Another BIG thumbs up Peter, great job! There is no substitution for experience, you jumped to the PLL way faster then I would have. Because the LCD displayed the correct frequency with no indication of it being unlocked I would have focused on the signal path just prior to the antenna output and start working backwards into the circuit until I lost the input signal and then I would have monitored the output signal along the signal path until I lost it, hopefully that would have gotten me in the ball park. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work.

Thanks for a great video - was able to track down and fix a similar issue with a recently purchased as "not working" TM451A with your guide - the unit had been subjected to bad power supply and similar no tx/rx and wound up with the same bad trace from TP101 to IC 204, plus additionally bad switching transistor right near there. Thanks!!

Great video as always. I love watching you troubleshoot. Your diagnostic pathway is always cogent and clear. I have noticed, though, that a significant number of faults could easily be found if you perform a check of all power supply voltages as an early (first) step.
@TRXLab

Yes that is right a lot of problems can be found by checking voltages first. Thanks for watching and feed-back. 73

Thanks for the video, Great video! My Kenwood TM-451 suddently stopped transmitting, and the receeving was allso gone. I started with the 8V regulator. This one have i allready replaced in my VHF radio, and it is a commom problem, that the 8V regulator dies. Very strange. But this was OK. I looked in the service manual, and checked the ocillator. It was OK. Then you sayd. See if the PLL is locked. Of course, why havent i checked this. And after this, the rest was easy, and i came to the same conclusion, the 12V was missing at the 10V regulator, very very strange. Now i have a similar wire in my radio, from the testpoint to the three capacitors. Thank you very mutch.

I know what you were saying about being careful not to short anything out with the power supply probes - did that one too many times. What i end up doing nowadays is soldering a wire to the place i want to inject voltage and hook it up to the power supply with an alligator clip. Takes 10 seconds and keeps both hands free when you have to do more testing with the external power supply wired into the circuit.

I probably learned more on this one than any of the others. A lot of good information about troubleshooting PLL lock/unlock which will come in handy I'm sure. Seems like the factory service manual was above average on this one, unless they are all that comprehensive.

Hi Peter can i just ask you one question, a Diamond 4:1 balun, used with WD 330J HF folded dipole, have you any idea if you should get continuity across the SO 239 connector, or is it capacitivily coupled, or is it inductive coupled might be a BU 50 balun...from Fred in England g4vvq.

Maybe you did it off camera (or I missed it) but was it not worth trying to find where the 13.8V supply goes and maybe find a break? Fixing a dodgy solder joint would have been better than the wire no?

So question.... Why did the Rigol able to read up to ~309Mhz when it is a 50Mhz scope? Thanks
@TRXLab
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Billy, Rigol has an excellent front end in this scope. It is still possible to trigger and display this high signals that is awesome. But the voltage reading is wrong as the amplifier is far over the rated bandwidth. But with PA signals it still works and gives us the needed hints...73
