I am married to an igbo woman and its the second most important decision I have made after accepting Christ. About a decade now and no regrets. Having said that I think it's easier and more common to see Yoruba men marrying other tribes. No tribe is superior or better than another. I have seen terrible yoruba people and terrible igbo people. I have also see amazing yoruba people and igbo people too(especially my wife). Let's love appreciate and tolerate ourselves and we will have a glorious Nigeria

Yorubas and Igbos can get along anytime, as we have similar ideologies. The main problem is, injustices done against the Igbos during and after the nigerian/Biafran war. Sadly, these unjust acts are still been perpetrated, under a different face. All seaports and intl airports closed in the east, but open in lagos, etc. Love and unity between the tribes will only come, when these evils are corrected. Hypocrisy is, when you keep smacking a child, and still ask him the cause of his tears!

I stayed with them for about 6months after my service year and my perspective changed. Being a true Christian is all that matters. Before I left, I started paying attention to the language and igbo culture generally. For me, so long she's a Christian and I like her, I marry her, end of story.

My sister, Nigeria's tribalism scares me o! I was born into a Yoruba family, in a small West/Central African island. Brought up by my grandmother, a Yoruba woman from Abeokuta, Ogun State. My grandmother was considered as a mother to all, both to the natives on the island and Nigerians alike of all tribes referred to her as mama; in turn, the old woman considered all of them as her sons. So, I was brought up to respect every human being irrespective of their color, tribe or religion. I dare not misbehave or disrespect anybody because the reaction and verdict of my grandma will never be in my favor. My great shock of tribalism started when for the first time in 1975 I traveled to Nigeria. I was made to know that although my surname is Yoruba, but my face is more of an Easterner (an Igbo). You can't believe that I was made jest of even within my household. Not to mention when I became a sales representative in Lagos, I suffered both in the hands of Ibos and Yorubas. The Yorubas discriminated against me because of my facial appearance and not being able to speak Yoruba language fluently. On the other hand, some Ibos who would have welcomed me at face value, would later dramatically turn against me once they noticed my Yoruba surname. Well, with the support of our director, I spent more time preaching against tribalism than doing my normal selling job. At the end of the day and to my surprise, I had more Ibo friends than Yorubas. My philosophy of life became even up to date, “show love to everybody, and move closer to people who accept you as you are.” Also, I later discovered that they're some good Nigerians out there from different tribes with world view who are completely detribalized. Today, I deal with racism like many of you in the diaspora. If you ask me between tribalism and racism which one is better, I would say “none” is better, but I think I can endure racism more than tribalism. The reason is that one being outside of his country/continent, can become blind to some of these things (although in some situations it’s almost impossible) rather than suffer tribalism within one’s country and within his own people, is that not painful and a tragedy, considering that Nigeria is not the only country with different tribes or nationals? Other societies even some European countries downplay that dark part of their history. We, especially Africans should make effort to accommodate, live and let's live; after all, they say, "Charity" begins at home. For me as a person, mine at least is almost over, but I worry for my children who cannot even speak Yoruba language. Anyway, all hope is not lost, we will continue to pray, and support and push for someone like Omoyele Sowore for a modern and a detribalized Nigeria, where all Nigerians will be happy and their rights protected.

Infact you will even have stunted growth in some organizations in Lagos as a result of being Igbo with all the back stabbing going on. Funny thing was that I was oblivious of this till I moved to Lagos after university for my NYSC. I was so young and just couldn’t understand what was going on And just like you rightly said Summer, many of the people doing the hatred have no idea why they feel that way. I think the problem is actually poverty promoted by our government. What’s dividing us should actually be the strong point to build our union. Ajokuta ma mu omi in the past means that ibo people like making their Eba and Iyan harder than yorubas. This I believe made ibos strong people. Yorubas on the other hand cook with a lot of palm oil, which makes our egusi stew looks palatable. I am a Yoruba man, I love Isi Ewu, I love fura de nunu and all the rest. We are one ☝️ Nigeria. Our government should stop corruption and promote hard work. Provide jobs for the youths so they can stay busy and stay away from idle talks. The people you see fighting on the streets are agberos and people that are doing Baranda. You won’t see bankers oil industry workers, construction Engineers on the street fighting over whether ibo is better than yorubas or otherwise. If you mean couples of different ethnicities, yes of course I do. I am in one. I’m in no way talking about ‘colour’ in my comment. My husband and I have taught our children that we are all the same ‘colour’ which is ‘skin colour’ we are just all different shades of this colour. I am very anti labelling people as races or colours we are one race... the human race. The point I was trying to make was cultural differences add to the challenges in any relationship. That could be two European’s from different countries, two African’s from different countries or a mixture of any two different cultures around the world. Obviously all couples would have this on a family tradition level. But when a couple are culturally diverse the differences are exaggerated compared to those who share a common general culture.

The tribalism is fuelled by lack of justice and equity. That is the bottomline. Without these you can't have peace and successful cohabitation. So it's not as simple as you are making it and neither can it be wished away. Igbos want a balanced, fair Nigeria or without that Biafra where people are free to grow at their own pace. Sadly other Nigerians, notably the Yoruba , Hausa and Fulani are very little minded and fear giving Igbos autonomy or Biafra would make them to grow dominant and powerful. So they will readily colloborate and work with foreign powers to stagnate the Igbos. But sadly in their insecure minds, they forgot that Igbos never seek or have the history of subjugating anyone like they do to the Igbos. In the end we are all losers as other nations advance while Nigeria is in perpertual doldrums

Not sure about the grief Yoruba's have with the Ibo but, a little insight about the grief between the "Hausa" and the Ibo is that the Hausa have not forgiven ( and I don't have it if they ever will) that the first Nigerian Military coup was organizing and executed by Ibo officers and Nigeria's Prime Minister, Sir Tafawa Balewa and the Sardauna of Sokoto along with the "Hausa" soldiers and aides were killed. It didn't help that the chief officers who planned and executed this were bragging and seeming amused during interview about how Sir Balewawad killed. This incident, I believe is the REAL cause of the Nigerian Civil war. They wound left by the murder of the two encouraged Nigeria to ensure Ojuku was not given the position of Head of State. A Northern was made Head of State instead since the North believed the Ibo officers had murdered the Northern leaders to seize leadership/power. And this played out again in the just concluded Nigerian Presidential elections. Since both popular candidates were from the North, a lot of Hausa also people voted APC partly because an Ibo man was a Vice Presidential candidate. It's also interesting that Atiku did not take Peter Obi to Kano during his campaigning - He knew what he was doing. At some point, it seemed as though Saraki we're the Vice, sef. Nigeria has a long way to go and the Hausa man will never forgive the Ibo for Balewa and Ahmadu Bellos' death.

Hausa and Fulani have hated and have murdered Igbos since 1945 - long before the coup of '65 out of jealousy and envy! You can even find a video on KZitem by the BBC where their spiritual leader Ahmadu Bello was openly encouraging hate against the Igbos shortly before he was murders by the coup plotters. And hello, he was murdered by Nigeria army that included Northern soldiers although led by Igbos. So what has the coup got to to with the Northerners massacring Igbo civilians in the North and disembowelling pregnant women and babies? Did the civilians planned the coup? @@Ikenna_Dike Oh? Killing the Ibo since the 40s? And out of envy? Well this is the first I've heard of it...... Ahmadu Bello, I agree might not have been a sporting Nigerian but it had nothing to do with envy. For starters his only concern was improving the lot of the 'Ummah' and so Northern Christians too were not popular with him. And, No, you have your information about the first Nigerian coup wrong - Thank God one had to study Nigerian Military History. Ignorance is not an excuse to "misinform" and mislead. Do not label me as one who dislikes or hates the Ibo because my rhetoric doesn't sit well with you. As regarding why I still want the Ibo here, I LOVE our diversity as a country. It's our strength - if only the majority realized but hey....if a people desire their my, they should be given it. After all, no one should be held in bondage. I'm all for Biafra. I STRONGLY believe that the Ibo can have Biafra within Nigeria by having all South-South Eastern dtates come together and develop and improve their lot. If the Government refuses to give you your own border, pack your bags and go home and develop home. ACTUALIZE Biafra. Make all the improvements that the 'Zoo' has failed to make. You're lucky, you have lessons of foolishness in bounds to learn from the 'Zoo's' repeated mistakes. So make yourselves STRONG. Let Nigeria envy you and want to become you or have no option but to vote for you because it wants its land to be like yours is - prosperous. And honestly encourage people to return home to actualize this. You have the land and resources. Yes, you will have to forfeit any property that is in Nigeria - you would have to anyway if Biafra is granted to you - but, it will spur you on to succeed. The South-South and South-West States like before have no interest in being a part of Biafra. Not to worry. Suceef WITHOUT THEM. Let them eat their words and also beg to become a part of you. We can carp on here about perceived ' truths and untruths' or you can apply this proffered and logically-simple solution....call everyone to return or go home. Meanwhile, there is an International market in Anambra with over 400 stalls that is overgrown with grass and filled with only God know what because no one has agreed to take a shops there?? What a WASTE. If the Equity you are looking for entails other States in Nigeria to sell you land or houses( which has actually been done for you yet no non- Ibo canTRY IT in Ibo land), give you shop space, give you the position of Vice - President etc don't hold your breath..... Just move on. A couple years back, 2016 or 2017 I believe, the chant for "We want to go! We want to go!" started again. I was confused. If you want to go must you announce it? See, YOU have a CHOICE. You have a HOME. Please go and live there in peace without concern about the nonsense you'll receive if you continue to live in the "Zoo". Haba. Do you know how many people wish they had your opportunity yet here you are picking useless inconsequential quarrel on KZitem. Have you ever joined a protest against government? Have you ever believed in a cause and dedicated your life to it? Have you ever given everything you have away to people you do not know but know they would die if you did not sacrifice for them? 1)Hausa's and Igbo were at war, Yoruba came and make peace and you are calling that a betrayal?. During the war, were you not killing people? Pls study history from your side and also from Yoruba and Hausa sides too. When the Yoruba's were unable to stop the war(killings), they stopped the transportation of food to the east. So that when the soldiers didn't have something to eat they will not be able to fight. Men, women and children were dying of hunger in the east, while those that were fighting for them were robust. 2)It is the level of education, intelligence, understanding and maturity of the Yoruba's that make them be at peace with everyone that some people translated to be hypocrisy. 3)Tribalism happens all over the world. Even when the Igbo's go on their own, there will still be tribalism among them. And if care is not take they will still want to divide again. Because even now there's discrimination among them i.e Nnewi people are better than Enugu people etc. It is Yoruba land too. Ijebu people like partying, Ibadan are sharp mouthed etc. Likewise in Hausa land too. My people we are the same in the presence of our Heavenly Father, let's stop this criticism. For anyone who thinks they are better than their fellow human beings, who thinks everyother person is beneath them, who thinks others are jealous of them, who thinks they deserve to be respected, shame on you, because the joke is on you! You are only here on earth because a higher power has allowed it to be so. When your appointed time is up, you go and give an account for all your hatred, pride and bigotry, and another soul comes in human body to fill in the vacancy in this earth! What are we really fighting about? Everyone is allowed to spend their time doing what they want here on earth, but does it not seem wise not to spend so much energy hating people, when you had no hand in putting them here on earth in the first place ? When just like yourself, they are just a piece on a cosmic chessboard? When that same person will also have to answer for their own actions, good or bad, when you can spend that time used in hating others to make sure your time here on earth truly counts for something? Everyone thinks they are justified for their hatred, but if we took the time to actually think, we should realise our lives are like vapour. Here one day, out the other. All these lands we are fighting over (lagos, Abuga, Anambra etc) will remain here, in this dimension, it is a constant, fixed, and will not change unless He who created it is willing. What is not constant but a variable, and will change is human life, just like those before us, we will give way for future generations. For all you know, Nigeria might be called another name in the next 300 years, igbos, Yorubas or Hausas might have migrated to another part of the world, your descendants might even be known by another name another tribe! So again I ask, what are we fighting about? We have no power over anything seriously speaking, zero power over anything. No one is promised the next second, the next minute, the hour, the next day or the next year! Make your life count, honour your creator, and by so doing you will honour others, love your creator and by so doing, you will love others, because we are all made in His image. THINK, THINKING IS GOOD, THINKING IS WHAT OUR BRAINS WERE MADE FOR! Peace!

Most parents don't go for holidays in other states with their children to learn more about other cultures. A child may spend over two decades under their parents in their geographical zone without stepping into other states to experience a different form of lifestyle. Some of their now-grown children may be lucky enough to gain university admission into other geographical zones --that's if they even make the effort to explore other universities outside of the ones in their states/provinces. This rare opportunity exposes them to other cultures for the first time in their lives. I once met an Igbo girl abroad who had never lived outside of her State. It was a big leap for her travelling abroad all the way from her State, Imo. Her Igbo accent was very strong, & had never experienced life outside of her province. In fact, her first time in Lagos was the time she had to board the flight abroad. This is how clingy some people can be to their states. They're not interested in mingling with other tribes. They'd school, work, marry & die in their states. The Nigerian university system doesn't also make it easy for the students who wish to explore by schooling in other parts of Nigeria. These Universities always prefer to fill up their admission seats with their own citizens before leaving whatever number of seats left to the overqualified students from other provinces. This makes it tough for these foreign students to gain admission, hence, discourages them from schooling outside of their states. This tribalism also affects the labour force & private businesses too. The government compensated for this by introducing the NYSC. If they aren't daft, shouldn't they mandate that every university must admit, at least, 50% of students from other states? This's far more effective than the NYSC crap. The only people that aren't usually biased when it comes to tribal issues in Nigeria are those who grew up in multicultural states like Abuja & Lagos. This had enabled me to have friends all over Nigeria. It made me fluent at calling many tribal names; familiar with a lot of cuisines; understood much sense of humour; know a few phrases in many languages etc. The list is inexhaustible. Until universities stop being tribalistic by admitting students regardless of their state of origins, and corporate orgs. start giving jobs to the deserving candidates who qualify, & not based on the state of origins, it will continue like this. PS. There was a time I went to a Calabar restaurant to buy an Afang soup. When I brought it home, my mom was irritated by it, shook her head in pity & went straight into her bedroom. I began munching my soup with fufu, & then she suddenly resurfaced back into the parlour where I was eating. She couldn't get over the aroma emanating from the soup. This tempted her to have a taste of it. She reluctantly tasted it with a doubtful face, as if to confirm the absurdity of the soup's taste. Her face lightened like a spark when the soup landed on her tastebud. And she said: "Why didn't you buy many?" See the significance of living with other ethnic groups? Her generation definitely feels this way.

As long as the person is black - preferably dark skinned. I have met devils from all tribes and nationalities. They key thing for me is the person shares my religion christian, they have a good clean spirit, trust/respect is there and we are compatible. All this tribal nonsense is small minded nonsense from dinosaurs. As for the list compiled by Igbos and Yorubas not to marry each other is a joke. People have time to sit down and compile this stuff.

You must also realize that the yorubas, always want to be on the top.they never want to see any other southern region develop.which explain why they always join hand with rhe fulanis to bring down other southern region.look at their role during the so call civil war(genocide against igbos). look at the way they worked against Jonathan in 2015.choosing an illiterate fulani ma.these people are simply jealous of the fact igbos keep succeeding, despite all the marginalization.and they will surely fail. yorubastards.hate them with passion.

Great discussion. For those of us with ancestral roots in both cultures confirmed, it is hard to understand this division. Those of us in the diaspora are trying to reach back and learn about the people and cultures lost to us, to only find separation and division. We become stuck in the between place of the people that flow in our veins not getting along. When we as the separated people already find it hard to be accepted, as we know we’re not culturally Yoruba or Igbo, it makes us sad. If you can’t get along, we don’t have a chance of learning about our people. My majority African makeup is over 50% mix of Yoruba and Igbo, very high because I have recent great great grandparents straight from what is now known as Nigeria.

I thanked our parents that they understand love and went above this tribalism. My FEAR. I see a war coming as some parents are passing down bad feelings amongst the new generations.

I was angry there because my mom is Yoruba and i stop buying food from her store just because the way she replied I'm not your sister. I have a lot to say about mom tribe called Yoruba. If ehbo man marry Yoruba woman the Igbo man will treat her perfect well and love her but if yoruba man marry ehbo woman the love is zero on balance. The beef between yoruba and igbos are 80% political and 20% cultural,,,, There are great differences in the yoruba and igbo culture..while the yorubas are more respectful of elders and leaders, igbos are more independent and dont pay same premium on elders and leaders..But the main issues like I said is political..The problem between the 3 major tribes in Nigeria has always been about political control..While the igbos and yorubas of the south have much more in common, for some reason they have each found themselves forming alliances with the north than with each other..Many southern leaders have made effort to accomplish what is often termed the handshake across the Niger but for some strange reason it has not happened. The weirdest reason I have heard for this is that the fulanis of the north who have basicly taken control of the Hausa tribe and leveraging of their number, have cast a spell on the yoruba and igbos so that they will never be able to work together and wrestle political control from the fulani controlled north..As ridiculous as this reason may seem, this is perhaps the most plausible reason to explain the inexplicable tension between yorubas and igbos, two wonderful tribes who are accomplishing great things and making africa very proud but lack the political will to determine their own destiny back home.. When you consider that the fulani are kind of an afro-asiatic people who only entered Nigeria 200 years ago and who are adherents to islamic religion, they are excellent in esoterism using their knowledge of islam and perhaps babylonian religious practices..They are a minority ethnic group but have effectively taken country of Nigeria, a nation they are immigrants in. It is in their interest that yoruba and igbos dont ever see eye to eye politically hence the insinuation. If yorubas and igbos ever unite politically, they will both be able to liberate the hausa who have been subsumed by the fulani and then the fulani will become politically displaced in Nigeria...The two biggest fraud in Nigeria is the idea of an Hausa-fulani tribe and a monolithic north. These two false ideas is what the fulanis have based their political dominance on.

Thank you my sis for at least raisings ur voice to address this issue. Part of the reason why southern Nigeria has been raped badly. The two tribes are brilliant people with wonderful colourful cultures. From an Igbo point of view our parents felt so betrayed during the event leading on to the war by the Yoruba's led by Awo. Bcos of that singular event and today they feel so caged in Nigeria and they blame the Yoruba's who supposedly back stabbed them during the Biafra war which claimed so many Igbo lives. Had Awolowo not reneged, did a u turn and join the north, the Igbo's could have been on their own now. That's the Igbo side. Don't really know abt the Yoruba grouse except fear of the Igbo domination. In the end, I feel it is more of rivalry. No one would cede an inch to the other in a supposed superiority stuff. Trust me, individually the Igbo's and Yoruba's get on so well mostly in business, socially etc. But beneath that is always that deep rivalry and suspicion. ( its not hate)

We have hatred because we were betrayed and sold out by our neighbours the Yoruba. They say Igbos love money which is an irony considering can be ruthless in pursuit for money without any human consideration.... Also during the slave era by the same Yoruba people till this day have been their identity to always betrayed an igbo person they eventually go into business with so as to plot and see their downfall. Yoruba are scared of igbos (biafra) because they always feel inferior when they are aroung igbos hence their jealousy, hatred, selfishness and constant betrayal. Perhaps they feel one day we Igbos will take out revenge on them for all evils and betrayal they committed against the Igbos over the years and past generations, (person ecperience). This could also shed lights on why Yoruba are uncomfortable with the Igbos in Lagos today and their unreasonable unfounded attitude towards them this election time. With all these differences aside, The truth is this two tribes can achieve great Things when they put their minds together because in as much as their differences goes deep, they both compliment each other in a deeper level in terms of their intellect, resourcefulness and drive for a better life and family...
