This month instead of taking you guys around the countryside with me I wanted to sit down in my regular setting and take a good look at the past 12 months of this hair growth journey and reflect on what I’ve learnt this time around.
For me personally, when I invest a great deal of time in to something (doesn’t matter what it is), I like to take a moment every now and then and review my progress as it helps me get back into the present, appreciate that good things take time and helps me make a decision on whether or not I want to continue doing what I’m doing.
So with that said, here's a summary of my main takeaways over the last 12 months. If you have anything extra to add to this dialogue, feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section as there are so many perspectives when it comes to growing out your hair and I think we can all learn a thing or two from each other.
1. Long hair has become a symbol of freedom for me. When I think about it, this whole hair growth thing is a lot deeper than just an aesthetic. This whole environment we have here allows me to express my creativity through wearing and experimenting with different hairstyles but also allows me to connect with other people (I.e all of you guys) in a way that I just don’t have in normal day to day life so when I stand back and look at that I feel extremely grateful and it only fuel my desire to keep growing my hair even more.
2. Donating my hair when I first cut it off was also the first time I’d ever done something like that. Reflecting on that particular point made me feel really warm and fuzzy inside knowing that a child somewhere who is suffering from alopecia, cancer or various other medical conditions can wear my hair and put a smile on their face.
3. This time around, I made a promise to myself that I would make an effort to embrace my natural hair for once and through doing that, I’ve actually fallen in love with my natural curls!
I’ve never really felt like my natural boofy hair was very desirable and I’ve pretty much carried that narrative around with me all my life which is why in the past I’ve tried SO many different things with my hair.
Keratin treatments, curling wands, chemical straightens, blow dryers and hair straighteners. you name it, I’ve used it to try and modify my natural hair on the regular and for once I feel like I can just let my hair do it’s natural curly thing which has added to my feeling of liberation through hair!
It feels good to just be how you are and not worry.
So those are some of my main takeaways from the last 12 months of growing out my hair.
Again, I’m so grateful for each and every single one of you who have shown up for every step of this process and I look forward to continuing this journey alongside you.
Please feel free to leave your 2 cents in the comments below and I look forward to seeing you all next month for episode 13.
Here’s to Freedom!
