I have the U-Haul version of this lock, and its special ability is that it's quite rusty inside the lock body, such that it is quite difficult to insert the key fully, much less turn to unlock. However, the turning tool might give better leverage to turn the core, which may make it easier to pick open, once the pins are set, than by unlocking with the key.

Hose that sucker down with a cheap WD40 clone and treat it to a few minutes of key jive until everything moves freely. The hose it down again to wash out the rust powder. The cheap WD40 clones leave almost no residue, as it's mostly solvent, so the lock doesn't get gunked up by dust mixing with lubricant over time.

I use locks similar to this. The position he placed the lock in to pick this might prove to be very challenging in the field. These locks typically hang with the shackle facing the sky, and to turn the lock upside down and insert a turning tool as seen in this video would be impossible. To pick the lock “upside down” from LPL's position seen here might also prove to be challenging, as the shackle runs through a series of metal plates that would intersect with the positioning of the turning tool in this video. If any picking enthusiasts care to share feedback and poke holes in my novice observations, that would be amazing, I’m always willing to learn new information. It's cool to see a lock that I am familiar with on this channel!!

As the other commenter @antpassalacqua mentions, picking is NOT what most padlocks are designed to withstand. I always liked the saying that they "keep honest people honest". A storage unit rental facility I rent from installs a cheap version of these over the renters built in locks when they miss the rent. One day I couldn't stop myself from wanting to practice on these and easily picked five of them in a row before feeling like I ran out of time and didn't want to get caught. As a responsible picker I locked each one back up out of respect for the facility owner before moving onto the next lock. One time I forgot to pay my rent and got locked out and although I immediately paid the rent I couldn't get through to the owner to remove it so I just kept picking the lock open to access my unit only to lock it back up upon leaving. He ended up being out of town and eventually sent a helper to remove the over lock.

My disc lock knowledge is that most have only two or three thinnish pins on the inside holding the assembly together. A 6mm Allen key ground down to fit the key slot and a sharp knock to get it in and a 6" pipe handle and a sharp hard yank on it breaks the pins off inside and lock is open in maybe five seconds. A lot faster but noisier.

This is a really amazing piece anyways, and I'm so excited to get it and try it out. It should be here today or tomorrow at the latest. It predicted it Saturday afternoon. So I'm actually very impressed. You guys mailed it within a few hours of my order being placed. You guys have such quality products and for very reasonable costs, and I can't wait to see this new expansion in person! I know half of the price of the covert companion might not seem cheap, but it does some really amazing, useful, and straight cool stuff. Now I don't need to carry my pack of other picks and turning tools. I can do it all with the Covert Companion now haha! That's amazing to me. I feel like it's a VERY fair price to charge. I know it was a bit expensive for a small "Swiss Army" type tool, but the engineering and the high quality speaks for itself. Not to mention the wide range and number of great quality picks I think it is more than worth it as a hobby expense. I've been using my Covert Companion since they came out. I believe I ordered it the day you made a video on it. Right when it finally came out. I've enjoyed it frequently, and I think the turning tool expansion is just such a great engineered piece to add to an already greatly engineered piece. Thanks in advance LPL and all!!! In my experience, with my storage unit getting broken into the weekend before Xmas last year, the lock doesn't matter. They'll just use bolt cutters on the cheap latch and bypass your lock entirely.

Nice timing. I was just looking through all of your disc lock videos trying to find one that matched the key to my CubeSmart rental. It has the round plastic bow with the rectangular notch toward the shoulder like a couple of others you've featured but so far the keyway doesn't seem to match any at all. The plastic bow is red and has CubeSmart's logo and name molded into it but no other markings. It's basically a mirror of this key but with another thin groove for a second little warding nib on the opposite side from the one on this key.

Worked for a storage facility. We used to drill these out. Titanium drill bit up to about 3/8 and then flathead to turn the mechanism. It would only take about 2 minutes a lock.

The hole on the right can be used to push open the spring loaded latch and from there you actually can pry the lock the rest of the way open with a screwdriver.

Years ago I rented a storage locker and one day it got pilfered. The padlock was a typical laminated Master Lock. When it comes to storage space rentals, the only real security is if *_every_* locker door is wired into the office security system and if a locker door is opened while its tenant is not logged into the rental facility, an alarm is triggered. 24-hour security video recording is a must, also. Without these features thieves will rent a large-size locker, which allows them to enter the facility at any time of day, whereupon they go from locker to locker picking padlocks or cutting them off and stealing the locker contents, stashing the loot in their locker, then later loading up and driving out without raising suspicion.

Just pointing out that this type of lock is meant to resist bolt cutters, not picking. Anyone who want to rob storage containers, trailers or the like is going to use a nice pair of bolt cutters. It's far faster and easier than picking. Even the lock picking lawyer takes many times longer to pick these things than cutting them open. With a weak lock and a good pair of cutters, I can do it in under 10 seconds. So the pick resistance isn't that important. It never hurts, but isn't it's primary purpose.

The master lock disc, is a real treat. The core of course is garbage...but a lot of these disc locks are terribly made. Two flathead screwdrivers can pry the body apart and you can simply slide everything out. The welds are not always so strong like you‘d want, that’s the first concern and main reason I don’t do disc locks. Solid body for the win!

A former GF was a manager at a self storage chain that’s big in Michigan, they pushed hard to sell these disc locks. They were interested in making $ from the sale, not security

I rented a unit once and they required that I use this lock. I complained, and the manager told me they chose this lock because it was a very high security lock. Instead of arguing, I pulled a set of picks out of my pocket and opened the lock in under 3 seconds. The manager's jaw dropped. Still made me use it, though.

I actually have that same lock on my storage unit. After watching this channel for so long I just felt like any consumer lock will be just as vulnerable. And I'm not about to put a lock on my unit that costs more than the xmas decor I keep in there. The only advantage being the gate to get in (easily hopped) and the security cameras, plus theft insurance at the storage facility. Anyway thanks for showing it's as easy to pick as I imagined.

Storage units would usually be insured. I had stuff in storage many years ago and I got a phone call from the company that there was a break in. The criminals must have been looking for something specific because they opened almost all locks with some sort of bolt cutting device stopping at the one after mine and leaving about 4 units untouched. They were in the place less than half an hour and nothing, not even anything valuable, was taken from my unit. In fact I remember finding a page of a document that wasn't mine. So, strangely enough, I ended up with something extra in my unit after the criminals had left. But anyway I got a new lock from the storage company (that now keeps a toolbox locked) and was told I'd be financially compensated by their insurance for anything missing before I arrived to check my stuff.

The thing is with most storage units, if someone was targeting your unit and you had a beefy lock on it, it would take next to no effort to cut your way through the flimsy doors.
@xaosflux
2 жыл бұрын
And in many configurations, if you are going to cut - you could just cut the hasp the lock is on quicker.
@stenmin1234

@@xaosflux Exactly, a beefier lock would only address the threat model of a random attacker going around checking random stuff. If you're unit is being targeted, they'll get in easily by other vectors. The point of entry to the facility becomes their biggest obstacle then. And that's not hard to overcome..
