There is nothing wrong with taking modern terminology and applying it to past "concepts" even if the terminology wasn't around. this is because the problem or idea is the same in both time periods, but the prior one didn't seem to know there needed to be a new term for the problem. The "endangerment of the global environment" of the 60'ss-70's becomes "global warming" in the 80's.
@gumpyoldbugger6944
4 күн бұрын
Wrong my friend, Global Warming was know back then, although not by the public at large. The term was coined in 1975 however the first warning of human industrial activities were causing a change in the global climate were first sounded in 1896 by by Swedish scientist Svante Arrheniu and confirmed about 40 years later in 1938 by Guy Callendar who provided evidence of rising global temperatures and links them to increased carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. To think it has been almost 100 years since Callendar's evidence and we are still fannying about with our heads up our collective arses. By the time Silent Running was filmed and produce, Global Climate Change was well known amoung the scientific community.

Right, every summer is smashing heat records of the previous record set just last year. Entire forests that have grown since before humans settled the area are catching on fire due to severe drought. Storm patterns have changed, and severe storms are now more common than ever at the southern and eastern coasts. The polar ice caps are provably collapsing and melting into the sea at a rate that will dangerously raise water levels internationally in the next 2-3 generations. Areas in the South of England that were always too cold before the last decade are now growing wine grapes. But climate change is "imaginary." 👌

And your overview of Rollerball ignores the primary subplot that carries through the whole movie -- that the corporations had created Rollerball as a way to indoctrinate the masses in the concept that it was the _group_ that was important, that individuals just contributed to the group and were not important by themselves. Jonathan E was the individual standing out in contradiction to the _pravda_ that the game was intended to present, so he had to be hammered down, and all the rule changes were made with the goal of having him ground up by the game.
