Used lapping compound on my Shovelhead valves, installed new guide seals. Put cheap pistons on, still not smoking oil and running good. For 2 years anyhow.

Using sleeve retainer on guide seals is brilliant. I'd not only never heard of it (and I'm an old fart) but the internet doesn't appear to either! Imma have to watch more of these....

And that'll give you another summer of riding.... On a brighter note valve seals are much better than what they used to be back in the day with your neoprene rubber or even so much as leather valve seals you could do that two or three times until you had to go for a total rebuild

the 1990-2003 sportsters are all about the same. just progressive improvement over the years that can mostly be back retro fitted. the new rubber sportsters are all different. tatro

Why not clean carbon off valves using a wire wheel on a bench grinder ?
@obfuscated3090
5 жыл бұрын
I chuck valves in a cordless drill then spin them against a knotted wire wheel. It's fast and easy. My bench grinder spindle is 5/8" so angle grinder accessories fit the right hand side. Left is reverse thread but can take accessories if you use adapters of the same "stepped washer" type used on angle grinders.

@@TatroMachine isn't a file less 'forgiving' - I mean, a file can actually take metal off in the wrong place vs. a wire wheel- or am I mistaken? I JUST did my valves and I wire brushed the head & tops of the pistons as well as the valve seats and valve lips before lapping. Was that bad ?
@dannyboyd5030

@@lynskyrd I am not an authority but wire wheels can create tiny gouges on aluminum heads and create hot spots if used in the combustion chamber and the top of pistons. Also broken wire pieces can clog oil passages and wreak all kinds of havoc in an engine.

@@TatroMachine don't you love all these 'experts'. Most of them barely change their own oil. I JUST lapped my valves, got rid of the startup smoke and acceleration smoke, hence oil loss. Also increased compression on a stock bore Evo from 110psi to 155psi- bike isn't losing oil, better gas milage and the tree huggers are happy - mission accomplished. It is better than a complete machine shop valve job- no, of course not but new valves, springs, 3 angle valve seat grind - $800 minimum.
