I'm not even a lock security expert and one glance at that, I would've declined that product for shipment to the public. Everyone knows you shouldn't have the hinges on the outside especially if you're a security safe. Not sure how they missed such a major security flaw.

Hinges on the outside are common on safes. What’s missing is a bolt or overlap so that side of the door can’t be lifted out even when the hinge is damaged.

I looked up how the other Kidde pushbutton locks are decoded and applied the same technique in this fashion to decode the lock in minutes. Be advised, the BEST way to do this is with some sort of flat or dimpled "stick" or rod you can use to physically push down on the buttons, as you will be applying enough force to make your thumb quite sore in short order otherwise. I used a retractable ball point with heavy tape over the tip to keep it from damaging the plastic pushbuttons. First reset the lock, then apply just enough clockwise torque to the open knob to get it to stay in a slightly cocked position. The position of the knob is key...it should be positioned only as much as it takes to get the knob to stay put when you release it and no more. Then push down hard, one button at a time, and observe the knob for movement. If it doesn't move, release the knob tension to its normal position, reset the lock, reposition the knob, and try again. If you get no movement on that button a few times, then move on to the next and repeat. Any buttons which produce movement of the open knob are very likely to be part of the combination. When you have done this for all the buttons, release the tension on the open knob, reset the lock, and enter all the numbers which produced movement in the procedure above. The lock should open. IF IT DOESN'T OPEN: Repeat the above procedure again this way: First verify all the buttons which produced movement before still do so. (They should.) This will give you a "feel" for the procedure. Then cycle through all the other buttons to figure out which one (or ones) you missed before.

Dang. Just a quick tap of the welder on each end of that pin and this attack would be a non-issue. So close!

Seeing as these boxes are usually in plain view and / or near personell or security personell, this probably isn't a big deal. Not even gonna lie, I've worked unarmed security for almost 4 years and most places I work (I'm a flex officer, the fill in guy who goes around many, many sites to fill in as needed) don't secure their key boxes, fire / security panels, or much else. The amount of times I've seen a master key or a keyring full of keys just laying around makes me laugh. Point being, I think the problem is less that the manufacturers don't care, and more that the clients of these products simply don't take security seriously. I've had clients who legitimately want to remove our (The security officers) access to building cameras for "privacy concerns". Secure doors left propped open, fire stairewells left propped open (Oh boy the fire marshalls love those, and they ALWAYS ask us, the security guards "Well don't you do patrols and check for this?") Anyway, odds are they won't keep this box locked wherever it is installed, or every employee that isn't supposed to have acesss will end up with it anyway because the combination won't change over the next several decades. I know a sound a bit jaded, but again, I've worked as a security officer for four years sooooo... Yeah... Everything from warehouses to retail to "logistical security" (Yeah that's a thing, I become a receptionist for truck drivers, AKA, kill me, now, please...)

It’s amazing that this vulnerability exists. Even a good whack with a chisel several times on the spine of the hinge would make it much harder or even impossible.
@matthewmontgomery3693

Perhaps an easier solution to the pin removal attack than welding is to simply split the hinge pin in two parts. Assembly is made no more complicated or time consuming. With a two part pin, even if someone can knock and pull one of the pins out in the way demonstrated here, enough of the pin will remain inaccessible within the hinge to prevent removal of the door. You would need a hammer tool with an exceptionally long anvil to move the second half of the pin the rest of the way through the hinge.
@kameljoe21
3 жыл бұрын
You have a point and then you do not. A two part hinge will still leave some gap between the 2 sections. All one needs is a bent pin and a plastic pry bar and then force the pin in to it with the pry bar and extract from the ends.

Things like this have their uses. They’re usually kept in patient rooms to store medications like inhalers and other ones that wouldn’t be sought after so RNs and RTs don’t need to deal with the machine where other drugs are kept. Opioids already in line for an IV are more secure.
