This killer 2001 Intimidator SS is 1 of 83 special edition dealership cars commissioned by NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt, built by GMMG and sold by Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet in Newton, North Carolina.
Logging only 48 miles since it rolled off GM's Sainte Therese, Quebec assembly line and straight into former NASCAR president Mike Helton's garage, this awesome first generation Intimidator SS is an essentially new 11 year old car that has hardly seen the light of day, much less any inclement weather. Its GM code 41 Onyx Black paint presents an extra sinister presence thanks to an expertly applied Silver stinger stripe, which was Dale's nod to former Chevrolet Specialty Vehicles director Jon Moss and his ZL1 Camaro show car; and naturally, its slick, showroom fresh fit and finish is as close to perfect as a factory car can get.
Lift the car's sculpted hood and you'll find a potent LS1 Generation III V8 that, with the aid of a new high flow carbon fiber air box and black mass airflow sensors, delivers in excess of 400 horsepower. What's that you say -- the hood only advertises 381? First off, 381 honored classic muscle car tradition of under rating the car's engine; and secondly, 381 was a largely symbolic number which included Dale's storied number 3, his son Dale Jr.'s family-derived number 8 and his other driver Steve Park's current number 1. Utilizing an aluminum block and heads, an LS6 intake, a revised cam, flat top pistons and coil near plug ignition, this car's efficient overhead valve mill is a conservatively rated Mustang slayer which features big power and a Kansas-flat torque curve. Mechanically, the small block presents a spotless, like-new appearance, and the engine compartment looks exactly as it did when the car left the showroom almost 11 years ago. Twist the key and the cylinders rumble to life sending their rhythmic notes roaring down a great sounding aftermarket exhaust system. Goose the throttle and the engine zings toward redline with surprising efficiency, tons of effortless power and a docile nature that's as smooth as an everyday Z28.
Behind the engine you'll find a slick-shifting Borg Warner T56 6-speed manual transmission which spins a GMMG fitted Posi-traction rear end with stout 3.73 gears. And thanks to a performance tuned double A-arm front and three link rear suspension, which is augmented by factory power steering and Eibach 1.5 inch progressive rate lowing springs, 100% of that stellar drivetrain's power is effectively applied to both the straightaway and the corners. Stops come courtesy of power four wheel disc brakes which feature dimpled rotors and standard anti-lock software. Spent gases flow through aluminized factory pipes to a chambered GMMG cat back exhaust system that's capped with fresh stainless tips. And at the corners of the car, 17 inch American Racing 200S wheels, which are a direct nod to SCCA racers of the late 60s, spin sticky 275/40 Goodyear Eagle F1 radials around Magnetallic Gray spokes and chrome center caps.
Inside this Camaro, fresh bucket leather seats adjust electronically up front and fit like a glove all around; and a leather-clad steering wheel sports convenient thumb controls for the car's awesome Monsoon premium sound system. The instrument panel is a familiar, and highly legible, GM layout which features a built in Driver Information Center next to bright argent gauges which mimic the instrumentation in Dale's race car. And below the dash mounted Intimidator SS specs plaque, a crystal clear Monsoon head unit bumps beats through a high power amplifier and eight high quality speakers. Between the seats a slick Dale Earnhardt short throw shifter, which is topped with a track-ready cue ball shift knob, sits in a straight console which features a sequentially numbered Intimidator SS plaque. Below the seats, rare "Intimidator SS" embroidered floor mats protect pristine black carpet. And naturally, all the luxuries you'd expect in a high dollar modern car are present and accounted for including: cruise control, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, a power hatch, and remote keyless entry with GMs PASSkey theft deterrent system.
What better way to honor the legacy of the 'The Intimidator' than driving around in a bad ass black muscle car with his name on it? Call, click or visit RKMotorsCharlot... for more information on this awesome car!
