I would bring a head gasket tester to see if your head gasket is good. Turn the AC on and the fans should come on ( two if you have two ) and run it at operating temp. Check the fans again they should be running and blowing hot air and not cool air. Also check brake pedal pad wear.. If you do not see any pad wear on the right bottom of the pedal then most of those miles on the car were highway miles.

In addition to those 12 amazing tips here are my 5 cents.... Check under the vehicle for extreme corrosion, chances are that the car was sitting near the sea and salt air would have damage parts under it. When the car is turned on put a white cloth close to the tailpipe of the exhaust for about 5 seconds, If you get bits of oil on it that will tell you that the rings of the engine are worn out and it will need an engine overhaul soon. Some people say that if the milage is at 200K, it will need overhaul soon. Look around the engine for oil leaks, if there are any, simply don't buy it.

Also another good tip, look at the car brakes. The rubber cover over the break is thick, so if you can see the metal part on the brake, then that means the car had been driven A LOT and for a long time. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad car but it is something to consider

I laid on the floor and looked under the car...I noticed some overspray on the front bumper. After many questions from me, the dealer came clean and said the radiator was replaced. I keep probing because the car made a weird noise when shifting from Park to drive... It was obviously in a front end collision. They almost got me! Also, run your fingers on all the edges of the panels, if it's rough, it was likely repainted by a body shop.

That was Chris Fix I believe and it was OBD II reader, just like this guy had but used a smart phone to get results. If you don't have an OBD II reader, most people don't then just hope or take it to a shop before buying. I never thought about taking an OBD II reader and probably still would not. Good tool to have to used when you take you car in....or just re-set the codes in case the error was a fluke.

Another good thing to look at are the filler caps for the oil and the coolant. The oil filler cap is normally located atop of the valve cover. The coolant caps are typically located directly atop the radiator. Take each one off and inspect the bottoms of the caps. Someone selling a vehicle with blown cylinder heads or bad gaskets, will change fluids but will almost certainly forget to clean off the evidence from the bottom of the caps.

@richardwarren7492

@@DCSPORTSTER Actually, you can still check the fluid, just not with a dipstick. You can always disconnect a cooling line at the radiator, or simply climb underneath and check it. Yep it's a pain but it's not that tough. The diagnostic tester just will show the level. Or, you can pay to have it checked. The color of the fluid may or may not tell you what might be going on inside. And just a small hint: Transmission dipsticks are slowly becoming a thing of the past.

If you can, jack up at least one side and push the wheel side to side with both hands and if it rocks back and forth it then it’s a bearing and/or ball joint, tie rod end, linkage. It's also important to look underneath the car and check the condition of its chassis. Make sure its strong and not showing signs of rotting.

This is the best descriptive information I have come across on youtube regarding what one has to look out for before buying a car! Thank you so much for this it really helped. I never knew that smelling the engine oil makes a difference but that is something I will definitely be looking into!

Thanks for making this video. These days there are too many things that can go wrong with cars. My first car was a '78 Corolla. That took five minutes to check, because it was really basic. I could fully service it myself, including the brakes, and it never broke down in the many years I kept it. I remember timing myself to rotate all five tyres. I was able to do a full rotation, including the spare, in less than twenty minutes.

And one more thing I just learned the hard way, have your mechanic check the frame for rust even if the car was just safetied a year ago.

Check your coolant for any bits in it that look like reflective rusty flakes before turning on. Could be a sign of a coolant issue they tried to fix. Learnt that one the hard way and an easy easy check.

Make sure the vin on the car matches the vin on the previous registration or title. Someone got me with that not to long ago, but if I had just watched this video first I never would have bought it in the first place.

Unscrew the oil filler cap and check underneath the cap itself for white (milky) gunge. This is a sign of water getting in, possible oil leak or head gasket issue.

Get the car to operating temp before you test drive it and look out for blue smoke and sort of smoke from exhaust. And make sure you go in with a obd tool

Some OBDII connectors are not under the dash.Some maybe in the glovebox or under the ashtray.Do your research on the engines too.The GM 3.6 is one example,you run away from.Timing chain problems which starts with a cam/crank code which is over a grand job to replace the timing chains in.Bottom end problems.Take the car to a mechanic having it inspected as well.

I like to bring a flashlight and piece of cardboard. I looked under the car and saw paint overspray (red, same as car) on the fuel tank. Led me to believe it was rear ended. I politely said "Sorry, this is not what I'm looking for" and left.

@@V3V0.2M The car was red. The fuel tank was black. There was red paint overspray on the tank. Telling me the rear end of the car had been repaired, parts replaced, then repainted. I don't want to say it was a shoddy repair job, but it's a sign of poor workmanship.
