small correction, generally speaking Irish rounders and British rounders should be classed as 2 different sports. Irish rounders or GAA rounders uses a bat the length of a baseball bat(roughly) where in Britain, the bat is far shorter, and the home mat is also the mat you bat at where you don't in British there's a separate base. in Ireland we use a sliotar witch is a hard ball (a little softer and smaller than a baseball)with a raised stich, this is the traditional small ball used in Irish sports like hurling, where they use a ball more like a baseball only smaller. as someone who went from GAA rounders to softball, who also played a good bit of British rounders, these might seem small but they do have a major impact on the game

The Finnish word for the extra run scored by reaching the third base doesn't exactly mean "homerun", although it's the closest term that exists in the English baseball vocabulary. The actual Finnish term for the extra run is "kunniajuoksu", which means "honor run". Often it's shortened to "kunnari".

GAA Rounders or Irish rounders is actually more similar to baseball in that 2 hands are used on the bats and a score is a run. Bases are 82 feet apart and no stealing allowed. If your interested I'd love to have a conversation on the similarities and differences.

Germany also had a version of Lapta. It declined with WWII. And there's a German PE version of Brännboll called 'Brennball' without a bat but with a ball. If the defense brought the ball back to the middle of the field, all runners have to be on one of the 'stations' or they are 'burned'. Also, a home run in Brennball doesn't mean you have to run around to where you started. The 'goal' is usually next to the 'start'.

Thanks for the interesting video. There's also something called "Stoolball". This is played in the south-east of England since the 15th century, according to Wikipedia. It's like a missing link between cricket and baseball. The batter stands in front of a target that the pitcher is trying to hit. The batter tries to hit the ball then run. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoolball

In Ireland, rounders is under the Gaelic Athletic Association, the world's largest amateur sporting organisation. It's not one of their major sports, but it is sometimes played in Croke Park, the third largest stadium in Europe.
@yannick245
Жыл бұрын
It's actually the 5th largest. But I just love the fact that your country has it's own stadium exclusively for your national sports _(gaelic football, hurling, camogie etc.)._ I think that's something unique! Here in Germany, we don't have a national Stadium. The reason is the federalist organization of the country. Which, with the exception of the 3rd Reich, has always been the case in Germany. Only the the annual German football cup _(DFB-Pokal)_ is always played at the Olympic stadium in Berlin. Greetings from Heidelberg _Edit: A different source indicates that Crook Park is indeed the 3rd largest European stadium_
@qwertyTRiG
Жыл бұрын
@@yannick245 I think the discrepancy is because soccer stadiums don't allow standing. So by total capacity, Cooke Park is third largest, but if you count only seats it goes a bit down the list. And if the standing area is converted to seating (which it has been for some soccer and rugby games when their stadium was being renovated) it goes a little further back up the list.
@yannick245
Жыл бұрын
@@qwertyTRiG It's the same for our stadium. The Westfalenstadion _("Signal Iduna Park")_ has a capacity of 80,000 in the Bundesliga. But at Champions League matches where they don't allow standing, it goes down to only 68,000 seats. But the list I saw included the full capacity with standing sections.

There's also a French cousin of baseball called thèque. It's mostly played in outdoor centers. The number of bases is undefined : the bases can make a diamond or a pentagon. After a hit, the fielders have to drive the ball back to the pitcher. When the ball is back on the pitching spot and in the pitcher's hand, the play is over. A runner who's between two bases when the play is over is out.
@brucehartnell1475

No “ over the line”? A staple of Southern California sports. A lot like “ cork ball” but you had to make a play on the ball. It can be played with two to five players on a side, and you pitch to your own team. There’s an imaginary line about 70 feet from the hitter, and if the batted ball hits before the line and is caught by the “ infielder”, it’s a “ ground out”. If it lands “ over the line”, it’s a single. If it goes past the outfielder on the ground it’s a double, if it’s goes over the outfielder but he gets a glove on it it’s a triple, and if it goes over the putflieders head cleanly it’s a home run.

If a batter misses a swing on their third swing in pesäpallo they aren’t out immideatly instead they have a chance to run to first base although it’s really easy to throw to fist base and many times you are out, but in lower levels of pesäpallo you might make it to first if the pitcher throws a bad throw

There is another form of Stall Ball played without a wicket and pitcher. I played it at junior school and it used a Rounders / Baseball pitch. They used a wooden levered device on the ground that held the ball. The player hit the lever throwing the ball in the air and then had to hit the ball and a wooden rounders/baseball bat. The rest of the game was the same as rounders and you could be caught out in mid air or not reaching a base.

I play wiffleball and the movement I get on my riser is absolutely sick. A pitch clock would say that I'm reaching velocities of anywhere between 60 and 75 max but since the distance between the rubber and home plate (official) is 45 feet. I'm no mathematician, but I dare you to hit a riser at my slowest max speed with a skinny yellow bat. We practice in our backyards for years to win Natty's. Also, what's also common I many pro wiffleball leagues and tournaments is the ghost runner rule or as you put it 'imaginary runner'. Its a cool concept since teams are comprised of max 5 players and a minimum of 3.
