thank you for this! i'm a newbie to arduinos and my nano clone mysteriously broke the other day and i couldn't make sense of all the arduino charts i was seeing online, but you explained it perfectly. thank you for mentioning that mixing up the GND and 5V would fry the diode because that was exactly my mistake LOL

I had the same problem! And for some reason my diode burned out! Your video helped me a lot! I used a DC DC Boost converter and set it to 5 Volts. I connected it to the 5V pin and GND! And my board worked! 2 of my boards had the same problem! And 1 had undervoltage!

Thank you very much. My module was a little bit different, and the diode I needed to replace next to the regulator LM1117, in my board was just one diode. You can just take off your diode and put a jumper in the same place, but never connect your arduino in voltages upper than 5V when connected in your PC.This diode is a protection, he never let the voltage upper 5V back to the usb cable and burn your usb port. greetings from Brazil.

@@MyGeekyHobbynp this solution worked for all but one of my clones. That one originally had no pwr led when plugged in, upon replacing the diode it has Rx and PWR LEDs and then eventually Tx LED lights up but no COMs is established by the PC. I assume this damaged the CH340[C]?

I've worked on a few of those nanos, and the PCBs are decent enough. If I discover the fault before soldering the pins I would normally use sharp side cutters to remove the CH340

Excellent repair, on Nano troubleshooting. Thanks. I noticed that on both repaired Nanos, the power LED was still not illuminating-must have also been blown? Did subsequent usage present any further issues? I ask as, an electronics' newbie, I inadvertently powered up my Nano, from a 3S Li-ion battery, during testing, of a 7805 regulating circuit (to prevent such from occurring: knocking head on table), I built; must have had twin power leads connected. Thought it would have been the AMS1117 blown. You have pointed me the right direction. Thanks. Finally, as I've never worked on SMD components, what temperature do you set your soldering iron to, for these delicate repairs? thanks. I am subscribing, & will look at more of your vids, as I like your style,

Thanks for the comment. Once I had the diode swapped both of my Arduino nano worked well, including the LED. The modules continued to work so I believe the repair was successful and long-lasting. Don't worry about breaking things, this is the best way to learn (as long as the costs are not too high)... for soldering SMD the key is soldering iron with a small tip and loads of flux. Good luck and thx for subscribing.

What kind of problems have you had with the Arduino Nano? I saw that you changed the sdm rectifier diode!!! Then did you solve it? in my case the board is detected but it does not configure!!! Which "COM" port do you use? Thank you very much.
@MyGeekyHobby

You need to check in the device manager what com port windows assigns to the Arduino board and use that com port. It can be different on my computer and different on your.

@@MyGeekyHobby Yes, I did this step is I tried changing it to com3 and then com7 but it doesn't respond. I have to try to connect it and then uninstall it and then have the computer detect it again. I think that is the 'only solution .... . I will try!!!

Is it off that my usb to serial converter under 5he board doesn't say anything? I have one nano that states ch340, or whatever it is, but the other three are blank.

I wouldn't be surprised, the Chinese vendors have ways to make things "cheaper" so maybe a counterfeit ch340? :) But that would be so funny, considering ch340 is supposed to be cheap alternative to FTDI. Do they work? One thing you can try is to check in device manager if the hardware IDs are the same as the fully marked ch340.

Could I use a rectifying diode instead of these SMD ones? Thanks
@MyGeekyHobby
2 жыл бұрын
You can, but keep in mind a standard diode will have around 0.7V drop so your Arduino will end up with around 4.3V supply voltage. It’s fine for the atmega controller as the go down to 3.3V, but depending on the circuit you are using the Arduino stuff may miss behave

@MyGeekyHobby

@@xSpeed2137 no worries, and that is exactly what happened to me. Those Arduino clones are missing a fuse that is in the original design, so that diode ends up taking full current if you accidentally short 5V to GND. I’m sure it will happen to me again so I bought 10 of those diodes on AliExpress , took 2 weeks to deliver but was cheap and I fixed at least 2 of my broken Arduino already :)

I suspect the ch340 serials to usb chip is broken ... if you have another nano you can use it to program the first one (this way you can confirm if the 328p microcontroller is still working). It's possible to replace the ch340, might be cost-effective.
