First-hand experience: Driving my mom’s early 1960s Chryslers in my mid-teens, none of them were “letter” cars but they’d all top 120 mph. The only problem was, you had only one chance to get them slowed down. The drum brakes would fade to near zero after a single major deceleration. This was the norm for that era.

Very few of these were made. I believe this is the optional 400hp variant of the 413, with the Pont-A-Mousoon 4-speed. I also believe Richard Petty owns one of these.

This ultra-rare (15 built) 1960 Chrysler 300-F GT was equipped with a near-race-spec 413 cross-ram V8 that gave 400 naturally-aspirated horsepower, sufficient to propel this heavy (4400 lb) coupe, its unique “boomerang” fins wind-tunnel optimized for stability, to 150 mph. Given the once-in-a-career opportunity to live out their alter egos as builders of moonshine delivery vehicles, Chrysler engineers had in their cross-hairs Europe’s most exotic GTs, the battleground Germany’s unlimited autobahns, where a four-speed, manually shifted transmission gave the big Chrysler a 20-mph top speed advantage.

Neat car. I had an automatic, VIN 8403133155, it is now residing in Boston. I always found it interesting that racer Andy Granatelli reached 189.99 mph at Bonneville with a twin Paxton supercharged 300F. I know I had mine up to where the speedo wavered around 145. The 413 had been bored out to 426 and the heads were ported and larger exhaust valves installed. The late George Riehl did the transmission and heads. I surely miss that car.

These handle and drive really nice and stable at high speed... Drum brakes are good, they stop fine, as this has power drum brakes the bad ones are none power drums...You can slam on the brakes at 125 mph and stop fine and do it 3 times before brake fade... As for seat belts, you can add them in by using mid 60's Chrysler belts as they would look period correct... I drive many old Chrysler/ Mopar cars and when they are in perfect condition, no worries its the same as a new car doing the same speed...Remember Chrysler's are not like GM/Ford products of that era, those are floaty and cant be driven around corners Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth's can be driven fast/hard and drive flat around corners...Ford/GM will scrape the door handles around corners...they are reliable ,powerful and stable at high speeds and stop good..

my pops went from 3 years 300D ownership to a new 62 Bonneville that he ordered. 389 3x2bl heavy duty suspension 8lugs etc etc. He said that widetrack Pontiac was a BAD JOKE compared to a 300. Lol, it was up for sell 6 months after taking delivery. He tried everything from new Corvettes to new Cadillacs trying to find a car that could match the 300Ds driving experience. He never found another car that came remotely close. So he tracked his 300D back down in the early 70s and bought it back. Even my mom fondly laments about her years driving the 300D. She was a looker back in the day and her boyfriends let her drive a number of very rare new hi performance 50s cars. Shes never driven an equal to that 300 in her opinion.

Our '62 300 had an under dash a/c & was fast. our '56 Plymouth Suburban 2 dr wagon "a southern special" no radio no power v8 with "3 on a tree" It had a small 200ci + hemi. when that engine died after 100.00 miles of high speed driving . dad took a 415 hp 392 out of a brand net wrecked Tenn. highway patrol car to replace org. engine. the speedo was replaced with a 150 mph one. I have been sitting behind him (my favorite spot so I could watch the gauges as he drove As one comment said mother would be sitting there screaming as the speedo climbed over the century mark. (1 day as the speedo ran out of #'s (showing 150) I made a comment & he said that he was'ant out of petal yet & car was still pulling hard. A teen never forgets the first time he knowingly travels over 150 mph

The Plymouth you had wasn't a Hemi....277 187 or so h.p if you had duel exhaust and a 4bbl it was 200 hp..Not a Hemi.. You didn't have a Hemi in your Plymouth's original engine..no, no, no, no !! I went over 150 mph in my Uncle's 58 Plymouth Fury 350 Big Block Factory Duel 4 barrels Golden Commando !! We timed it to a 5.6 0-60 and 13.80 in the 1/4 mile with lots of tire spinning too !! He went to the track and ran a 13.79 @104 mph with the so called slicks of the day that were very skinny lol.. 350 big block was a 1 year option in 1959 it was a 361 Big Block thats a 361 not a 360 small blaock ..And not a Hemi but a Wedge..

@oliasofsunhillow7116
5 жыл бұрын
Chrysler supplied Facel Vega with their 383 engine and Pont-a-Mousson supplied Facel Vega with their 4 speed transmission, and also they supplied Chrysler with their 4 speed transmission for the 300F Special in 1960! Only several were built and only 4? are known to still exist, or something like that! They used the shorter ram, 15 inch, intakes when mated with the 4 speed, I think, as opposed to the 30 inch long rams on the rest of the 300's between 1957 and 1965, if I remember correctly!

No. Nearest thing would be the "Flying Mile" held on the Daytona sand in early 1960. Chrysler built 6 Specials for that event only and I think they took the top 6 places, with the winner clocking in the mid 140s. Another 3 or possibly 4 were built and sold to the public. The car in this thread is one of those 3 or 4...the last one built. Delivered in late May of 1960 in Nevada, where it ran for over 100,000 miles in the next 3 years, mostly on 2 lane highways....running at around 105 when most traffic was about 70. Nevada had no speed limits then.

Could never figure why someone would not want a radio. What was an AM radio back then? 10 dollars? Put it in don't listen to it. Save it for the guy who buys the car used. Most people back then would shy away from the car used because it had no radio.
@TheItsmegp46
9 жыл бұрын
+Bill Taylor I agree 100%. It did cost more than $10 probably closer to $100. But who cares? This was a luxury priced car, adding the cost of a radio was peanuts. But I did notice it had a clock and factory air conditioning and the transmission. A Pont-a-Mousson 4 speed manual transmission was an extremely rare option.

You were right on both accounts, the radio and the rarity of the transmission. I'll bet in that car 125 mph was a big risk, well it would be for the most part in any car but with drum brakes and the tire technology of the day. Big risk.
@01trsmar

$10 was closer to $100 in todays money.. People were making $4,500 per year total house hold income !!! Four Thousand Five Hundred Dollars....$4,500 total income per YEAR !!! So,$10 was a big deal... The main reason no radio's because they didn't get reception in their town as there wasn't a lot of stations back then ,so static was the radio station you got .. Or if you didn't like music etc...

The tires back in the day were the limiting factor, the suspension design and build quality on Chrysler product of this era were far superior to what we have now. Unibody construction, torsion bars up front, and a Hotchkis drive rear leaf spring set up, that actually works like four wheel steering. In 1973 the cheapening of all cars started, witch lead to the crap we have today. Tire technology is far superior now and suspensions are all the same cheap junk.
