This video looks at one of the biggest single contributors to reported faults and reported error codes in 12V camping and car fridges - the ubiquitous cigarette lighter plug.
You just solved what took me a year to try and figure out, new batteries, 25mm cable, the works. I changed everything except the last 0.5m standard cable plugging into the fridge. that's where the issue was.

Did the Anderson plug mod to my Waeco 40l fridge about 20 years ago and its still going strong. Cut the plug that goes to the fridge off and used 8mm cable between it and the anderson & fuse and zero power issues. With those original plugs they get very hot on the +ve tip, try unplugging one after its been on for a bit and theyre damn hot

Hi Tim, very interesting. I understand the advantage of swapping to the Anderson Plug. However, how does one then connect that to the car's battery? I have a 2022 Toyota Hybrid, it has USB and USB-C and the round 12V socket. Could I get Toyota to install a 240 Volt power outlet connected to an inverter and just run the fridge from the standard "Mains" power cord? Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks Alan

Sorry Alan had not seen your comment. You need an Anderson plug installed by an auto electrician. You've probably sorted that out by now. Cheers

Hi Tim , I run 2 small fridges a 54 litre and a 15 litre console fridge , the console fridge runs permanently and sits in the tray of my work ute (2 yrs old in all weather no cover) and has never missed a beat, the second fridge 54 litre is only on the vehicle when camping so beer in the small one food in the bigger one, recently my dc to dc control panel showed an error ( connection ) both fridges had error codes and wouldn’t run , both are Anderson plug connected but the bigger of the 2 fridges has a high med low switch where the plug connects to the fridge? This fridge is 24/7 connected to mains power at home when we are not camping , should this be set at a high med or low setting for 12 volt? , the fridge is a glacio so it’s a cheap Chinese brand but has never let me down in 4 years. Would be interested for your opinion. Great video very informative.👍 Regards Gary.

The first test I would do is run them on mains power and if they work OK then the problem is vehicle related. The mains power maintains a higher and more consistant voltage to the fridge compressor. Similarly fridges often work when the vehicle engine is running but show up errors or won't start with the engine off - again a voltage drop problem. So try the mains power test, if that proves the fridge runs OK then problem is the battery, wiring or connections in the vehicle. That sounds like a vehicle power issues as both fridges showed a fault.

Hi Tim, I have an Evercool 30ltr 12v fridge. Turns on, compressor starts after the recommended 2min start up process but never gets cold. Digital temp is working as it changes with the ambient temp. No error codes (red error light not on either) Green light on Fan not running either, but figure that comes on with a temp signal thermistor? As required After running for a while the compressor discharge pipe doesn't feel hot. Just whole unit slightly warm from running overnight. Can you suggest a fix to look at? Thanks Gavin
@timterry8714
8 ай бұрын
Hi Gavin, possibly the fan has failed and that has caused the system to get excessively hot and you've lost refrigerant so now it doesn't cool. You won't get an error code in that situation and the compressor will run full time. But look, difficult ultimately to know without looking at it. Oh and the fan should run whenever the compressor runs.

Heya Tim I just picked up a free 12v Fridge/Freezer thats apparently been stored for a long time. Compressor running, fan running but its not freezing up. That a gas issue or could it be power issues?

I have an old Norcold MRFT-60 that seems like an excellent old cooler... been using a couple years with no problems. I accidentally left the van doors open when it rained and it got wet... it was connected to 12volt at the time, but it wasn't actually on. The 10amp fuse was burnt out. Now after everything is dried out it keeps blowing the fuse... flip the on switch and the compressor kicks on for a split second before blowing the fuse again. Any ideas where the problem may lie? I haven't connected yet to 120v AC power to see if that works... worried about doing even worse damage. I'd hate to see this great fridge go to waste because of some little electrical problem.

That looks like its a rebadged Engel fridge and that is possibly a power supply module fault which will be expensive to repair I suspect. They are a complex power supply and you cannot replace them with an aftermarket part as they are quite perculiar to that type of swing motor compressor only used in Engel fridges.

Hi mate I have a 12v dual zone fridge that works fine on 240 but on my 12v it cools 1 side well below it’s pre set and 1 zone doesn’t cool at all. Could this create issues like that?
@timterry8714
Жыл бұрын
No. The problem you are seeing is caused by the gas switch (relay) is not switching between sides. The display/control board tells the gas switch to change sides but either it isn't sending that change to the gas switch or the relay has failed. You need someone to look at it.
@jbarnett88
Жыл бұрын
@@timterry8714 thank you for the reply. I’m just wondering why would the gas switch relay not be faulty when plugged in to 240v? This is only happening when solely running off my 12v deep cycle.
@timterry8714
Жыл бұрын
@jbarnett88 well that's a valid point. Could be voltage sensitive. The voltage is generally a bit lower on 12V and often the gas switch issue is intermittent - sometimes it works OK then it only has to miss once and that happens. Bit difficult to know exactly without seeing it and watching it.

How cold will these things get when its 110 degrees?? Are they even worth it?
@timterry8714
17 күн бұрын
Yes they will get down to the correct temp for a fridge and even at !00F or 43C if the insulation is good the fridge will operate as a freezer also. The problem with most modern fridges is that the manufacturers have reduced the size of the compressor significantly, use "expander foam" rather than proper cool room type insulation in the walls of the case (no thermal insulation properties) and on some of the larger capacity fridges (a good example is the one in the background of this video!) the cooling fan and condenser have been reduced significantly. No cost saving to the customer I might add! The result is that many of the large 75 and 95ltr dual zone fridges run almost continuously above about 95F or 36C. No good for the hotter countries like Australia.

This video is explaining the short comings of cigarette lighter plugs as a method of connecting your fridge to your 12V power source. I am simply stating that this needs to be changed to a better and more reliable type connection. This will require that you install a matching connection on your vehicle to match the fridge. I'm simply stating that the cigarette lighter plug is not a good or reliable connector and should be changed.
