us. So, do not bring any.
3. SMOKING.
4. DRUGS. Smoking in public places is illegal, as well as selling, carrying, or using drugs. Some drug offenses may lead to physical punishment, long prison sentences, and even mandatory death penalty.
5. RELIGION. Brunei is a Muslim country and has strict religious laws, so if there are any rules, such as not entering the place of worship or taking your shoes off, make sure to take it seriously.
6. HOMOSEXUALITY Any expression of homosexuality is illegal in Brunei and may lead to physical punishment, imprisonment, or even capital punishment.
7. DRESS CODE. The climate in Brunei is hot, humid, and rainy, especially during the Monsoon season, which is from December to March and from June to September. April, May, and October are dry and the best months to visit. Average temperatures from 82°F - 89°F (28°C - 32°C). Because you have to dress conservatively and cover your body - you will be sweating all the time, so, wearing loose cotton clothes is your best option. I had heavy fabric pants, and it was very uncomfortable.
8. CROCODILES. If you like to hike, be in nature, and walk along the rivers, be aware that crocodiles are common in Brunei, especially around the water sources. Remember that they will see you long before you see them. So, be alert and cautious.
9. MONKEYS. Be aware of monkeys and your belongings, especially guard your cell phone. As the experts told us some monkeys understood the importance of the cell phone. They know they cannot eat it, but they learn that if they possess it, YOU will offer them a lot of good food trying to bribe them and get your cell phone back.
10. PEACE & QUIET & SAFE If you are tired of the hustle and bustle of visiting some other Asian countries, trust me, Brunei is different. It is clean, not overpopulated, peaceful, and quiet. There will be no homeless, no baggers, no pushy solicitations to buy anything. Everybody minds their own business and nobody bothers you. Brunei has a very low crime rate and we felt safe walking around even at night.
11. RESPECT & FRIENDLINESS. People we encountered in Brunei were respectful and friendly. When we asked for some directions on the street, had some questions in the mosque, ordered food at the restaurant, or debated on an ice cream flavor at the ice cream shop, people were always pleasant and patient with us. I felt very welcomed and appreciated as a tourist, and I appreciate it.
12. FREE HOTEL TRANSPORTATION. Staying at the hotel - was another pleasant surprise. Even though the price was already very reasonable (The Capital Residence Suites, $72 per night, breakfast included), besides a free airport shuttle pickup/ drop off service, they offer free sightseeing transportation. So, every day, we picked a few places from the list of major attractions and they drove us there and back for free. I hope you enjoyed my video and found it useful.
