I love seeing what's in Julian's Shorts :) Damn...that fan is loud...and at 6 amps seem rather inefficient...maybe a 12VDC computer case fan or two would be a bit better to run off the battery like this.

Yup, nothing like pulling out PWM controlled fans from servers and top of the line workstations. Quiet and powerful, will last forever. One would think this thing runs for hours every day so you don't really need a jet engine turbine. Not to mention that repurposing is the way to go for ecology and economy. So many people just buy everything from a shop when they need it and then throw it away at 20% of it's life cycle.

Hi Juilan! Thanks for sharing this. I'm trying the same thing - making a tiny house in a box truck and I would like an extractor fan that isn't super loud and can be modulated. I successfully wired it all but the fan buzzes loudly when it's 'dimmed' all the way - any idea why mine does (same fan) and yours doesn't? Might it have something to do with the type or quality of the PWM?

Well, that fan should shift some air!.... ‘tis a bit more than the gentle draft that should be all that is needed (assuming that there are no leaks in the roof). I have two sheds, one completely wooden and one where the back wall is limestone, the two end walls are half limestone, half brick and the front is wooden with a glass window. Don’t get damp or mould in either of them. But both are well ventilated.

That motor is just horrible. It sounds like a low cost brushed motor, and the impeller is out of balance too. That'll definitely upset your neighbours. A couple of large 120mm PC cooling fans would move sufficient air, with a lot less power consumption, and a lot less noise too.
