I love seeing you two do shows together. Absolutely. I was a little nervous when you said "How to not look like a 1980's corporate man....". Because when I dressed my brothers for a wedding in the late 1990s, a cousin told us we all looked like bankers. I think that was his vocabulary because he didn't how else to word it. Especially with the ties I chose for my brothers. Thankfully, I think my look is perfectly current for today's sartorial fashion standards. Maybe always there. But it came from a place of practicality and not style. My first MTO shoes I bought last year I specified with a double-rubber sole. For a penny loafer. Not only do I love this style loafer, but I walk a lot here in New York City. And it's for casual wear which fits with anything in that genre. And the shoes I'm buying now have somewhat thicker soles because of the walking which have been derby shoes/boots. And the thicker soles look fine on derbies. Maybe perfect. Separates. Knitwear. Vests. All check-marked. Mostly, because it gets cold in NYC but I don't want to wear an overcoat or maybe in addition to one. Again, very practical. But the first time I saw that was in the 1989 Batman movie. I saw Michael Keaton wearing a suit with a sweater underneath the jacket and thought that looked good. Lastly... The Man Bag. Gosh, I've had one since the 1990s. I bought it solely for practical reasons: I didn't like the look of a wallet in my back pocket and I just started carrying too many things that I needed. If I had a jacket with half-dozen pocket, that would technically work. But that looks so bad. And having a big wallet in your back pocket can cause back problems. Seriously. It's a known issue. I took a decent amount of heat for having a man bag in the 1990s. But no so much anymore. My first was an Armani that I had for about 15 years. It was made of nylon and when that finally aged, I got a gorgeous Il Bisonte bag. Looks good with anything I wear it with. Thanks for the helpful video!

I think the "banker" look is when it is too uniform. Too much of a suit that once was 3 piece but now is a 2 piece. To not look like a banker is to have your own flare, something that shows your own interests and personality. Not garish, but not a text book workplace dress code.

The first step in my sartorial journey happened to be my glasses and to your point, glasses can make a statement or can provide that signature look. I spent a lot of money over the years on various brands, Chrome Hearts, Blinde, Paul Smith and Oliver Peoples to name a few. What I discovered was the less expensive frames today can be just as elegant or striking as you simply have to look diligently to find that diamond in the ruff. Like anything you wear even glasses, a good fit is a priority.

Great tips, thanks for sharing. My last pair of glasses were definitely an upgrade. Not bespoke but a nice natural buffalo horn. One general comment. I believe that today, men who are wearing suits, unless they truly must, such as traditional Swiss banking, are doing so because they want to, not need to. As a result, there are much more interesting looks and many of these tips are being used. By the way, thanks for listing the IG accounts, and keep up the great work! Cheers from Zurich.

Rubber soles, in addition to being more comfortable and durable, also feel more solid, tactile and satisfyingly heavy. Just like the thud or thunk of closings of doors and lids on a Lexus, which I highly recommend to you and Sonya. And the icing on the cake, supremely, rubber soles are medically friendly and, in many cases, medically necessary. This is particularly swell for diabetics, who would otherwise be deprived of the privilege of wearing such fine shoes.

Dress shoes with a rubber sole make sense for autumn and winter in rain a snow in the city. But the shown Vibram sole is for trekking and not for use in the city. And when I trek, I do not need a dress shoe as I do not need a suit. The trekking sole on a dress shoe is not at all aesthetic appealing. For autumn and winter, I have had my bespoke shoe maker make me a pair of shoes with room for thicker and warmer socks and a stormwelted sole with a rubber sole with minor patterns useful in rain and snow in the city. It looks nice with a winter suit and is very useful on slippery pavements.

The Silicon Valley look of dressing down came from wearing lab coats or what one wore underneath the lab coats, whereas the money people (the contemptible bankers and lawyers) wore suits. The lab coats were proper for the semiconductor industry, which then split off the electronics hardware industry (with a similar dislike of wearing “monkey suits”). The software industry kept the prejudices of the hardware and semiconductor industries despite not being exposed to the clothes-damaging effects of reagents or soldering irons.

Hugo and Sonya, questions: (1) re: a cap, do you have a feeling for the plastic band in back vs. a full cap that is sized to fit your head? How do you feel about 'Newsboy caps' (aka: The Great Gatsby type of cap)? (2) I loathe seeing men wearing beautiful suits and expensive shoes with no socks! What's with that look? (3) Re: a man-purse, do you see it more in Europe or are men in America starting to carry them? If so, is it a coastal thing (NYC, LA, etc.)? I live in the Upper Midwest and its perception is that it's a bit effeminate (or dare I say gay). Thanks.

One tip I would have which isn't on this list, which is probably more applicable to English tailoring, is to look at less traditional colours. Something I've been wearing much more of recently is a suit made from Alfred Brown British wool in a kind of brown/charcoal Prince of Wales Check. Certainly don't look like a banker in that as British bankers famously do not wear 'brown in town'. That said, would certainly be an abomination to try and layer that with a polo or jumper in my opinion as its such a British cut suit, in a very British pattern.

I generally agree. I wouldn't wear one outside of playing sports and certainly not with a jacket or suit. That said, there are environments and occasions (probably unique to Canada and the states) where it could be appropriate.

I really like your channel! But baseball caps? Navajo patterns for sweaters? What it’s gonna be next? White sneakers with distressed jeans? 3 pieces Suit with running shoes? Sorry but not for me. But I understand that you guys are trying to expand your audience, maybe?

Personally don't agree with the cap comment. Think it's very American as a point of view. In the UK, caps have quite a working class 'peaky blinders' connotation which clashes with suiting. Same for the thick lugged dress shoes, I do prefer thin rubber soles for most purposes as the UK rains a lot (though I do have leather soled shoes in my collection) but I prefer thinner rubber oversoles ontop of leather. I think some of these tips also work only with the right kind of suit, ideally Italian cuts. A polo shirt under the kind of heavier wool and more structured English made suits I wear would look very odd.

That shoe looks like one of my work boots. It looks like I could wear it in my Auto shop. Which begs the question. A Louis the 14th desk never goes out of style. So what here is style and what's just a fad?

I wonder if I'm missing the point of this channel, (Which I enjoy tremendously!) but I have a question/request. First off assuming that elegance is a spectrum and situational, and also that a suit and or a blazer, sports jacket and slack/chino combination is not always the appropriate outfit (or is it!?) , can we have some discussion a elegant dressing, in casual situations? Some of us may not be ready to present as eccentric (as fun as that might be!) I am curious about the the "old money" or "quiet luxury" movements and whether this may be an onramp up the sartorial ladder.

You can let upgrade a leather sole by using a thin slice of rubber. No need to buy any shoes with that ugly massive rubber sole. That looks just cheap.
@SARTORIALTALKS
7 ай бұрын
I strongly disagree with you Alice: the thin slice of rubber (we call them "half rubber soles") you're talking about, if not properly incrusted in the sole by a bona fide cobbler, can and will ruin your leather soles (which will crack and become dry). This is a wide spread misbelief. On the other hand, some rubber soles can almost be unnoticed (they are not always massive and ugly). Of course I also prefer, by far, my leather soles (without any rubber added) but I can understand it's a great entry door to real shoes for many gentlemen. All my best, Hugo

A men's leather bag should have some "roughness" to it. Like extra pockets, adjustable straps, a patina. Too smooth, too simple, and too shiny a design does look feminine. I have greatly enjoyed solo Sonya videos like the ones she has done on hats. It is rare for a woman to do men's style that actually focuses on men. There is a female KZitemr that talks about men's style but it is always with a woman's eye so to speak, more like "How your woman wants you to look". In the men's style world, we often say, "Don't let your woman dress you." I'd throw out this rule when it comes to Sonya, she really knows her stuff!
