I worked as a consultant to Shell in the 1980s and that was my 'road to Damascus' moment followed by a visit to the alternative energy centre in mid Wales. Since then I have worked on truly affordable zero carbon buildings with no embodied energy. The battles I have had with ignorant planners and greedy developers is staggering. I now live in Scotland because of the corruption in England.

I enjoyed every second of your diatribe with its gems of wisdom, Robert. Never give up, never despair. Your attitude is the correct and wise attitude. Attitude change is generational. When habits and attitudes get set as a person gets older they often die before they can change those attitudes. Accepting the change from petrol/diesel to electric may take a generation. I bought a second hand 2013 LEAF earlier this year. Best smartest move I've made in many years. Took possession weeks before the petrol price hike. LOL And the captains of industry, who one would hope are more insightful and intelligent, are the worst. They are motivated by greed to maintain the status quo. That is disappointing. Because one would also think they are smart enough to see the opportunities inherent in a new field such as electric power, electric cars, but no, they deny neon lite facts to protect the money stream that they have gorged on for a lifetime. I hope they choke on it.

I find it fascinating how some kinds of radical change seem self propelled (eg the rapid adoption of smart phones) whereas some feel like trench warfare in spite of the actual benefits. It’s not cost. Smartphones were always more expensive than the technology they displaced but the benefit case was overwhelming. We don’t even use smartphones as phones all that much. The difference with EVs, solar, wind, etc… is almost entirely down to two things: First, public unfamiliarity with the idea of total cost of ownership vs up-front price (businesses ‘get’ that). Second, disinformation by the incumbents. It’s that latter factor that’s the biggest obstacle and it feels similar to the rearguard action fought by tobacco companies for decades. In fact I think the fossil industry push back is worse because the investment in fossil production is so wide and the prospect of change means leaving someone holding eventually worthless assets.
@theunknownunknowns5168

Robert don't forget privately owned electric vehicles are key to funding and advancing the technology for the transition away from fossil fuels. Individual ownership is a small price to pay to kill the fossil fuel industry. Car share is a important but a lower priority.

Replacing all the existing cars with EVs isn't a solution to any environmental problems. EVs are still massively resource intensive. No credible plans for dealing with the climate and ecological emergency includes making a billion electric cars. Car sharing is an excellent plan as far as it can be made practicable.

From 'The Spectator' (don't laugh): Robert Steinberger-Wickens is the University of Birmingham's professor in fuel cells and hydrogen research......for sub 150-mile journets he thinks battery electrics have the edge efficiency-wise over fuel cell cars. But in a hydgrogen can you can at least drive from London to Manchester without stopping 'for hours to charge'. The professor sees a grim future of electric car batteries going 'phut' thanks to repeated fast charges ('its simple physics'), forest of charging posts and an electricity grid wilting as it serves legions of cars plugged into them. If this is the level of analytical thinking typical of professors, then I weep for academe in this country.

As always I find your words comforting. I agree with each and every one of them. Although it is frustrating to see such a large part of the population in the fossilised world of "traditional" fuels, it is encouraging to hear a very intelligent nephew of mine declaring that he wants to study energy and environmental engineering. He watches the fully charged show. Things are changing, cars and cities are no longer compatible. There is no room left and it makes no sense energetically to move such weight so slowly and then leave it in a cramped place for a long time. Smart people will lead the way and others will follow as soon as they read the bottom line. Saving money and time is something nobody ignores. You have inspired change for so many over these 12 years. Be aware of it. May these be words of encouragement in times of despair, what you have done with your amazing team is simply fantastic. You have spread data and information, reviewed and questioned incessantly in the face of adversaries much wealthier and politically connected than yourself. Your followers have increased and your content is better than ever. I still haven't been to one of your shows, but it's on my to do list. Keep up the amazing work. Last but not least. Recently state incentives have allowed people like me to install solar + battery + heat pump. What you preach is based on facts. We now have more energy than what we can use, with air con on and two fridges. In hot Italy. Having an e-bike has now made me a photon cyclist. And everything is so much lighter. I am no longer a sponsor of war. Thanks Robert. From the heart. You were the one who literally showed me it was possible.

Ah Robert I *did* enjoy that! Well done for getting everything said that you wanted to without going off the deep end too much. 😁How you resisted the alliterative expletive at the end was remarkable 😆😂 I'm about the same vintage as you and only really properly discovered KZitem in the first lockdown when I was researching e-bikes to help me get about for some exercise and fresh air. I believe you happened to have an episode on them around the same time. Either that or it popped up thanks to the algorithm. As a consequence of course I started watching more and more of your programmes and just so wished I'd discovered you sooner. Well I'd already discovered you, in fact I was delighted to see one of my favourite actor/programme hosts speeding along on e-bikes with some chaps in London. If I had discovered you doing Fully Charged, I mean, we would already be driving an ev but sadly now have to wait a further couple of years. I use the e-bike for all but one of my journeys now so it really is my Stealth Mobility Vehicle and my car usage is minimal, my wife does the bulk of the driving to visit her mum and get to work two days a week. In our local town, Faversham, they've set up a car sharing scheme, unfortunately they were a bit apprehensive about how people would take to all-electric so they've started with hybrids with a view to getting an ev later, I believe. As I mentioned we have an elderly relative who lives a drive away so losing the car altogether is not possible and as you say, it's quite difficult to contemplate. Losing the ability to be spontaneous is what is difficult especially in an unforseen emergency. Any way, rambling! Cheers Robert for another thoroughly enjoyable contemplative contribution. 👍 😊

One thing to consider is people's personal attitudes towards sharing. Personally, I have never liked it. Always trying to plan your work day around the whole gang starting and finishing at the same time etc. I like the felxibility of being able to knock off early, if I so choose, without letting the share team down. Also, I like solitude whilst commuting, prior to spending all day in an office with people I "have" to get along with. Call me grumpy, call me anti-social. My car, my music, my thoughts without interruption etc.

Congratulations on 12 years Robert! I've been incredibly impressed with the changes in your channel and your willingness to walk your talk on energy. You have a lot of credibility and are willing to tackle very complicated issues. It is sometimes said that "change happens one funeral at a time" but I hope that the older generation will swing around on things like electric vehicles and heat pumps. I have seen some signs of our highly experienced generation accepting the change. The younger generations seem to be mostly on board with a lower carbon lifestyle (but not all of them - around here lifted trucks are common). I'm definitely seeing more EVs in my very right wing area of the USA. A new fueling station being built here has charging stations already installed. A Subway fast food place was built two years ago and has a level 2 charger. Any sign of progress here is welcome.

Thanks Robert, I appreciate your frustration, many great comments. I too am very frustrated here in Canada. We are fortunate to have a 2018 Chevy Volt (Yes I know doesn’t make the grade being a phev not a full EV) but we are able to travel 90% of the time on home charged electricity. You need to highlight the awful ev delivery problem in the US and in particular Canada. I was told this week all order books closed for 2022, probably a 3 year wait for an Ioniq 5 here in Ontario, Canada. Most EV manufacturers are the same (except high priced luxury ev’s) with most product going to Europe or areas that have high government incentives or mandates for car manufacturers. I’m told this is just a ‘temporary situation’ but I fear its just another ploy to prolong the sales of ice cars as there is more profit in selling them.

Think I have a clue to those, err... "mature" male golfers" opinions. They've taken to electric golf carts in their later years and believe that EVs are not "real cars." No indeed. If the definition of a "real car" is a polluting to death fossil fuelled vehicle, then yes, they're not. They're way better. It does happen in other walks of life though. I belong to the Ramblers Association [it's in the name], and only the other week a member looked at my ID.3 and announced, "this climate change thing is all a load of b£%&£%s isn't it." [note lack of question mark - he was sure]. I answered, "what brings you to that opinion?" "Well, it just is, isn't it", he said. "So you have a gut feeling about this?", I enquired. "Yeah, it's all tosh", he said. "Damned inconvenient tosh", I said. He nodded. "Well, I have data", I said. "I have nearly 40 years of it, from various reputable sources, including oil company scientists, and I have been convinced since around 1989 that we are destroying our habitats [not the planet, it'll be fine, thank you for the clarification, Robert] and all the reputable scientists agree on it." Octopus are clearly motivated in favour of the energy transition and love to help. Our heat pump keeps us toasty, runs on 100% renewable energy (via Octopus) and saves us cash.

Please don't compare me to a Chinese paddy field worker whose main source of transport is an ox pulling a cart. For that person merely owning their own cart and ox might be viewed as being extravagant. For me living in England owning my own car IS considered being normal. As a normal person i have a wish list of cars that i'd like, most of which will remain just a 'wish' as i'll never be able to afford them. I now have another wish list of electric cars. ALL of which are not affordable to me at the moment. THAT is why many people view electric cars as being status symbols only owned by the rich. Until they ARE available 5th or 6th hand, we 'normal' people won't be able to buy them.

Your reasoning you gave us for all your energy management choices so EXACTLY matches mine. I stopped using Gas and Petrol for the same reason and while the payback time of the Solar PV, Powerwall battery, and A/S heat pump, and full BEV vehicle were all good to know but not the reason for adopting them. I really wanted to say with confidence if I can go 100% renewably powered in my average 3 bed semi, then so can millions of others. Also my monthly expenditure on energy has been effectively future-proofed in my retirement (currently £10 per month averaged out over the year, including FIT and RHI payments.)

I charged up at Tesla Uxbridge yesterday with my e-golf. 12 working chargers. None of them broken would you believe. I checked BP Polar network and mostly all of them in that area were down. And now I’m thinking of buying a Tesla or at least a VTGrid model at some stage. I did some rough maths the other day on how much it costs to do a run into London with say a MPV. I spent about £9 for the downward leg and £0 when I got back to recharge. I don’t have any servicing costs and regularly pick up free juice around town. So, even though lecky costs have gone up recently, I’m still quids in. When the pump prices top £2.50 per litre, the penny will drop and everyone will want an EV. I’m so glad I switched four years ago, thanks to you Bobby.

I've been having conversations with my friends, and they are all feeling the hard pinch with rapidly rising fuel prices. They want to get an electric car, but the trouble is that electric car prices are also rising rapidly. You're trading one unaffordable thing for another somewhat less unaffordable thing. Either way, it's still unaffordable! So what's the solution? It turns out that e-mopeds are a thing. So I've paid attention to e-bikes for a few years now. They are expensive compared to regular bikes. But e-mopeds are surprisingly not much more expensive than e-bikes. You can get one that travels at 50mph with a 60ish mile range for just over £3k. Yes you need MOT, insurance, motorbike license etc...., but still: It gets you, and a little bit of your stuff, to 80% of your regular destinations, and you can remove the battery and charge up inside. So this is getting the attention of my friends, who previously weren't at all geeky about such things. The future of electric mobility is evidently on two wheels rather than four!
@andymccabe6712
2 жыл бұрын
Remember, also, that the electricity with which you charge your unaffordable EV is ALSO becoming unaffordable....! What we need is some form of, say, renewable energy to make our electricity with. Like, I dunno, wind maybe. Or sun, or water.?! That would make our electricity cheaper, wouldn't it...?
@anthonydyer3939
2 жыл бұрын
@@andymccabe6712 yes, and home solar is supplying 70% of my annual domestic electricity and ground transportation consumption. Despite that, I’m still exporting large quantities of surplus electricity during the spring, summer and early autumn. So, the long term problem is going to turn out to be “we’re making too much electricity, make it cheap so someone will use it”. That’s a nice problem to solve!

Mostly good. But while Robert's rants may keep Robert fans entertained, they're not helpful reference material when you're trying to persuade a reactionary anti-EV, anti-renewables relative not to keep clinging to and spouting the rubbish they do! Ranting on about other people being "angry" doesn't cut any ice with them. 😄 The "car sharing" rationale needs to be better thought through. The same logic applied to "home sharing" would be that "Private homes have to be Council Taxed, fuelled, TV licensed, stocked with food, and maintained at some expense, but most owners are out or away a lot of the time. Other people could be living there in the meantime." Sharing can undoubtedly suit many people as an alternative to private ownership or public transport. But those who prefer to own a car for the convenience of having one immediately available when the situation demands shouldn't be dismissed as "male golf players" (whatever that was all about). A more persuasive and moral argument could be made for households not owing more cars (or homes!) than they actually need.

I am incredulous at the Government's ability to pay out 150 billion on price capping, however their failure to provide similar funds in proactive ventures like renewable energy and insulation. Imagine what could be done with such a figure. I understood that policies were meant to be 'sustainable'. Sustainable being that they should not be at the detriment of the next generation. Investing 150 billion in insulation and renewable technology would be 'sustainable' but paying bills by borrowing money is most definitely not. I am writing to my conservative MP to tell him. Robert, I dispair, what can we do collectively to tell those who govern that their thinking is not in line with sustainability?

Robert I love you to bits, but we all don't live next to a bus stop, or any sort of public transport or near a town to get a hire car, so just like yourself we have a to have a car on hand for those times we need one. On the plus side, you managed to persuade me to purchase an EV, originally a Nissan Leaf 5 years ago and now a Tesla,(he says with a massive grin on his face), so thanks for the rants about OWNING an EV 😱 but we don't all have the ability to hire an EV at a drop of an hat for that run down to the shops, when you and your neighbours have run out of sugar. I hope the blood pressure is returning to normal levels after that massive, massive rant 🤬. Keep up the good fight, when it comes to the final showdown, I'll be there 😜

Well said Robert, I could not agree more. It is only through innovation that we can sustain our species. Solving the problems ie, charging from a Terraced house is only one of the many that may inhibit the uptake of electric vehicles. Installing pv’s and batteries is another. It will be through innovation and development that such problems will be over come.

On the point, Robert! Another issue: Why are so many programs presenting new EV are focusing on constant calculation on range. So much calculations. I think people are skared that they will have to spend there trips counting and calculating all there trips in the future.

We engineers don't love insurmountable problems, because we can't overcome the limits of physics: but really hard problems with attractive solutions or alternatives (plus the time and support to approach them in creative ways)... yes please!

Wonderfully well written and beautifully said, Robert! Congrats on 12 years and here's to the next twelve! Could you post the link to your TV show about the oil refinery, or could someone tell me what to search for to find it?

IMO everyone who can possibly have a car will when they have the money and if they can park it. You want certainty because it lets you plan. Public transport takes ages when you're waiting at each change from one route to another and is exhausting. I am very delighted not to have to rely on it anymore. I probably fit into the pidgeonhole of "old white male twit" but FWIW I feel less optimistic about how young people will put up with things willingly that I don't enjoy.

I am hard pressed to define the nature of a rant, but since you refer to it as such, so be it. These are important and useful. The non-stop trolling, fractiousness, bought and paid for lying by politicians and the media wears us down over time. Your work becomes a kind of energizing sermon from the currently small bully pulpit of the human race recognizing it now needs to grow up. You have made it humbly clear that no grand plan was at work, yet you have become one of the few thought leaders in this, our current reformation. Going well beyond your own personal choices - in my opinion, well done.

As ever, great knowledge to counter the myths that are perpetuated in the media, I often debate, with my engineering students about the future & the knowledge I gain from fully charged, really helps me get these young minds to question the "facts" and explore the energy transition with their eye wide open. I hope these engineers of the future will join companies that truly embrace sustainability. Thank you Robert for providing me with more facts.

From what i've read online, not all houses are compatible with heat pumps. Is that NOT the case Rob? Do they work better in Sweden due to the bigger temperature difference between in the ground and the air temp?

As a Kiwi I find the whole heat pump business very puzzling because we have had them here for decades. They obviously work and they are very efficient. I honestly thought everyone used them these days.

Good podcast Robert, but I think you’re being ageist, which is ironic. In my opinion, it’s not just our age group who are resistant to change, and I don’t like to see it portrayed as such. There are plenty of youngsters who are also resistant to change. Secondly, I would love to see a total supply chain chart for petrol which shows the energy inputs at each stage. I suspect we put multiples more energy into it than we get out in useful ‘work’.

You think it’s a snippy and impertinent comment to your friend, but think of the source. It isn’t a thought generated by the speaker, it’s the repetition of an idea purveyed over and over again by the fud fossil energy media. Your kindly elderly friend should be somewhat aware of speaking without thinking. It’s not always our fault for speaking rudely, we all will get tired of hearing what we think is wrong and we can’t be better than of our peers.

I should really stop reading Twitter. A tweet from a particular UK voice (who I won't name) expressed a negative opinion of electrification recently that was intensely politicised. The nature of the move to electrification seems to be tied up in culture politics and (very possible) undue influence from businesses that have very opposite interests in the benefits of renewables.

One of the issues presently with car sharing is the cost of hiring cars. We've been doing that for a few years now; cycling and busing around town, hiring a car for intercity trips and holidays. But honestly, the price of these cars is just not worth it, and if you should want an EV, assuming you are even able to find one, then the price is just ridiculous.

Hi Robert, I am Support Engineer in the Automotive Industry, I can tell you that our industry is now changing at a meteoric rate and I for one am very happy to see this and be part of the process. For years I have been waiting for this to happen and now it is, so your rants are well justified and those of us in my industry that look to change as a catalyst to a better future fully support the rants :)
