The most sought after 12 string is a Guild 612. It has a solid Rosewood back and side.Some are actually Brazilian if they are from the early 1970s. They had cut many large backs for the 612 and the F-50R. They could only be used for the large Guitars and several I bought were incredible sounding. Very hard to find.

Hi Steven, yes, I'm aware of the popularity of the Guild 12 strings, and remember Tim Buckley playing one. as you probably know Martin stopped using Brazilian in 1969. i have had two or three d12-35s, can't remember the dates now. i used to "trade" Martins back in the late '60s/70s, and probably had a few BRW guitars but we made no distinction back then.

You develop a different style strumming 12 strings , no need to always strum all 12 at once and damping with your palm intermittently . It works well for me. Play Yamaha, Eko, Eros and others for different sounds. Many thanks.

The effort it takes to press the strings against the frets greatly depends on the string gauge and scale length. Elixirs feel heavenly and are played with much ease but heavier Ernie Balls can be quite stiff and hard - especially as time goes on.

The 12-string is a truly remarkable instrument. As you described in the video, it is orchestral. I've been playing one for many years, and it is my preferred style of guitar. Like you, I find it no harder to play a 12-string than to play a 6-string. Tuning is problematic but so much as to call it a show-stopper. I have an older Alverez (dated from the mid-80s) and a newer Takamine, and I use them in settings where mine is just one of many other guitars. With the vastly broader sound, it stands out and fills in subtle nuances to what we are playing. Thank you for your time and explanation. I encourage anyone who is thinking about buying a 12-string to do so. It will provide you with a rewarding experience.

@MrPendell

I’ve also got three 12s- I’ve had a chronic and progressive case of guitar acquisition syndrome which started many years ago and branched off into an amateur luthiery hobby, so most of my acquisitions have been from pawnshops/Kijiji/Facebook marketplace etc., and have generally needed some significant TLC to make them playable again- for me that’s about 75% of the fun. My first 12 was an early 90s Indonesian Yamaha which I found in the early 00s in a pawnshop with unplayably high action from being left sitting in the window of the shop for who knows how long tuned about a half step ABOVE concert pitch. Top was pretty badly bellied, and neck relief was way out of whack, but there was enough adjustment on the truss rod to get the neck straightened, and I was able to file down the saddle to get it playable again at standard pitch with extra light strings, so no neck reset needed (which was good, because at the time I had never done one yet) and I was hooked on 12s. Next 12 was the only guitar I’ve ever owned which didn’t come to me used- a 20teens Takamine with piezo pickup. This one was actually a long service award from my employer at the time- deal was that employees at 5 year increments could pick a merchandise item up to a specific value depending on length of service from any local business which was a customer of our company, and this one at the local Long and Mcquade fit the bill. The piezo pickup meant I could take this one out for amplified jam nights. After a while, though, I found I wasn’t happy with spacing of strings- the neck was a bit wider than my old Yamaha, which I actually liked, but the paired strings were actually further apart, especially at the bridge end, which I found clumsy when trying to do anything other than strum cowboy chords. I eventually came up with a way to adjust the string spacing which didn’t require filling and re-drilling the bridge pin holes or replacing the bridge entirely, so I’m much happier with it now, but in the meantime I found what has been my favourite guitar for the past 5 years or so- an early 1990s Charvel/Jackson with piezo which I found on Kijiji while visiting relatives on Vancouver Island. The Charvel needed some contact cleaner for the sliders on the preamp, but plays like butter, stays in tune beautifully for a 12 (I can whack away at it for several hours of jamming with an ensemble, and it’s only very slightly out of tune by the end of the evening), puts up with seasonal temperature and humidity swings on the Canadian prairies, and has amazing tone both acoustic and amplified. There’s a weird sort of accordion meets pipe organ overtone (perfectly in tune, it’s not like a chorus pedal dissonance) which sometimes comes out when playing some chords, especially when amplified. It’s got a bit of a goofy looking body shape- neither a dreadnaught, nor a jumbo, nor a parlour shape, it’s more of a Breedlove looking thing, with a narrow waist and a bulbous top bout and a cutaway. Mine is beautifully appointed, though, with a nice sunburst finish and lots of sparkly abalone inlay. Bottom line, if you’re looking for a 12 string and you happen to find one of these, 10/10 would recommend.

The 1st person I ever saw play a 12-string was Bob Gibson in the early 60's. Gibson was a 5-string banjo player & played his 12 string like a banjo. I owned and played a 1960s Yamaha 12-string guitar (they were solid wood, non- laminated and made in Japan). Tuning was not as much an issue when I tuned it "looser" or a full step lower. That with a capo allowed me to take some of the stress off the neck and still play along with others without any difficulty. The Yamaha had a beautiful sound. I could play it softly without losing any of the unique sound of a 12-string. If I really got after it, it would overpower any other instrument in a band without electric guitars in it. In short, I loved it. Sadly, it was destroyed in a plane crash (which very nearly destroyed ME!), too). I opted not to replace it because I was buying old Martin and old Gibson six string guitars and a 12 would fit neither my apartment nor my discretionary budget. Great video. Thanks.

@@SillyMoustache I remember that I bought the guitar from a guy who needed tuition money for school. I had it for about 10 years, give or take. I never was certain as to when it was made. One more thing to add, I think, is that the strings tuned an octave above the lower E, A, D & G are physically located on the BOTTOM of the pair, so yes, if you pick up, you hit the higher note and then the lower note. That's one thing that gives the 12-string a unique sound. So instead of your thumb playing those lower bass notes while your other fingers are playing higher notes, your thumb is also playing two strings the first of which gives a higher, ringing, sound. Find the chords to the Eagles Hotel California (capo on the 7th fret) and play around with the picking and see what I mean.

Can't pass up $129 a/e 12 string so I bought it, tuned it a full step down and play the he'll out of it. It never stays in tune, chords never sound in tune and it's just bad. I name all my guitars and this 1 is P O S cause it is. But I play that guitar probably twice as much as my other guitars cause it's always sitting out, the tuner always on the headstock and I still love the sound of a 12 string. Amazes me how many guitarists won't play a 12 string cause they're scared. I tune each string a little sharp so as I play thing sounds a little better in tune. I drag that guitar everywhere, beach, out in front of house. Everybody hears me play P O S. Learned to pick strings better so it improved my guitar playing overall also.

You're mistaken about the origin of the 12-guitar. In days of yore, guitars were 5 double courses, (10 string). They added a sixth course, making the guitar 12-string. Then they changed the double to single strings, which is where the modern 6-string guitar came from, so the 12-string guitar is OLDER than the 6 string.

Robert Devino ....nice one 👍 Guild makes great 12 string guitars. I have a late 70’s Takamine lawsuit 12 string jumbo guitar I found in a pawn shop. Guild sued Takamine for copying them especially the headstock. The headstock reads “Takamine&Co” and shaped like a Guild headstock instead of the usual square headstock that just says Takamine. It’s actually a decent guitar for the $400 I paid. After I had my local guitar luthier do a complete set up it was like a totally different guitar and played much better. I purchased it because I figured it’s somewhat of a collectors and I’m sure I could sell it for double what I paid or could always at least get back what I paid for it anyway. That body style is great for rock n roll such as playing Led Zeppelin tunes on it. It don’t have that very warm sound like my fathers vintage dreadnought style Takamine 12 string

Having played guitar since 1962 and having a 12 string in my arsenal since 1968, I have not experienced any of the tuning issues you mention, except when using strings heavier than 10's. I played professionally from 1969 to 1982 and never had to constantly tune my 12 strings. As for the history of the 12 string, they were first offered in a catalog in 1912 by Bruno. Before this time, they were kind of a novelty item and were built, mostly, on special order. I'm glad to see someone trying to popularize the 12 string again.

I'm gonna try to help, when you say you can't strum do you mean you can't get the right sound out or you can't get the rhythm right? And are you using a pick or your nails? If you're using you're nails, let your fingers limp except your index and thumb, make your thumb and index touch a bit like you're making an 'ok' gesture, except you're not touching the very tip, you wanna have them a bit flatter. On downstrum use your index nail, on upstrum use your thumb nail. If you use a pick, it's a bit more difficult to me, actually. So hold a pick as comfortable as you can and when downstrumming angle it up a bit, and when upstrumming angle it down a bit so that the sound doesn't sound rough. If you're confused on the rhythm and strum patterns, usually people kinda learn that as they play without thinking about it too much, maybe you have bad rhythm In your right hand and you're naturally a lefty?

Wrong answer to one question. Well, the right answer but not to the question. Are the strings tuned the same as a six string? Please, help. The question means are BOTH strings tuned to the same exact same note, not is the whole guitar tuned differently? thank you. So two E, two A, two D? or are each pair slightly off each other? Remember, beginners watch this.
@SillyMoustache
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chuck, Each course is tuned with both strings tuned to the same note - normally E,A,D, G, b and e. (although most, like me, tune down one tone - D,G,C,F, a & d) However, the 1st and 2nd course (normally top E and b) are tuned in unison, and the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th courses are tuned with the uppermost string an octave higher, but still, of course, the same note. With the octave courses the uppermost string is usually much thinner. So, on my 12 strings (using either D'addario EJ37s or Martin M190 : 1st course : 12/12 9 - d/d 2nd course : 16/16 - a/a 3rd course : 25 wound)/10 - f/F 4th course : 32w/25w - c/C 5th course : 42w/22w - g/G 6th course : 54w/32w - d/D I hope that helps - but please ask me more if necessary. Thanks for our question.

In chasing down information on a 1928 William H. Bendler guitar (hand made in Baltimore, MD) I talked to Holzapfel's son who was running a luthier shop a few doors down from the Greyhound bus station in Baltimore, MD. At the time he was about 70 years old (mid-1980s) he elder Holzapfel had worked in Bendler's shop during the beginning of the 20th Century.

@@SillyMoustache Unfortunately, that was the end of the story with Holzapfel. The original Bendler shop is gone, replaced by the entrance ramp of the Jones Falls Expressway in downtown Baltimore, MD. The guitar was a parlor sized six string that I had put back together (top and back were partially separated from the sides, bridge was loose, frets were sprouting). The luthier was Chris Warner in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Functionally, it worked after that but the frets were paper thin and the tuners (brass) were worn so badly that you could only get it in turn with ultra light strings. This experience let me down the path of transferring my woodworking hobby into becoming an amateur luthier. Among my toys that I've restored are a 1890s minstrel banjo, a mandolin-banjo of the same vintage, a 1968 Hofner Bass, a 1973 Fender Jazz Bass and several other six string archtop guitars from the 1950s. The real gems in my collection is the Martin-Coupa circa 1847-1850 still with its coffin case, (I know of only two others that still exist, one in the Smithsonian Institution and one in Canada.) and my 1918 Gibson Style O archtop.

Charamambo makes Stainless Steel Wound Requinto Strings which are actually Medium Gauge Unison tuned 12 String Guitar Strings. They have a lower tension because they're designed for D Standard Tuning (same tuning you use which helps with singing the high notes without straining your voice), it's a whole step below E Standard Tuning, they do that so that it's easier to play in Accordionist friendly keys.

I’ve never owned or seriously played a 12 string before. What I’m noticing is that somehow I’m missing the octave strings with my picking hand. It seems that the high octave string is slightly lower than the “normal” string and sounds best when attacked only with a down stroke. Any advice? Is there a mod for the saddle or can I have a new saddle cut to raise up those octave strings? Have you ever heard of this complaint before? Maybe I just need to learn how to pick a 12. No matter what, for me it’s about the journey and I will eventually tame the 12 string beast. Thank you for your video. I am both loving and inspired by my new 12 string. Bonus for me is that this Guild didn’t break the bank. I was going to recommend a wonderful CD still advertised on Amazon - 'Complete Twelve String Story' - but the price being asked now by greedy affiliates isn't just stupid, it's insane and beyond unjustifiable. However, if you type that title into KZitem you'll find that most of the tracks have been uploaded separately. Click on the 'various artists' identifier for the uploader and you'll find them. Otherwise, keep scrolling to find more. It's now easy to download the audio from YT if you wanted to. Luckily I bought that CD years ago and also a book of transcriptions for most of the tracks published in 1963 titled 'The big 12 string guitar'. (Pacific Popular no.60 from Hansen Publications). That cost me just 5 old shillings!!!! My first 12 was a Levin (1962 or 3) and it was a brute! If you're interested in more old-style, folk or blues based 12 string, you may be able to find that CD and the book if you search - but, as I say, KZitem does have many of the tracks uploaded separately. Also, check out Shawn Phillip's first LP 'I'm a loner' - he plays some superb 12 string as accompaniment. If you want a few names from my own personal list of favourite 12 stringers ... search for anything by Paul Brett, his name isn't all that well known in the UK but he's one of the masters of 12 string. One of my 12s is his signature parlour-sized V880PB-12 made by Vintage. (There was an earlier version but the new model has been uprated with a much better pickup system). The guitarist who inspired my lifelong love of the 12 was Billy Strange and all of his 12 string instrumentals are still available on CD. And don't forget Glen Campbell's early 12 string instrumental LPs - some are still available on CD. Finally of course, I have to mention Gordon Giltrap and his 'Visionary' trilogy of LPs. Good set of comments and explanations here by Silly Moustache although, like raysmusic, I rarely find that I have anything more than truly minor tuning issues - especially with a Taylor 562ce which never seems to detune itself even when being moved from room to room or house to house!

Been playing my big 12 string Gibson since the sixties. It went everywhere with me. Lost count of the times I had to clean beach sand out of the tuners and yet today, she sounds and plays as smooth as she always has. Been repaired a couple of times but age, wear and tear as well as the tension of those strings does take its toll. I didn’t seem to worry much about how much it might be worth today....I didn’t buy it back then as an investment...I bought it to play. It’s funny but, I never really thought about the tuning issues. Most times, I would take her out of the case, tune her up and play for hours with just a tweak here and there. As you said, 12 strings can sound great even slightly out of tune. Thanks for the great video.

I have several 12-strings. The best one is a Hofmann, which is no longer made. It is built on the Gibson scale, which is a bit shorter than Martin, and has 14 frets to the body and is NOT a slot head(I dislike slot heads). I play with a thumb-pick and fingers or just fingers, and it responds to a light touch and does not break up when played hard. It is accurate up the neck and is easier to play than a 6. It sustains forever. It is easy to tune and it stays in tune. I discovered that it really resonates to E, so I have it tuned in “open D”, up a whole step. I use Daddario extra lights. It is the best guitar I own. Bottom line- whether a guitar is a 6 or a 12, playability and sound depend on the build, and not on the name on the headstock. Finding THE ONE may not be easy, but you will know it when it happens.

My next guitar is going to be a 12-string. Love the sound and I find it's well suited to my particular style of play (i.e. rhythm and chords). Thanks for posting.

What about swapping the placement of the octave strings. Roger McGuinn of the Byrds plays his that way. It's gives it an interesting sound.

Glad to have found this. I’ve just started playing 12 string and find it a wonderful sound. As a question, on a 6 string I cross-pick, I feel like I get both strings to ring out nicely on a down stroke with a pick, but mostly only catch the bottom string on upstrokes. This is particularly true on the basses where the diameter of the bottom string is so large it appears to hide the octave above it. Thoughts?

Personally, I try to minimise upstrokes - I believe that it is too easy to create a wall of sound - doubly so on 12 strings. As you may have noticed, I tend to the boom chick, method rather than brush-strumming, ad 12 strings sound best played , tastefully.

I have a 1977 Takamine 12-string and a Taylor 314CE 6-string. The Taylor 6-string requires more tuning than my 12-string. It does get a little out of tune when I beat the strings but not much.

All guitar strings go out of tune sometimes Jeff.

Hi folks i see so many comments regarding tuning i have many just spend 800 to 1000 on a Martin or Taylor ....i rarely tune them ....i dont believe in bending notes as my ear is not that good ....i also disagree with no strumming ...i have pieces that the harmonies start building and swirling around in a cachopony of orchestration which produces sounds unique to each time i play it which no 6 string will ever compete with ....i picked one up in 1996 because of Rodger Hogson my 12 string hero ...i have never talked to a 6 string since 😂

Hi, I don't think guitars go uot of tune ... strings do, subject to external forces, like temperature, humidity (which, OK affect the guitars) and the interference of humans pressing down and picking the poor strings!

I bought a 12string Eko Ranger guitar from Minns Music in 1968, it was good to play but it was leaning against a Triumph Herald and the guy started the triumph and as he drove away, not noticing the guitar he drove over the instrument and snapped the nut off! I glued it back on as it was a clean break with Evostik Resin W and I have still got it but rarely play it as compared to my Yamaha Jumbo from 1980, it resembles a cheese grater for my finger ends! Lovely sound and as you say, powerful but they must be slightly out of tune for that 'jangle' of notes. Thank you for your short video.

Does your Matin guitar have Brazilian rosewood back and side? It sounds very nice. I have a Taylor 652ce builder’s edition which has Maple back and sides. Yours has more sustaining than mine.

Hi, no my Martin 12 string has mahogany B&S. It is/was a '64 D12-20, which was rebuilt by Martin in 1998, and given a D12-35 trim. No-one knows why.

I tune my ovation 12 string a whole step down for a couple different reasons Number one I like the tone of a whole step down number 2 it releaves a lot of tension off of the saddle and bridge.. I also have a Godin A12 Which is magnificent great action intonation is spot on I can do standard tuning and it is still very easy to play... Just my basic 2 cents..

Hi, I rarely go out with just a 12 string, and if I'm doing a set, I'll use the 12 every 2-4 songs and tunined one tone/step down gives me a different sound dynamic for my audience. Thanks for watching.

A little late to this conversation, but to add something I've been doing for years now with my unison strings. I'll tune the top unison string to pitch, then tune the bottom one just a little sharp. This gives a "chorus" effect to the sound, or more shimmer.

I don't mind constant tuning. But I do play a style of 6 string guitar that emulates a 12 string guitar. It's all in the math and the player. I would rather not constantly tune to get a decent variation of 12 string sounds on a six string.

I live in the UK and I have two 12 strings - a 1964 Martin D-12-20 (rebuilt in 1998) and a Harmony H1270 of similar vintage, also rebuilt at some stage, so just the two.

Very good! I never thought about changing to a 12 String, for a song or two, them back to my six string for 6-8 songs. This would change the sound and keep the gig fresh! Good idea! Thanks for your time! Marty Cann

Great video! I have an old German Framus 12 string and the back of the bridge keeps raising from the tension throwing it out of tune. In your opinion which would be better at fixing this, two screw and bolts in the bridge or a tail piece? Or any other ideas?
@SillyMoustache

Hi Gregory, I would suggest that you take it to a good luthier and have the bridge removed, cleaned and re-glued.
