I tried Super Empire Strikes Back last year, as I had managed to beat the first one some time before. Great music and graphics, and the Battle of Hoth level where you take down the Imperial walkers must've been mind blowing for the time (it was my favourite part for sure). However, I gave up when I couldn't get past Dagobah. The level design is brutal, and there are so many choices that seem to have been made specifically to spite you (shrapnel damage, enemies that respawn if you move slightly forward, everything around you causing damage, no recovery time after being hit, that fucking asteroid belt level). I just got destroyed.

I beat Super Ghouls and Ghosts on the SNES classic on normal mode and by spamming save states. It was STILL ridiculously difficult and took several days/every ounce of my effort. I have no idea how anyone could beat it back in the day without save states or Game Genie. Much less on a harder difficulty. The final level with the bracelet in one go is virtually impossible thanks to the time limit.

The first earthworm Jim is much harder than the second. I remember when I played earthworm Jim 2 for the first time in like a decade I was able to make it to the final boss on my first try. on the first earthworm Jim there are much harder parts of the game like when you're in that little glass submarine thing underwater and how you're supposed to walk that pink dog across the whole level later in the game. The first game is way harder than the second game. The final level is insanely difficult. donkey Kong country 3 is my favorite of the dkc trilogy on the SNES, but I think donkey Kong country 2 is the hardest of the.

Lightning Lookout in DKC3 isn't too bad once you figure out it's trick. It tries to predict your moves between the warning shot and the actual bolt. So if your moving topspeed during the warning, stop or turn around, and it will hit ahead of you. It's still tricky, but there's way tougher levels in that game.

DKC3, the lightning is not random. It is calculated based on your movement speed and will always strike directly in front of you with a distance of how far you are calculated to have moved forward by the time the lightning touches the ground. Anyway, I greatly prefer vertical SHMUPs... currently the only one I've ever beaten was Tyrian 2000 (on easy) and it was still hard. It's got at at least 100 levels in it... currently playing PC-Engine SHUMPs and working programming my own for PC. Wait I did 'beat' another... Overkill for MS-DOS on easy, well all six levels, but that game loops forever. It's kind of like a vertical Gradius or R-Type in the sense that you can crash into the environment.

10 - I actually found the second EWJ considerably easier than the first, just because there was no "Down the Tubes" level. Once I had it figured out, I was able to beat it about half the times I played it. By contrast, my record of beating the first EWJ is very, very low. I think I may have beaten it once in my life, but if so, it was only once, and a long time ago; minus all the times I played it with Game Genie, of course. 1 - I've never played Hagane, but from the way you describe it, it sounds a lot like Alien Soldier for the Genesis.

Alien Soldier is much more boss battle based, but it is similar in challenge. The fight with Dracula in Dracula X isn’t all that hard to be honest - the trick is grind for 100 hearts in the level before going into the fight (easy to do as you can go to the same areas over and over again in the level, with reappearing hearts and meat) make sure to go into the fight with the Axe and literally don’t move from the starting point. (unless he appears on top of you) and grind down at his health by throwing the axe, hardly ever try to whip him. When he’s on his last bit of energy make sure to kill his first form when he is in the middle of the room, then just hurl axes at the demon to kill it quickly - if you feel like you are going to take a hit, duck - you don’t get knocked back then and you won’t fall in the pit, just tank. The game is a pain though, nice music (though not much of it) but levels are boring with endless dull screens fighting those purple spear guards who have a crazy hit box they just didn’t have in Rondo of Blood, and the fundamental flaw that your character has no in invincibility frames makes the game a utter chore - you can literally get hit 2-3 times by the same medusa head, where in any other game it would just pass through after the first hit. The challenge is based on stiff mechanics and bad design.

@@11_224-w There's a hidden difficulty that removes checkpoints and partner barrels that you can enter thru the file naming screen. If you get 100% on this mode it counts as 105%

I have pretty bad ADHD and I did not know this as a kid, the Super Star Wars games where my jam, my older brother had a hell of a time with those games and he would tell me to come beat a level for him and his friends. 🤷♂️not good at much but hey super Star Wars is something.

I will never forget the time I beat 'Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back,' for two reasons: 1) It was and still remains the hardest video game I have ever beaten, so it felt like a real accomplishment. 2) The ending amounts to a single still image and text telling you to purchase 'Super Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi,' which is almost (but not quite) as painful a kick in the balls as the spelling errors at the end of 'Ghosts and Goblins.'

That is hilarious. You beat one of the hardest SNES games ever, and you're hit with an advertisement. I doubt if I'll ever actually beat Empire Strikes Back, but at least now I'm prepared and should be able to contain my rage and refrain from drop-kicking the television.

Yeah beat it once. ONCE. What a huge pain in the ass. Its not hard because of crap controls; its hard becsuse its HARD.

I owned this title. I was almost getting bored of the "Imperial March". I beat it sometimes at the easy level. I don't remember doing it on Brave and Jedi difficulties. But also don't remember playing it for 2 or 3 hours and beating. I just used the passwords in my favorite levels in the most times I played it.
