Biltmore Estate, a fine example of Gilded Age excess. If it were up to me the Biltmore Estate would include a wing detailing the business practices that amassed the fortune. Grotesque tales of no social safety nets, nor simple safety. 80-hour work-weeks, no pensions or holidays. No health insurance. Just a vast meat grinder of working class men. A warning too. America's elite have been working feverishly since FDR and his New Deal to bring back the Gilded Age. They'd like nothing more than to grind as many working-class under their boots as possible.

Lenard Did not know the IWW still existed. Just for the education of others: A careful reading of the economic research on the “robber barons” leads to a diametrically opposite conclusion to that of the critics who invented the title: the so-called robber barons were neither robbers nor barons. They didn’t rob. Instead, they got their money the old-fashioned way: they earned it. Nor were they barons. The word “baron” is a title of nobility, one typically granted by a king or established by force. But Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, and many of the others referred to as robber barons started their businesses from scratch and were granted no special privileges. Moreover, not only did they earn their money and not only were they not granted privileges, but they also helped consumers and, in one famous case, destroyed a monopoly.

As for your ‘80 hour work week’: The economy was predominantly agricultural in the nineteenth century. The productivity of labor so low that a) people had to work 70 to 80 hours a week, and b) in many instances, child labor was necessary to keep food on the table. It was not through some piece of legislation, but through technological development (e.g., steam power in the nineteenth century) and factor productivity growth that people were able to work less hours. By the time the FLSA was passed such legislation was unnecessary because the average work hours during the late 1930s and early 1940s was hovering around the desirable length of the work week. We didn't need a mandate to provide us with a 40-hour work week. Market forces were already doing that for us, and they should continue doing so.

Think of all the homeless that could be housed if this kind of money were spent on basic housing needs. The greed that some people have. Sad.
@jddj2952
4 жыл бұрын
@Markus Patients This is true, however if housing was built around ground where the homeless were re-educated to grow their own food and some craft that they can be responsible at it would turn this situation around from where it is today. Once homeless individuals had to be responsible at working for what they get they would feel better about themselves. This is more than half the problem. Homeless feel useless and they don't want to conform to the wicked ways of government controlled business or the private corporate sector where more damaged is created by them then anything else.
@jddj2952
4 жыл бұрын
@Markus Patients Well at least my thoughts on the matter suggest a possible way to rethink the matters of homelessness. It offers a solution. When people can not offer an intelligent reply or offer a solution or resolve to help people think, and resort to using or writing foolish words, they usually reflect who you are. One person cannot resolve all of mans problems, however, using these comment spaces as a tool to do something positive can help inspire workable solutions. I choose to use this time and space to do this instead of using it your way. You have a nice day.

@Markus Patients You obviously can not read and understand what you read. My comment says that I WAS a homeless person. There are many homeless people helping out others despite their situation. Andrew Carnegie, once the richest man in the world, said that if he died rich he'd consider himself a failure, so he gave most of his wealth to charities and local governments to build better schools, hire teachers and construct & fill libraries. And I think he built a concert hall in New York City & endowed it with enough to maintain a staff & pay artists to perform there so the ticket prices wouldn't be expensive.

Biltmore House (on Biltmore Estate) is 3.65 times larger than the home listed at #10. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biltmore_Estate It's still owned by George Vanderbilt's descendants and is the largest privately-owned home in the United States.

These aren't houses. They are edifices only erected to constantly validate the definition of opulence. The average person gets a lot more joy, pride and fulfillment out of his 3 bedroom family home than they do out of these. Ask any billionaire who builds one of these simply because they can, they will tell you. So who is actually richer for the experience.

with so many abandoned mansions they should relocate a homeless community and let them fix it up and stay there, many would be happy to mow lawns a place for there pets and gardening, burt Reynolds threw his mansion aside in florida, 5oo people could live there, and raise livestock, which president will give to the poor and homeless. moviestar crumbs will work, burt youre not using it anyway...give it up to the homeless.

Stop thinking ,"the poor homeless"....people get homeless because they didn't look out for their future. Homeless people are very lazy people as well. They wouldn't clean and maintain the mansions either.
@uriahpeep9036
5 жыл бұрын
This would never work out.......those who are homeless have no interest in maintaining any residence even if it were their own. The majority of poor people live in squid houses not because they try to maintain them......but because of their mentality.......they simply do not care about the conditions/appearance of where they live. There is a saying.......if a rich person gave his wealth to a group of poor.......within five years, the group would be as poor as before.....and the rich person would again be wealthy. Its mostly a matter of mindset. In my own city, we have entire areas of our county where immigrants (mostly Hispanic) moved in years ago......the area was at that time well kept and neat........a few years after the immigrants moved in, it looked like the worst slum you could ever see in any South American country. These people do not feel comfortable in a clean, well-kept home and community.......it simply does not correspond to their "mindset" of what "home should be.

Sharon M Biltmore was money from Gripman and Tuttle.through Dresser. It actually was not built by George Washington Vanderbilt,ut was his grandfathers he bought back after losing the Tobacco plantation after the civil war. Cornelia Vanderbilt Cecil was Ethel Gripman's cousin. Lucinda Gripman was a Dresser who was the mother of Ethel and the sister of Cornelia's mom.
