Your pulse box was actually for something very interesting. It was used for a high speed strobe that flashes with nS duration. The output pulse is compressed by the cable (coaxial transmission line) and other bits in the flashtube head. The flash tube itself was roughly the same size of a Christmas tree bulb.Typical duration of the flash is 0.1nS to 10nS. Seen the complete unit at the black hole surplus store. 🤓

Neat!!! I donated that to the channel a while ago and totally forgot about it! I'll have to build up mine. There are also lots of neat customizations for the ubitx including a touchscreen, etc. Thanks for the video and looking forward to the next one!

Lol. Talk about getting sidetracked. This starts out as "I need a box for this radio kit" and quickly becomes "Wow. Look at all this cool stuff I got." But it is an awesome pulse generator for something that is basically hand made. And I look forward to seeing the radio get its new home in the box :-)

Good video. I know I would have check for voltages on those caps before I fiddled with it. Can hold charge very long time. I am very interested in the HF rig kit, schematics/layout and such. Can't wait for those video's.

They painted the edge of the sawn off PCB to stop fiber glass getting stuck in fingers. That would be pretty darn unpleasant. Of everything in the pulser the Sprague thin film cap is what I'd want most. All the other stuff is nice too :)

Boss, Just a quick heads up on that radio. Mine was very sensative to ripple from a switch mode power supply. Changed to a linear and it worked rather well. Otherwise much luck there. Mike in Silver Spring.

Not quite 10 or 12 amps on the auto transformer....150/120...more like about 1.25 amps... Good job in scoring a box with some goodies... Nice vest too! Enjoy

This is a pulse-type power supply. Yes, it can be used for flash tubes, or to test Thyratrons, Geiger tubes and other HV circuits. This is a very specialized piece of gear. How sad to see it "reused" just for a cheap case for a uBITx transceiver. If you want to go "cheap", you could just solder together old copper-clad PCB circuit boards, often sold at hamfests for small projects or "dead bug" construction.

Dennis Rasmussen could have either been the technician who built it or the engineer who designed and built it. If it came from a larger company they probably had a tech on hand to actually do the construction. Smaller companies the engineer probably did everything.

Enclosures have become _stupid_ expensive. One can mitigate somewhat with FDM, but that only takes you so far, and doesn't really help with prototypes that require metal enclosures. I've been squirreling away everything that can possibly be repurposed into one with a drill, grinder, or horizontal bandsaw. Doing the math: A Harbor Freight sheet metal bender, with the basic tools every shop already has (drill press, grinders, etc.): 200 USD. Sheet metal from a shop, even paying a premium for a smaller piece: 50 USD. That's 2.5 premium Hammond cases in cost, put the bender at your makerspace if you don't have the other tools, and you're ahead after two or three projects. IEC modules with fuses, with or without filters (I usually go sans filter, so I can know/choose parameters of said mains filter, and be able to service them) are dirt cheap and safe. Which leaves the question: why? How did this happen? Even on the marketplace they're expensive in volume, but the truly large manufacturers couldn't survive at those prices. So what gives? Are they fabricating their enclosures? 🤷

Why don't they just put screws on bent side of back and front walls? That would protect them from caving in if it bashes knobs onto floor or smtg.

Probably not. Electric fence chargers usually have a pulse period of 1 - 3 s., with a voltage in the 1kv or above from a high impedance source.
