what i love most about this podcast is how you are so respectful towards the victims and their families and you always make it about the victims themselves and make sure their stories are told and not just the murderers story which is something i feel not a lot of true crime podcasts do

Not his first kill for sure either. He was prepared. Brought gloves. I’m curious to know as well what he did for work. If he was so smart to know not to leave finger prints, he probably had intricate background. Saddens me to think families leave this world with unresolved losses. I hope he is found guilty for many more cases and I love that we know more about a victim rather than the monster who committed such a gruesome act.

I was born and raised here in Cedar Rapids and never knew this story! I live close to Westdale/Edgewood Road and remember going to Westdale mall as a little girl; it was so dead and ran down. now, they took down the big mall and turned it into the "Westdale Plaza," full of places to eat like freddy's and chic fil a. It's so wild and sad to hear about this story but you guys did wonderfully respecting the beautiful victim and her lovely family. Amazing job, as usual

Garrett, it's all good to be competitive like that. The way I see it, is that if you're playing a game that ends up having a winner then you play to win regardless. That requires you to be competitive and if you have a teammate that isn't performing well enough to win then frustration is to be expected. And there's nothing wrong with it either lol!

When Andy and Kurt got cleared, I wonder if it was a sigh of relief or a source of anger. Or both. Relief because now they have proof that they *didn’t* do it.. but also, they spent three decades having people believe they were murderers, and now it’s a “see, I told you so, you didn’t believe me” thing. Also, I’d like to believe that if there’s something after death, people who die without answers of what happened get them in that afterlife. I want to believe Michelle’s parents were able to see her and understand as much as they could (as much as *Michelle* could) and get peace that way.

I’ve lived most of my life in Cedar Rapids. I was a 15 year old ninth grader when Michelle Martinko was murdered. Westdale Mall was brand new in December 1979; people were excited about the mall and the many stores and restaurants that were new to the Cedar Rapids area. The murder was haunting and disturbing as Cedar Rapids in the 70s was a small city with a very low crime rate. Michelle’s murder never completely left the community’s consciousness even decades after it occurred. I remember talking to my father about it nearly 20 years ago as a former neighbor had supposedly been a person of interest in the case. What a senseless, unnecessary , horrific act. Michelle’s remarkable resemblance to missing Mason City TV anchor Jodi Huisentruit makes me wonder if Burns was involved in her disappearance. Thankfully his second cousin used the GED DNA service to discover her ethnic makeup, otherwise Burns would probably still be a free man.

I’ve lived in Cedar Rapids my whole life but wasn’t very familiar with this story. I asked my boyfriend and our roommate (older than me) if they knew of it. Our roommate is from Manchester and he told me he used to hang out with the kids of the guy who killed her! CRAZY!!! We joke in CR about what the “5th” season is… usually we say it’s “mud” season or Quaker Oats (one of the big factories in our area which makes the city smell bad some days and like crunch-berries on others.

I use them as reminders of things I can be aware of and can do to keep myself safe. Like checking my car before getting in, double checking doors are locked, immediately locking the door when I get in places, closing blinds at night, not walking alone at night, asking someone to walk with me after work, being aware of exits and who’s behind me, etc. It’s sad to live in a world where we have to do so but theses cases remind me of how harsh the world can really be.

the way you would solve this case back in the day would be to instruct the public to look for men who have fresh scratches on their faces/necks and cuts on their hands/forearms. i call these guys 'parking lot prowlers'. parking lots are the most obvious places to ambush and abduct people. he came up behind her with a knife to her neck and pushed her into the passenger seat. when she realized it wasn't a robbery she refused to give him the keys and grabbed for the weapon/started fighting, which is the right thing to do. your chances of surviving in public are a lot better than if you let him take you to a remote area where he can do whatever he wants to you in private. unfortunately she lost the fight. luckily there were two suspects as this is one of those cases where the ex bf could have easily been falsely imprisoned. parking lots are very dangerous places for women so don't be distracted with music or by your phone. if someone is suspiciously hanging around your vehicle wait until they leave or call 411 and have an officer swing by and ask him some questions. if someone does ambush you do not get into the vehicle - run, scream, fight, hold down on the horn, don't let them abduct you, don't be an easy victim. i laughed at how much the parabon sketch looks like garrett.
